Another exciting sighting on the farm today! A young male pittopotamus in his natural habitat. This location seems to have become a thoroughfare for this rare species as they search for permanent territory. This young adult male appears to be of the subspecies pittopotamus formal-wearus. His markings are reminiscent of a tuxedo - making him ready at a moments notice for any black tie event he may encounter. Notice how he slaps forcefully at the water while he barks at it. A clear display of dominance to let the water know who is boss. This is also sure to impress any females who may be in the vicinity.
*Sherman was rescued over a year ago by Dogs Deserve Better Blue Ridge after he was on the euthanasia list at a local shelter. He has now become a permanent sanctuary resident here at the farm. Many rescues get a bad wrap for "warehousing" dogs in boarding facilities. While certainly not every place is created equal . . I try to provide an enriching experience for the dogs here (whether they are here for a short time or a long time). Quality of life for every dog in a specific scenario must be considered. This pond (created from a naturally occurring underground spring) was one of several improvements and updates made to the property this spring - thanks to my cousin and his crew at Kirtley Construction, LLC. - and as you can see . . It's Sherman approved!

Today I share with you an extremely rare find! My game camera has caught a glimpse of the extremely elusive pygmy pittapotamus! The pygmy pittapotamus is often mistaken for it's larger cousin . . The common hippopotamus. While the common hippo is native to the fresh water lakes, rivers and estuaries of Africa (and has also established itself as an introduced species in Colombia) the smaller pittopotamus prefers couches and climate controlled dwellings often inhabited by humans. This highly adaptive creature is an expert at cohabitation and can be found in a variety of environments and climates world wide. It is also often mistaken for a variety of seals, particularly in coastal areas that are often inhabited by actual seals. This "pittapot" appears to be a senior female traveling alone. Where did she come from? Where did she go? We can only speculate.
What we do know is that she appears to be searching for a new territory and is likely actively seeking a vacant couch to claim!
If you have such a couch . . June would love to hear from you! This sweet lady has a lot of love to give and lots of pep left in her step! She's about 11 years young and would love to find her person! June is a pretty easy gal to live with and is low maintenance. She is equally happy going for walks or exploring a fenced yard. She is crate and house trained and can be left loose in the house unattended with out getting into mischief. June is fairly indifferent to most dogs but does not want to interact up close and can get snippy with dogs who invade her space. She does LOVE in tact male dogs . . But otherwise she prefers to live solo but can do crate and rotate very successfully. A no kitties home is also best unless you can do crate and rotate.

Been dealing with an infestation here at the house. Not sure how they got in but I think I caught them all! #bottlebabies
