Happy First Day of Kindergarten to our Angel Baby. We hope you have the best day…

Watching your kids grow up is the best and worst thing.

To Eat Grass or Not to Eat Grass… THAT is the question…

Whichever stance you make on this topic is completely up to you. Just remember, in all fairness to your horse, you have to be consistent about it. You can’t let them eat grass when you are by yourself, but then get after them for the same thing when you are riding with your friends.

How to Avoid Your Horse Blowing Up

When your horse spooks, don’t think of it as “spook”, better yet, think of it as having an abundance of energy.

Your job as a horseman/woman is to help your horse release that energy in a controlled manner. If you don’t help your horse with this excess energy, there is a good chance that that energy will build up to the point of the horse exploding (rearing, bucking, bolting, etc.)

Groundwork Does NOT have to be a huge time commitment

Many people assume to get a horse good at groundwork, you have to put in hours and hours of groundwork on a daily basis. That’s not true!

You just need a little bit on a regular basis. Set aside 15 minutes every time you go to work with your horse and watch your horse’s groundwork not only get better but your relationships with your horse on the ground will improve as well.

Simple Trailering Problem…. Simple Fix

Sometimes horses fall into a routine and when it is changed, your horse can become frightened.

Watch as I teach Bingo how not to spook while getting into his new trailer.

Redirecting your Horse

Whenever I take my horse out of the arena, I always assume there is going to be something that scares or distracts them.

Instead of allowing your horse to become distracted or scared, redirect them by doing something constructive.

Watch as Peanut and I go through the “Valley of Death” with Peanut.

Horse Charges When Backing?!

This video of Ella and I working on backing is a pretty common reaction when I teach horses how to back. Some do it worse and some don’t have such a strong reaction. The trick to fixing this and/or avoiding this problem is whenever they take a step forward, immediately increase the pressure. The worse thing you can do is let them come forward and release the pressure.

06/07/2024

Riding on the trail is what horseback riding is all about right?! Well as much as we try, we cannot prepare for EVERYTHING that we may encounter on the trail. It’s all about preparation and having a plan when you go on the trail.

Watch and listen as I take Spoon over a “spooky” bridge for the first time.

What to do In Between Ground-working Exercises

After every ground working exercise, it is important to desensitize your horse. Having them understand that your equipment isn’t just there to put pressure on them, but it is also there to love on them.

Watch as I desensitize Ella and teach her how to relax with my stick and string.

Getting Your Horse Back to Work

Whenever you get a horse back to work, it’s best to just make a plan. Don’t rush it, and always be on the side of caution. You only get in trouble if you don’t do enough prep work.

Watch as I bring Mushroom back into my program after several months off.

First Ride in the Arena… Let’s Add a Little Water

This is the first time I am riding Ella in the arena. Unfortunately, the night before it down-poured causing my arena to flood. Watch as I work through this and do my best not to slip, fall, and/or drown.

05/22/2024

Lunging a Hot Horse

Not all horses are lazy on a lunge line; Ella is clearly the opposite. One of my goals in this lunging process to get her to mentally relax. I do this by changing directions many times, using the least amount of pressure as I can and finishing her at the trot.

Watch as I work with Ella and help her mentally calm down.

05/20/2024

Handy Little Exercise

The driving exercise is a really handy exercise to teach your horse. Once you teach your horse this exercise, you can use this to go over obstacles, go into trailers, or go through gates.

Watch as I teach Ella for the first time how to do this exercise.

Ps- Sorry about my voice, just getting over a cold.

Tired of Getting Run Over, Stepped On, or Having Your Personal Space Invaded???

Backing is the answer to all of these problems! I don’t just back for 5 minutes, I back everywhere I go. There is not such thing as too much backing.

Watch as I demonstrate this on Ella.

It’s the greatest time of the year! Clinic time!

Have you signed up for a clinic this year? What’s holding you back?

Try one of our Obstacle Course Clinics! This is NOT your typical obstacle course clinic where you walk through obstacles. We start out in the arena, work on groundwork and riding exercises that would help you get through real life obstacles. We then apply those lessons to amazing obstacles that set you up for success in the trail.

I only have a few spots left in our next clinic. If you would like to sign up, comment “Obstacle” or send me a message!

ORS with a Filly

This might seem pointless to some people but I promise you, it does work. You have to be consistent and you have to be willing to repeat the process over and over again.

Watch and listen as I teach Ella how to do a ORS for the first time.

05/02/2024

Saddling a Filly

After the first saddling, I expect all of my horses to stand quiet. Meaning that they don’t act like they have ants in their pants or they seem super nervous about the saddling process.

Watch as I saddle Ella for her third saddling and you can see for yourself how comfortable she already is with the saddle. If a filly can be saddled quietly, so can an older horse.

04/29/2024

Taking a Saddle Off for the First time

Never do I take a horse’s saddle off when they are worried and nervous. As you can see in this video, the last thing I do before the saddle comes off is desensitize Ella to the saddle. Once she is calm and relaxed, the saddle can come off.

Bad Lunging?!?!?

Are you tired of your horse dragging you from one part of the arena to another? Or not looking to the center? A simple fix to this is when you are done lunging your horse to rest them in the center with you for 3-5 minutes.

When I first started teaching Sage how to lunge, he refused to look at me and would always pull on me.

Check out the progress we made. Good Boy Sage!

Starting Your Round Pen Session

Don’t be in a hurry to get your horse working on the outside of the round pen. I like to see if they are willing to spend some time with me. If they are, that tells me that they understand that being with me means rest. If they are not, it tells me that they don’t understand this concept yet.

In order to fix this, all you have to do is rest your horse with you in the center of the round pen for 3-5 minutes after your round penning session.

With consistency, this will correct itself.

04/10/2024

Head Shy Horses

It has been my experience that every horse is head shy to some extent at some point in their life. This is something that is easily fixed with consistency and being intentional.

Watch as I show some of the head shy exercises that I do with my horses as they progress in their training.

04/08/2024

Softening at the Standstill

This is an exercise that I don’t drill for long periods of time all at once. Instead, I work on it for a few minutes several times throughout my entire training session with the horse I am working with.

Watch as I demonstrate this on Sage. Remember, teaching a horse to be light, generally takes repetition and doesn’t happen overnight.

What are our Obstacle Clinics like? Well first, they are a ton of fun with like minded horsemen/women that encourage and lift each other up.

We begin the clinic with arena work, a little groundwork and riding to make sure our horses are safe and ready to go onto the obstacles. We then transition the lessons we learn in the arena and apply them to the obstacles on the ground. There is a ton of one-on-one instruction to help you navigate each obstacle.
We then take all of the lessons we’ve learned throughout the day and try out all the obstacles under saddle (if you want).
Lunch is provided at the clinic and we do allow spectators!

Let’s kick off this clinic season with a super fun Obstacle Course Clinic at a beautiful private facility in Larkspur, CO! Our first one is May 4th with limited spots. We hope to see you there!

Sage’s First Time in the Pasture

As a general rule, these first rides in the pasture, are the most dangerous. I make sure I have been training the horse well enough that I have a little bit of a steering and I have a solid break.

As you see while I am riding Sage, he goes pretty fast and he doesn’t go in a straight line. These are things that with time and consistency, get better by themselves.

Watch as Sage and I take our training out on my pastures.

Safety Check

There will be times where I haven’t ridden one of my horses for several months. Before I get to riding them, I always do a few days of groundwork. Not because I have to but because my safety matters.

I have a variety of exercises that I do to make sure the horse is ready to be ridden again. Check out this video and see two of those exercises I do to make sure the horse is ready to be safely ridden.
