I am a lesson horse.
I am a horse that isn’t as recognized as the top hunter jumpers, the best western pleasure horse, or the 1D barrel horse, I am a lesson horse. I am the backbone of the foundation to do all of those things. I am a lesson horse.

I am not loved by one person. I am loved by several people. I don’t have my person, I have my people. I am a lesson horse.

I will teach your child and yourself more than just to ride. I will bring your child out of their shell. I will teach your child about life. I will be yours and their shoulder to cry on. I am a lesson horse.

I will bring my family the joy of teaching kids. I will bring my families business growth. I am so loved by my family, even if they don’t express it everyday. My family allows others to show me love and enjoy me. I am a lesson horse.

At the end of your childs’ journey on a lesson horse, they will out grow me. They will find one that jumps higher, a horse that is show quality, a horse much faster than me. But, I will never outgrow being a lesson horse. I will be the one that loved your child and helped your child grow into the rider and person they are. I am a lesson horse.

At the end of my time as a lesson horse; I will be covered in grey hair. Each grey hair came from each hour I spent as a lesson horse. I will be in a field of green grass, I will be taken care of as I was when I was a lesson horse. I will watch your child from across the pasture love her new horse. But, I will love your child more than any horse can. I will be the backbone of the business, the family, and your child. Don’t forget about me, I am a lesson horse.

I was fortunate to attend the recent retreat at Warwick and Robin's Journey on Ranch. Beyond amazing experience- still absorbing everything I learned ❤️. There was something I saw that Warwick explained, I was able to deploy yesterday with AMAZING RESULTS.

I have a late gelding that I have restarted from the beginning- using Warwick's flow chart etc. He was doing great, until something set him back. He used to bite out a lot when being cinched- pretty sure he was handled roughly (just one of the many symptoms he showed of stress) - he was purchased in Mexico and there are "some" gentle horseman in Mexico - they are still pretty rare.

Yesterday, he showed anxiety when I went to put his pad on.. so I slowed WAY down and did some advance and retreat until he showed acceptance- slowly saddled, making sure he had lots of scratches along the way.

When I went to move the mounting block to him, he backed up (old behavior that we had moved passed months ago). So, again I slowed down and allowed him to express his concern- he has learned to lower his head and nash his teeth - jaw back and forth instead of biting.

What I learned at Warwick's- was that sometimes.. they need to use their teeth to express themselves. I had an experience with Sherlock (pretty sure it was him) that was gentle at first when he came to engage with me. Then he used his teeth and (I walked away). Warwick came up and showed how its PERFECTLY fine to allow them to use their teeth against your hand - you keep your hand flat and follow them with your hand. It was after he allowed this "expression/release" that Sherlock felt "heard" and safe and layed down and took a nap in the center of our group .. beyond amazing!!

So, as my horse nashed his jaw - I gave him my flat hand and he went at it!! It was hard, but I held it there and with gentleness in my heart and intentions I put my head near his and told him "it's ok, I got you.." it was about 20 to 30 minutes of working with him at the mounting block - if he backed up, I'd let him, then I'd come to his head and let him work it out through my hand.. It's hard to explain how connected I felt to him - but I could remain regulated (thank you Robin!!!) and able to help him move through his anxiety - with no "end game" just holding the intention that "I've got you". It was almost like siting down and rocking with an autistic child that was overwhelmed..

He relaxed and eventually sided up to the mounting block - calmly waiting for me to mount. We sat together for 15 minutes - just me rubbing him and giving him scratches where he wanted..

We then walked a bit, he was soooo willing to be "there" with me. A few lateral moves (we've been working on) - which he executed beautifully- then I dismounted and immediately slowly loosened the cinch.

He followed right next to my shoulder, as we left the arena - no need to hold his reins.

It's hard for me to put into words how, when we learn to communicate (listen, hear and communicate that we "see" them) - in a way THEY understand.. how connected we can feel..

Thank you Warwick and Robin- you change this horse/human world for the better every single day ❤️❤️❤️❤️.
