Dr. Stephanie Caston is leading the charge in surgical techniques. An absolute master who frequently has her works published. This piece is a must read for anyone interested in just how far she will go to provide top quality care to your horse, right down to the type of suture and knots used. Truly an incredible attention to detail!

Objective The aim of the study was to evaluate the strength and size of the double forwarder (DF) knot in 2 and 3 USP polyglactin 910 when used to form a ligature and to compare the knot holding cap...

๐Ÿšจ Important Update: Mosquito-Borne Diseases in Horses ๐Ÿšจ

As of August 2024, some states are seeing cases of mosquito-borne diseases in horses, including Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) and Western Equine Encephalitis (WEE).

๐ŸฆŸ Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE):

In 2023, Vermont detected EEE in mosquito pools, with a tragic case of an unvaccinated horse in Swanton succumbing to the virus.

In August 2024, New York State confirmed EEE in horses across several counties, including Saint Lawrence, Madison, Oneida, Orange, Ulster, Cayuga, Wayne, and Washington.

EEE is transmitted through mosquito bites. Importantly, infected horses cannot spread the virus to humans or other horses.

๐ŸฆŸ Western Equine Encephalitis (WEE):

WEE is carried by the Culex tarsalis mosquito, which is found in the western U.S.

While equine cases have dramatically decreased, with none reported since 2004, the virus remains present in birds, mosquitoes, and even jackrabbits.

โš ๏ธ Protect Your Horse:

* Ensure your horse is vaccinated against these viruses.

* If you suspect your horse may have EEE or WEE, contact your veterinarian immediately. Both are reportable diseases.

๐Ÿ’ง Prevent Mosquito Breeding:

1. Drain or discard items that collect water (e.g., rain gutters, drains, unused flowerpots, wading pools, buckets, and tires).

2. Change birdbath water frequently.

3. Install or repair screens on windows and doors.

4. Dump and clean water troughs at least weekly.

5. Use mosquito dunks in horse water.

Stay vigilant and keep your horses safe! ๐Ÿดโœจ
