𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗿𝗼𝘁?

Rain rot, also called rain scald or dermatophilosis, is a skin infection caused by a bacterium known as Dermatophilus congolensis. Under wet conditions this bacteria can cause an inflammatory infection resulting in lesions along your horse's skin. These lesions cause small patches of raised bumps which are scabs containing clusters of your horse's hair. Removal of these scabs results in bald patches along the affected area and can lead to a serious infection that involves multiple layers of skin.

Though rain rot can happen any time of the year horses are especially vulnerable during wet/humid seasons. As a preventative practice good hygiene by establishing regular bathing and grooming routines, while also providing your horses shelter from heavy rainfall.

JUICY has an important lesson for us about skin disease!
Stages: at first, it looks kind of benign… Just bumps. But all that skin is actually dead! Which means that once you start treating and resolving the infection that skin and hair will fall off! In cases of bad skin disease there is almost always a period of baldness as the dead skin and hair fall out and the new hair has not yet grown in.
The last set of pictures shows juicy’s beautiful, new healthy skin and hair. But check this out: it grew in a different color! It often does, especially during a change in season. It looks a little startling, but it’s actually successful treatment with healthy new hair.

I am so excited to welcome Medica Veterinary Products to the team!

I’m low-key obsessed with making sure my horses look shiny and spectacular… usually as I’m in the barn looking like the hot mess express. I’ve found that my current hypersensitive mares, and older geldings are offering a plethora of skin challenges… hives, dryness, irritation, you name it. Oh and I need something that I can continue using through the USEF and FEI crazy regulations.
