Creston and Wilbur Elementary School students said goodbye to over 140 Rainbow Trout this week. They released the inch-and-half-sized fish into Lake Roosevelt as the completion of a K-2 science project.
โSeveral kids named their fish before they released them,โ said Creston Principal Glenn Arland. โThen they watched them swim under the dock. It made it real to them. They knew they were moving on.โ
The schools partnered with the Department of Fish and Wildlife for the five-month project, which allowed students to observe and study the life cycle of trout from egg to small fish. Throughout the project, Glenn estimates that both schools achieved over 70% success rate.
The project began in December when Glenn purchased equipment from Two Fish Aquatics. In January, he secured 200 fish eggs from Spokane Fish Hatchery: 100 for Wilbur and 100 for Creston.
On April 18th, pre-kindergarten to second-graders traveled to Two Rivers RV & Marina Resort in Davenport.
Two Fish Aquatics Owner, Dave Malet, helped by netting small clusterings of fish into six-ounce cups at the fish release table for the kids to take to the dock.
Wearing life jackets, students carefully knelt on the edge of the dock and released the fish a few at a time.
Thank you, Wilbur Creston School Districts, KHQ Local News, and John Webb.

I wanted to make it easy for them to get everything they needed, a one-stop shop. I ordered the setup from 3 suppliers. It worked out perfectly," said Dave Malet, owner of Two Fish Aquatics ๐ Wearing life jackets, students carefully knelt on the edge of the dock and released the fish a few at a time ๐
Several weeks ago, Wilbur Elementary and Creston Elementary purchased aquariums, stands, pumps, chillers, and tubing from Two Fish Aquatics. Since then, the excited students have hatched and raised 200 fish eggs from the Spokane Fish Hatchery to study the life cycle of rainbow trout. Soon, the fish will be released into local waterways. Here's the latest from Wilbur Creston School Districts Superintendent Jay Tyus.
"Two Fish Aquatics has a great atmosphere and wonderful selection. Also, prices are spot on. It's cheaper than going to a chain pet store. They have everything you need, from fish to food to aquarium maintenance. The owner is very knowledgeable and friendly!" โ Mary Cole โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ
