Your Akron Zoo will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 21 and Wednesday, Jan. 22 due to the extreme cold temperatures. We will reopen on Thursday, Jan. 23.

With the cold temperatures, our keepers provide additional precautions that keep our animals safe, such as straw beds, heat lamps and heated rocks. All of the animals have temperatures parameters to help decide when they need to remain indoors. With the current temperatures, the majority of animals will be inside.

However, some animals will be given the choice and they prefer to remain outside, such as the grizzly bears, red wolves, bald eagles, red panda and coyotes. The cold doesn't bother them!

Today, we celebrate and reflect on the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

You can visit the temporary exhibit, "Celebrating Black History in Perkins Woods," now through March 7.

Perkins Woods, a city park now largely comprised of the Akron Zoo, was a place where Black residents in Akron made local history through the changes and challenges of the 20th century.

In this exhibit, you'll discover how Black residents in Akron expanded the John Brown Monument, fought a plan to move the zoo from Perkins Woods and operated a long-lived Custard Stand at the park's edge as ways to affirm community and make a lasting impact on the city. Admission to the exhibit is included with general zoo admission.

Tree corridors are used by many different animals, such as tamarins, jaguars, capybaras, birds and more, to move from area to area.

The Akron Zoo is proud to participate in Cans for Corridors. With Cans for Corridors, aluminum cans are collected at the Akron Zoo and recycled. Proceeds from recycling are used to purchase native trees to replant and connect patches of the rainforest in Brazil.

We're happy to report that in 2024 the Akron Zoo raised $1,316, planting 987 trees. Since 2015, the Akron Zoo has raised $13,663, planting 17,449 trees! All zoo guests and visitors are invited to participate in Cans for Corridors at the Akron Zoo. Drop off your aluminum cans in the recycling chute in the center of parking lot C anytime throughout the year, and zoo staff will do the rest!

Special shout out to our very own Akron Zoo Chapter of AAZK for all the work they do in this important cause.

Today, on , the zoo and conservation community is honoring the legacy of Mike Lubbock, co-founder of Sylvan Heights Bird Park, and a longtime partner of the Akron Zoo.

From the words of our president & CEO, Doug Piekarz: “The Akron Zoo has partnered with Mike Lubbock and Sylvan Heights for nearly 30 years. Together, we have worked on waterfowl conservation efforts internationally and partnered with Hiram College at their biological field station to create an endangered waterfowl breeding center focused on the conservation of white winged wood ducks.

For me personally, Mike had a tremendous personal impact on my young life when I first met him nearly 40 years ago. My love of waterfowl and strong desire to save some of the most endangered species from extinction led to my internship at Sylvan Heights Bird Park, and then a long time collaboration which included conservation work in Venezuela, Brazil and the south of Spain together.

I treasure not just my memories of Mike, but also the collective impact our organizations have had as we moved the importance of the conservation of waterbirds forward. Mike’s impact on this field of conservation has left an indelible and unforgettable mark.“

In June, we celebrated the hatching of several Baer's pochards at your Akron Zoo! Baer's pochards are critically endangered, with their population in decline due to habitat loss, pollution and human conflict. With only 150-700 individuals estimated to be remaining in their native Asia, every birth is a cause for celebration!

The Baer's pochard is one of the many residents that call the waterfowl pond home!

Once widely distributed across northeast India and Southeast Asia, the white-winged wood duck population has seen an extreme decline in the wild due to habitat loss.

The Akron Zoo is proud to partner with Hiram College and Sylvan Heights Bird Park to house and breed this species of ducks in a controlled environment. Through this partnership, an Endangered Waterfowl Breeding Center has been built at the James A. Barrow Field Station at Hiram College. With the help of Hiram College students, husbandry research has also been conducted to help decrease infections of Mycobacterium in this species of waterfowl. Here's to many more years of this special partnership!
