Hurricane Helene update:
There was very mild damage done to the farm. Doug had to climb on the roof to fix something minor and sweep the debris off of it. A big branch is sitting on top of the coop but did not damage it. The yard was littered with branches, leaves and twigs. Compared to many others, we are *extremely* lucky.
We were out of power for three days. While it didn’t bother us too much (the heat and humidity was a little intense), the hardest part was being out of water for the animals. Every day, we filled up three huge jugs and trekked them out into the pasture, where the cows and sheep would already be waiting around their water bucket. They drank most of it right away. The ducks were getting restless when their kiddie pools weren’t refreshed. (Ducks drink SO much water. In fact, they can’t correctly digest their food without it.) The pigs were the only ones that are a little easier without much water. But even then, they need it to stay cool.
After this hurricane, we have learned that we need a generator for these situations. Not so much for us, but for the animals. We will be looking into getting one by next hurricane season so we don’t worry about the animals if the power is out for multiple days.
We’ve seen the photos of devastation. We consider ourselves so blessed and we are so very grateful. Our hearts hurt for those who lost their homes, family members, their livelihoods, everything. They stay with us in our thoughts. 💔🙏🏽💔
