Client Question: I've seen the puppies twitching in their sleep in videos. I know they are very young, but are they already dreaming?
Answer:
I'm no Canine Neurologist, but this is what I learned in my whelping courses: Twitching in sleep, also known as Activated Sleep, is a reflex that helps puppies build enough muscle to stand and walk. It occurs when the puppy's brain sends out small electrical impulses that cause them to twitch and jerk. So, in otherwords, if they did not do this they would suffer from a type of atrophy. This is an involuntary reflex and they spend so much of their time sleeping, it has to happen. As puppies grow and become more active during longer periods of awake time, they begin to have REM sleep more than Activated Sleep. Puppies actually learn while they sleep. They go into REM sleep 15 - 20 minutes after falling asleep. Puppies have 2 or 3 cycles of REM sleep compared to an adult dog that has 1. Puppies experience more dreams than adult dogs. Puppies acquire huge amounts of new information daily and have a lot to process at night. Puppies and dogs do have nightmares. Since dog's and Puppies dreams are based on past experiences, it's assumed the nightmares are as well. Things like chronic pain, stress and anxiety can contribute to regular nightmares. So creating a comfortable stress free sleeping area, like a partially covered crate for your dog can help. As tempting as it is, it's never a good idea to wake your puppy or dog during a nightmare. They may react unexpectedly being confused and aggressive and possibly bite. It's better to provide an enriched, yet calm living environment and protect them from experiencing traumatic events during their waking hours.
