🐾Zookeeper Appreciation Week! 🐾

We are shining a spotlight on the zookeepers who dedicate their lives to caring for our animal family. Their passion, commitment, and hard work ensure that each one of our animals receives the best possible care.
Zookeepers are always there, feeding, nurturing, and enriching the lives of our animal residents. They play a crucial role in helping to protect endangered species and educate the public about the importance of wildlife preservation.

🦚Why Peafowl Roam Free at the Zoo! 🦚

Ever wondered why peafowl wander freely at the zoo? Here’s why:

Natural Behavior: Free roaming lets them act naturally, boosting their well-being.

Pest Control: They help control insects, benefiting the whole zoo.

Beautification: Their vibrant feathers add extra beauty.

Education: Visitors can observe and learn about them up close.

Ecosystem Balance: They contribute to the zoo’s ecological diversity.

Next time you visit, enjoy watching these majestic birds in their element! 🦚💚

🐺 We are thrilled to announce that the Mexican Grey Wolf enclosure remodel is complete!🌲

Today we welcomed Lady and Cleo to their upgraded habitat. This remodel not only enhances their living space but also ensures they receive the best care possible.

A huge thanks to White Sands Construction, INC and all the subcontractors for their exceptional work.

We also extend our gratitude to the City of Alamogordo - Government for prioritizing the animals safety and happiness by focusing on the zoo in their planning.

Special thanks to the New Mexico Legislature for allocating funds for this project through our city's ICIP (Infrastructure and Capital Improvement Plan). Your support has been invaluable in making this project a reality.

Come visit us and see the wolves thriving in their new home!

🦌We are delighted to welcome a fallow deer fawn to our zoo! ❤️

This adorable little one was born to a mother who was rescued by NM Game and Fish after being kept illegally as a pet. Wild animals belong in the wild, not in homes. They have unique needs and behaviors that can’t be met in a domestic setting. Keeping them as pets can harm their health and disrupt ecosystems.

Visit us to meet our new fawn and learn more about why wild animals should stay wild!

🦘Meet Mouse, the spunky 9-month-old orphaned Red Kangaroo Joey receiving care from the zoo staff. She's been a familiar face around the zoo and has even visited schools across Otero County.

🌻This week marked her introduction to the red kangaroos residing at the zoo, and it couldn't have gone smoother. She is bravely honing her hopping skills and embracing her kangaroo instinct. Mouse eagerly anticipates her daily visits with her newfound mob mates.

🌿🐦 Fledgling Birds 🐦🌿

🌻As spring blooms, so does the emergence of fledgling birds taking their inaugural flights! Fledglings are at a crucial stage of development as they master the art of flight. Despite appearing vulnerable, they are actually closely monitored by their nearby parents. It is natural for them to spend time on the ground, honing their strength and coordination for flight. So if you happen upon a fledgling bird exploring your garden, rest assured it's likely not in distress!

🦤Have you ever wondered why our zoo doesn't rehabilitate orphaned or injured wildlife? While it might seem like a logical solution for our zoo to care for these animals, our facilities adhere to strict protocols and regulations to safeguard the well-being of the resident animals. Introducing wild animals, particularly those with unique requirements like orphaned or injured wildlife, can upset this delicate balance.

🦝Wildlife rehabilitators possess the expertise, resources, and permits essential for providing proper care and, whenever feasible, reintroducing these animals into their natural habitats. It's about prioritizing the welfare of individual animals and the conservation of their species as a whole.

🚧 Zoo Construction Progress! 🚧

We are thrilled to announce that construction is underway at the zoo, thanks to funding from the Infrastructure and Capital Improvement Fund (ICIF) provided by the state of New Mexico. We are incredibly grateful for the support of our city government, which has prioritized our zoo and helped secure funding for vital projects like this.

Our current focus is on building a new perimeter fence, starting with the habitat for our Mexican Grey wolves. The project is progressing rapidly, and we are aiming for completion of this first phase by the summer.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to enhance and improve your zoo experience!

🌟 Farewell, Gabe the Camel 🌟
It's with heavy hearts that we share the news of Gabe's passing at our zoo.

🐪 Gabe has been a beloved member of our zoo family, captivating visitors with his gentle nature and majestic presence. From his towering hump to his one-of-a-kind smile, Gabe has left a mark on all who had the pleasure of meeting him. Whether he was munching on grass or playing with his favorite ball, Gabe's charm and grace were undeniable.
We extend our deepest condolences to our dedicated zookeepers who cared for Gabe day in and day out, ensuring he lived a happy and fulfilling life. His memory will forever live on in our hearts and minds.
Rest in peace, dear Gabe. Your spirit will continue to roam the savannahs of our memories, bringing joy and wonder to all who remember you.

We understand that many of you have furry, feathered, or scaly friends at home whom you adore. However, we kindly request that you refrain from bringing them along on your zoo adventures. Here's why:

🚨Safety Concerns🚨: Our primary concern is the safety of both our visitors and our animals. The presence of unfamiliar pets can cause stress and anxiety among the animals in our care. This stress can disrupt their natural behaviors and even pose potential risks to their health and well-being.

🤒Potential Disease Transmission:🤒 Animals brought from outside environments may carry diseases or parasites that could be harmful to the animals in the zoo. Even seemingly healthy pets can be carriers of illnesses that may not affect them but could be devastating to our zoo residents.

🌱Disruption of Conservation Efforts:🌱 Zoos play a crucial role in conservation efforts, working tirelessly to protect endangered species and preserve biodiversity. Introducing pets into this environment can disrupt these efforts and potentially harm the delicate balance of ecosystems we strive to maintain.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. We look forward to welcoming you and your family (minus the pets!) for a fantastic day at the zoo!

Witness the dedicated veterinary medical team in action as they assist Winnie with her dental issues. Winnie underwent three root canals with remarkable resilience. She emerged from the procedure with her spirits high and her mouth feeling vastly improved.

But that's not all! Winnie and her companion, Tiny, are in for an even greater surprise. They have secured funding to expand their habitat. Keep an eye out for further updates.

Join Winnie and Tiny in celebrating Earth Day on Saturday April 20th, from 9am to 2pm. Admission is free. Come and discover how you can contribute to the protection of black bears in New Mexico.
