“You’re just one of those breeders who’s in it for the money!!”

Man, if I had a dollar for every time that’s been said to me before any other information was ever exchanged, I just might be that… in it for the money.

But let’s explore that comment a little further from the start to the finish on just ONE ☝🏼 litter of puppies and maybe it will help people get a different perspective.

I’ll go all the way back to the purchase of the Momma, who just so happens to be one of the loves in my life, her name is Rousey and she is absolutely perfect ♥️

Momma - $3500, not to mention any vet care, food, ear crop, crate, toys, genetic testing etc… probably anywhere from $3500-$5500 over the course of 2 years, thank goodness she never had any major illnesses or injuries.

Now onto the breeding process once she is old enough for it and comes back genetically clear.

Progesterone testing $80 each test. Rousey only had to have 3 because we were monitoring her pretty closely, but this could take double to triple that number to know what day you need to breed on because sometimes testing can stall a heat or you have a dog with a weird cycle so it splits and so on… $240

Surgical AI - $350. You, of course, do not have to go this route, but we did because it was the best route to get a definite pregnancy with the best outcome for a litter.

Stud fee - $1500-…. Yet again this one can go sky high.. most really popular studs in the bully game are $5000+

Pregnancy check to confirm pregnancy - $85

Pre/Postnatals for Momma and supplements for newborn puppies - $185

Our whelping box was hand crafted by us, but chalk another $100-$300 onto that if you buy one

Puppies are here!! If you could add time and labor once this happens it would be $1 million!! We can leave that off though..

Unexpected visit to the vet because puppies are deteriorating by day 3 to find out they are dehydrated because mom doesn’t have enough milk yet, so you get supplies to start tube feeding, antibiotics to help make sure there are no infections and nutrical for an immune boost - $282.50

Formula to continue helping supplement puppies because mom NEVER produces enough milk for all 9 puppies - $418 (I rounded)

Unexpected vet visit when puppies are 3 weeks old because Momma stepped on one of the puppies accidentally and now she’s not using her back leg at all and it’s swollen - $85

Supplies to start litter training puppies to help future families have an easier transition into potty training - $150

First set of shots at the vet, well check for heart murmurs and parasites - $233.10

Ear crop - $900 this one is optional, but we choose to go with the breed standard, so we cropped ears of most of the puppies unless specifically requested by the owners not to

Unexpected visit to the vet because one of the puppies got an eye injury - $96

2nd set of shots for puppies - $105

Safeguard to worm puppies every two weeks from 2 weeks old - $90-$120

I haven’t included any hard food for once the puppies get weaned off of momma/puppy formula..

This process is not one to make money off of. Not when you put your heart into each individual puppy for hours and hours and do everything you can to make sure they are thriving. I haven’t even included everything that was paid for, for just one litter of puppies.

The goal for us, is not to make money off of our dogs. It is to better our breed so that they are healthy and perfect representations of what an XL American Bully is supposed to be. It is to spread a whole lot of love for our breed that gets a horrible wrap, usually from people who are ill equipped to handle a large caliber breed to begin with. It is to educate, so that maybe we can keep a few extra dogs from being killed due to the stupidity of a few.

IF we break even or profit even a tiny bit from any of this, then awesome, but that is definitely not the goal or why we, and so many others do it.

This perfect girl is the last man standing from our Rousey x Beefcake litter born on Halloween. Someone sn**ch her up and steal cuddles for the rest of her life!! 🫶🏼🫶🏼

She’s a very energetic girl who will do best in an active home. She’s not the dog who will lay around all day without getting her energy well expended first. Running buddy? Playmate for your kiddos (she’s been raised around plenty)? She’s smart as a whip and is going to likely be 90+ pounds once she pops after a little maturing! She reminds me of her mom, Rousey around this age!

Why do you breed dogs when there are shelters full of them? Why are ethical breeders important? You should SAVE dogs rather than create more.

Listen, I hear every single side of this argument and I understand where everyone is coming from, but maybe take a second to sit and listen to our side. The side of breeders who do this, not for the payoff, but for the love of the animal that we are creating.

When you sit back and listen to old school breeders talk about genetics and how they play a role in your dog, you should really open your ears up and pay attention. I have rescued dogs, I have helped rescues, rescue dogs and I believe there is a strong hold on what all of those people do for our population of pets that get here due to negligence and irresponsible dog ownership and breeding. But.. all of the dog breeds we have today come from crossing breeds to get to the ones we have today. Unless of course, you have wolves, coyotes, dingos, etc. (not a very high percentage of people, by the way). When the creators of these breeds successfully got consistent results out of what they wanted a dog to do, they established that breed and held it there. THAT is what I want. I want consistency. I want to know that whatever I am putting my hard earned money into is going to have the personality that its parents had, and their parents had and so on. I will never be able to get that through a rescue. I will also, never get that through an unethically breeding puppy mill.

Please understand that a large part of what dogs turn into comes from the environment that they are raised in, BUT when you get down to the genetics of a dog, the real chemical makeup, if you know where your dog comes from, then you know what your dog has the capability of becoming. If you do not know what you want and would like to save a dog, please rescue from a shelter. If you want to know where your dog comes from and what they are willing to and capable of doing for you, please contact a good breeder. We breed for consistency. For good, capable minds. For health. For structure. For the love of a breed.

I have been involved in conversation a few times within the past several weeks concerning why we breed this breed and why we breed at all instead of rescuing. What I have come to realize is that there is such a lack of understanding between people who rescue dogs and breeders who breed their breed for the right reasons. Explaining to people who are misinformed about who you are isn’t your job, but I hate it when this world is so quick to jump to conclusions and group everyone together as a whole too, so here’s a little peek into my brain when it comes to breeding our dogs..

I could go on forEVER about why I love this breed, but breeding them is a whole other level of passion and reasons why for me. Being a good breeder is not for the faint of heart and it is far from easy or to make money.

It is sleepless nights because you are waking up every two hours to make sure everyone has eaten.

It’s stressing over every single time one of your puppies doesn’t have a solid bowel movement or doesn’t eat like they did the last time you fed them.

It’s worrying about where they will end up and how their new families are going to treat them, because let’s be honest, you fall in love with all of them when you’ve literally watched them take their first breaths and held yours until they did.

It’s stimulating a stillborn puppy for half an hour, just praying that they will take a breath.

It’s sitting up with a new mom who is not really sure what she’s doing and is looking to you for comfort because you are her person.

It’s noticing your momma dog has gotten mastitis in one of her teats and is running a fever and lethargic so you are up with her all night to make sure she is okay because at the end of the day, SHE matters just as much.

It’s vet trip after vet trip because any little change is worth checking into with puppies, just the same as kids. And just like kids, puppies are constantly eating things they shouldn’t and playing too rough and getting hurt.

Breeding these dogs is a part of your life when it is done right and for the right reasons. Each puppy we produce matters and is cared for to the very best extent, all the way down to the homes they go to and what they are going to be used for. This list could go on and on as I think of more things involved in whelping a litter of puppies, but doing it for the money is a laughable statement because if you’re doing it correctly, you may break even a few YEARS after you start. We breed because we love our dogs and love this breed and we believe in putting the best minds and temperaments on top of the most healthy and badass looking, structurally correct dogs that we can.

So do I. And this is why I have CHOSEN this breed of dog. They LOVE people. Especially their people. Exposure and socialization are the key part of any breed’s attitude and reactions when they are taken out into public or put into rough situations. It’s very rarely a dog’s fault when they react poorly, even at home. Love them but make sure you remember they are a dog and your issues will always be minimal!
