Why is it important to be conscious and aware of what your horse is putting into their bodies? Especially coming into spring; Many horses suffer from a multitude of weight related health problems.

Primary causes of this are green grass, grain over load, and excessive hay.

Though these are not all the causes, many of these things can lead to things such as Mechanical (such as colic or choke), systemic illness, endocrine complications, and laminitis (or in plain terms founder).

What are some things you can do in order to negate these potential problems arising?

Dietary regulation - Know how much sugar and carbohydrates are in the food you are feeding, knowing how much your horse’s healthy weight is, and feeding appropriately for their weight class size is a great way to ensure your horse stays healthy. Soaking hay and getting low sugar grains are some of the easiest ways to help regulate sugar and carbohydrate intake.

Exercise - Just like in humans, exercise can be used to burn extra calories and keep them fit and in shape!

Limiting grazing- Similarly to humans every horse will digest their calories differently. Often green grass can lead to a multitude of weight related health concerns. If your horse is prone to, or having trouble with weight it could be due to the fresh green grass, in which case you will want to look into options such as dry lot, or a grazing muzzle for your equine partner!

As an example of weight related complications, we have a photo of a mare who was not being kept on a restricted diet and therefor heavily at risk of foundering. Due to the diligence of her owner and a complete dietary turn around, she is looking like a totally different, happy and healthy horse!

We encourage all horse owners to be aware and diligent coming into the spring, and as always call us if you have any concerns or questions regarding your horses health!

Happy horsing!

Let's talk about sleep, in particular, REM sleep,

What does REM stand for? It stands for Rapid eye movement.

REM Sleep is important for your horses learning, memory, brain function, immune system, behavior and overall comfort.

Yes, horses can sleep standing up but CANNOT enter REM sleep unless lying down.

So how do we insure our horses get enough sleep? Make it comfortable! Comfortable bedding, environment, body temperature and some times for our oldies pain management!

Let's talk early treatment!

Below we see two sets of xrays managing injury and arthritis.

The first. Received late treatment with 6 months between initial injury and xrays, and advancement of the osteoarthritis spread quickly and was detrimental to the horses movement.

The second, recieved treatment right away such as alpha 2eq injections, supplemental and physical rehab
In the bottom images you can see remarkably less damage to the joint than the first after twice the amount of time!

It is always a good idea to treat clinical signs when they present, by doing so you may be able to extend your horses riding career, the amount of time you have them, and overall comfort!

Give us a call for your treatment needs!

Seems it's always colic season. Did you know horses cannot vomit? We must alleviate gastric reflux with a NGT. Common causes of gastric /SI distension are impaction, ulcers, anterior enteritis, or a severe SISO (strangulating obstruction), such as caused by a lipoma. Call the equine team at 541 924 1700, and we can help with intensive medical care of equine colic.

What's something you should look out for this coming fall?

As horse owners, we know each season brings different things to keep an eye out for with our equine partners.

In the fall, we like to watch out for Laminitis (in plain terms founder). The green grass comes back with the rain, and for some horses this can cause laminitis.

What can you do to help avoid your horse getting laminitis?
-Limit your horse's access to lush grass
-If limiting their access is not doable, your horse may benefit from a grazing muzzle.
-Regular exercise and weight management
-Low sugar low carbohydrate feeds
-Soaking or hay for 15-20 minutes a day.

As always, call your vet if you begin to see symptoms and have questions, or if your horse is actively foundering!

Happy Fall!
