Teaching Tuesday!!
Monica and I have been having some training sessions with an up and coming local dog trainer, Zion Parks. I learned of Zion through a client. This particular client had an extremely fear aggressive dog who had been “released” from several other veterinary hospitals. After a few tumultuous visits at Gardner and Hydrick, I suggested this client reach out to a trainer.
Through a series of events, or maybe even sheer luck, he met Zion. The difference Zion made in this client’s pet was remarkable. I would even dare to say it was a miracle. Seeing these results, I felt compelled to reach out to Zion and I am glad I did.

Although I am a little biased, I feel Monica is extremely smart and trainable. She has always had great house manners, but I have trouble getting her to come back to me when we are in a stimulating environment. I know the problem is with me and the delivery of my commands, so having someone correct my behavior is helpful. With Zion's help and me consistently working on the training aids Zion has taught me, I am laying the foundation for a solid recall. If you are interested in having some training assistance with a puppy or an older pet, I strongly recommend reaching out to Zion. He offers a free first "meet and greet" session. His number is 229-303-3656.

It’s Teaching Tuesday!! And today I am building on the Teaching Tuesday I posted a little over a month ago. In early October, my post talked about the importance of teaching puppies to settle in a crate and being comfortable in it for longer periods of time. Today I am continuing with that topic and giving a suggestion of a tool to help with achieving this desired behavior. One of the greatest dog gadgets made, in my humble opinion, is the Kong. The Kong is an oddly shaped toy made of a chew proof rubber with a hole in the center. I take about one cup of dog food and soften it by soaking it in water for a few hours. Using a potato masher or sometimes a food processor , I then mix it with a lower calorie canned vegetable. Once blended, I stuff the mixture in the Kong and freeze it. When I am ready to leave the house, I give the command “kennel.” Once Monica has entered the kennel, I give her the frozen Kong and shut the door. This provides her with a positive reinforcement for following the command and an activity to occupy her while I am gone. I make these ahead of time and have them stored in the freezer. Another place I have used the frozen Kong was when Monica was a puppy and car rides were difficult. Kongs provided her with a place to direct her attention instead of pacing around in the car. Now, as a 21 month old, I can put Monica in the car and drive all the way to the beach, which is over 3 hours away. My girl finds a seat, lays down and snores the whole way there!!

If you have a puppy and are looking for a veterinarian, Gardner and Hydrick Veterinarians is accepting new clients. We believe a well informed puppy owner creates a happy, healthy puppy and we are ready to help you and your puppy get the right start.
