One day will not fix the system.
Boycotting major corporations (Amazon, Walmart, Target, etc.) for 24 hours is great, but putting your spending on hold for one day will only bring a record low sales day, followed by a record high sales day.
If you want to make a real difference, this can't be just one day. Find a local business and SHOP SMALL. Pay with cash, if you can. There are so many ways to keep your money within your own community.
I promise, there are real families and business owners in your community and they rely on your sales to make rent and put food on their table. They donate to your kid's silent auction. They sponsor the little league team. And they NEED your support. Every day, another friend has closed their small business and every day, corporate giants continue to grow their profit margins at your expense.
No, not everything can be found via small business. At the rate that locally owned brick & mortar stores are closing, it's less every day. And no, not everyone has the time or resources to shop in-store or make more than one stop on the way home from work.
But please know that every dollar that you DO spend with a local business has a significantly larger impact than the dollars you DON'T spend with the corporations worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Just make the switch where you can:
- Independently owned market, bakery, CSA, or restaurants
* instead of Walmart, Kroger, Chipotle, etc.
- Independently owned coffee shops/roasters
* instead of Starbucks, Dutch, etc.
- Independently owned gift, home, book, and specialty stores
* instead of Amazon, Home Goods, Barnes & Nobles, etc.
- Independently owned pet supply & tack stores
* instead of Chewy, Petsmart, Wilco, etc.
And if you can't find it "Shopping Small", do a little research about the places you are doing business with. Have they wiped their DEI policies or are they standing firm against discrimination? Do they pay and treat their workers fairly or are they notoriously anti-union?
So, yes, please boycott major retailers this Friday, February 28th. But then, take that money you would have spent elsewhere and make a positive impact in your own community. I promise you it is worth the extra dollar or two, or the time it takes to drive downtown.
Please feel free to share and tag some of your own favorite small business when you do.
