of 1976, by a small group of animal lovers who wanted to make a difference in the abandoned and unwanted pets of Freeborn County. We did not have a formal meeting place or a place to shelter the animals that were taken in. We did, however have a shelter fund, which was building up slowly but surely. We met several different places and kept the animals we took in foster homes, which were difficult

to find. We had several foster home events trying to get people to foster, but that is hard to do when you take in an animal to foster as you get attached to them and do not want to give them up. We bounced around for many years and to many places. We were given up on a couple of times and asked the public for help in keeping the humane society going. Finally we got together a great group of people who were truly dedicated to helping the Freeborn County pets. We still struggled with fostering and meeting places but finally got a small office space where we could hold meetings and maybe once in a while, sneak in a cat or two to foster at the office. In 2006 the city hired an animal control officer who was really pushing for the city and the humane society to work together for the animals. Our director got together with the animal control officer and started brainstorming on the city shelter. They worked it out to where the city and the county would take in animals and when the city animal's time was up, the humane society would take them over and try and get them adopted out. When we got them, they were checked over by the vet and given their shots and spayed or neutered. We applied for spay/neuter grants to help with these surgeries. The animal control officer left to take another job and that left our director at the shelter. She talked to the city officials and started working on a plan to where the shelter would be run by the humane society but still be the property of the city as a no-kill shelter. It was a long process but was finally put into effect. The city and the humane society were awarded an award for this joint union in 2009. Amazon Wishlist Link:

Meet new gal Farrah! 👋🏼🐶

Farrah is a cattle dog mix born in April 2023. She came in as a stray with another dog. Farrah isn't very fond of the other dogs here at the shelter, so it might be best, if you have another dog, to do a meet and greet first to see how it goes. Say hey to new pup on the block - Dutchess! 👋🏼🐶

Dutchess is a breeder release Golden Doodle born in early February 2022. She is a happy, bouncy girl but she calms down nicely with pets and talking. Dutchess likes to play with toys and will even play fetch. She is a beautiful friendly girl and will only need a refresher course in potty training when she joins your home and your routine. Say hey to MacGregor! 👋🏼😺

MacGregor and his siblings came to us after being found as strays. We believe MacGregor was born in April of 2023. MacGregor is a sweet guy that enjoys playing with stuffed mice, crinkle balls and roller ball toys! He is a bit more on the independent side, and can be a bit reserved when he first meets a new person, but it isn't long before he is curled up snoozing next to you. MacGregor likes to be petted when he is laying next to you, and if he isn't laying next to you - he is snuggled up with a friend or sibling. MacGregor would prefer a calmer home with a kitty friend to keep him company, and help build his confidence, or he would like to take a friend or sibling with him when he gets adopted! We believe Elliot was born in April of 2023, and would do best in a calmer home with a feline friend to keep him company, and help boost his confidence. Elliot is a gentle fellow, who can be a bit shy with new people at first, but as soon as he sees a friend or sibling getting attention, he moves in for some too! Elliot likes to be petted and will get his quiet purr going in no time! If he isn't snuggled up with a friend or sibling, you will find him in play mode or laying next to wherever you are sitting. Fergus came to us after being found as a stray with his sister. We believe he was born in April of 2023, and would do well with most ages and other animals with proper introduction. When Fergus first came to us, he was a bit wary of people at first but he warms up quickly and loves attention! He also enjoys laying and playing with his friends, or any toy he can find!
