of 1976, by a small group of animal lovers who wanted to make a difference in the abandoned and unwanted pets of Freeborn County. We did not have a formal meeting place or a place to shelter the animals that were taken in. We did, however have a shelter fund, which was building up slowly but surely. We met several different places and kept the animals we took in foster homes, which were difficult

to find. We had several foster home events trying to get people to foster, but that is hard to do when you take in an animal to foster as you get attached to them and do not want to give them up. We bounced around for many years and to many places. We were given up on a couple of times and asked the public for help in keeping the humane society going. Finally we got together a great group of people who were truly dedicated to helping the Freeborn County pets. We still struggled with fostering and meeting places but finally got a small office space where we could hold meetings and maybe once in a while, sneak in a cat or two to foster at the office. In 2006 the city hired an animal control officer who was really pushing for the city and the humane society to work together for the animals. Our director got together with the animal control officer and started brainstorming on the city shelter. They worked it out to where the city and the county would take in animals and when the city animal's time was up, the humane society would take them over and try and get them adopted out. When we got them, they were checked over by the vet and given their shots and spayed or neutered. We applied for spay/neuter grants to help with these surgeries. The animal control officer left to take another job and that left our director at the shelter. She talked to the city officials and started working on a plan to where the shelter would be run by the humane society but still be the property of the city as a no-kill shelter. It was a long process but was finally put into effect. The city and the humane society were awarded an award for this joint union in 2009. Amazon Wishlist Link:

Happy Caturday everyone! - Babes & Mabes 🥰

Babes and her bestie Mabes came to us after being left in a tote outside the shelter door. We believe Babes and Mabes were born in November of 2017, and would do best in a calmer home, together, with older children or adults only. Babes is a very sweet gal that can be a touch shy at first, but she warms up very quickly and absolutely adores attention! As soon as you pet her, she will start rubbing all over your legs, or rubbing her face on your face while purring up a storm! She also gives frequent head boops, and will make happy biscuits! If no humans are around to pet her, she immediately returns to snuggling with her best friend Mabes. Mabes is a bit more on the reserved side than Babes but after some time she does enjoy the occasional chin or tailbone scratch. Unfortunately Babes and Mabes have tested positive for F.I.V. and will need to be kept indoors and be the only kitties in the home, or share their home with other F.I.V. positive kitties. F.I.V. is not contagious to any human or other animals besides cats, and does not require medication of any kind. Babes can't wait to find her forever home with her best friend Mabes! 🚨 Sunday, Monday and Tuesday real feel temps will be in the negative double digits for highs and lows! 🚨 Help outdoor fur babies by double checking your vehicle before starting it / pound on the hood, move slowly when taking off. Hi! 👋 I'm Elliot! 😺

Elliot and his siblings came to us after being found as strays. We believe Elliot was born in April of 2023, and would do best in a calmer home with a feline friend to keep him company, and help boost his confidence. Elliot is a gentle fellow, who can be a bit shy with new people at first, but as soon as he sees a friend or sibling getting attention, he moves in for some too! Elliot likes to be petted and will get his quiet purr going in no time! If he isn't snuggled up with a friend or sibling, you will find him in play mode or laying next to wherever you are sitting. He enjoys chasing string toys, stuffed mice, crinkle balls or spring toys! Elliot is a very curious guy that loves to check out new surroundings, and keep an eye on any action that is going on. Maggs came to us after being found as a stray. We believe Maggs was born in August of 2022, and would do best in a calm home with older children. Maggs is a quiet gal, that is a very gentle soul. More often than not, you will find he snuggled up in a cozy bed alone or with a friend or two. She does well with other cats, and likes being petted and talked to. She is nervous of loud noises / fast movements, but improves each day. Maggs is looking forward to finding her forever home with a cozy bed to call her very own! When Fergus first came to us, he was a bit wary of people at first but he warms up quickly and loves attention! He also enjoys laying and playing with his friends, or any toy he can find! Fergus loves to be petted, and talked to - he may even talk back a little bit when he is feeling comfortable! Sydney is an American Foxhound who was left behind by her owners who had owned her from a pup. She was born mid-May 2016 and has a lot of energy and plenty to say. Zelda is a elegant beautiful and strong tabby girl, born in August 2023. Her previous owners didn't do right by her and left her and two friends abandoned in carriers and a caring soul brought them to us. Zelda doesn't seem to like other animals very much, but that could be just the stress of her current circumstances. She sure is affectionate to humans though and likes to talk and purr. Smokey is a very sweet guy that came to us as a transfer from another shelter. We believe he was born in February of 2021. Smokey can be a bit reserved / shy with new people, but once he gets to know you he LOVES to be petted, get chin scratches, or even give you a nose boop! We believe he would do best in a calmer home, with a family that understands he may need a little extra time to adjust to his new life.
