Yes! Pigs can be potty trained, and its actually WAY easier than people realize! π·π½
Pigs are extremely food-motivated, so potty training really comes down to repetition + reward.
Hereβs how we do it:
1οΈβ£ Pick ONE potty area
Consistency matters more than space.
Limit your pig to a few rooms at first and keep the potty box centrally located.
(Best potty box + litter type are listed in the bonus tips below.)
2οΈβ£ Timing is everything
Take them to their potty area right after meals and naps. Start paying attention to patterns: If your pig p*es 5 minutes after drinking - note it. If they p*e 20 seconds after waking up - hatβs your window! Once you see the rhythm, training gets MUCH easier.
3οΈβ£ Reward immediately - with BIG praise!
Treat delivery needs to happen within 2-3 seconds so they connect the dots. We also celebrate loudly.
Yes⦠there is singing.
Yesβ¦ there is a p*e-p*e dance. π
4οΈβ£ Use the same cue every single time.
Say it as you place them in the box.
Simple phrases work best: βGo potty!β
βPee-p*e time!β Consistency will build expectations.
5οΈβ£ Never punish accidents.
Pigs already learn insanely fast and fear only slows them down. This process is about trust and your ability to notice their natural cues. If you want them potty-trained, then you have to do the training. And it goes soooo fast if you can just commit to focusing on their bathroom schedule!
(If they do have an accident and p*e and you catch it in a paper towel - save it for one of the bonus tips below!)
Pretty soon, they will go to their box when they need to go - all on their own! Sometimes, and especially at first... they will wait until you are watching (because they want their reward.) Don't be surprised if they go to their box and CALL you to come see.
We have successfully potty-trained pigs in 24 hours with litter boxes and pads. We have taught pigs to even ring a bell to go out to p*e. They can learn anything through repetion and reward!
Save this if youβre thinking about adopting a pig. What other questions do you have about pigs?
BONUS TIPS (these matter):
π½ One pig is easier than two. If training multiple pigs, puppy pads can help until the pick their own box. There will be debate. π€£
Use a wide box with low sides and wood pellets. We have a storefront with the best ones we've used. Do not use cat litter.
π½ Leave a scent marker while theyβre learning. Clean the box regularly - but leave a p*e-p*e paper towel in the box so they associate the smell with where to go.
π½ Find their SOUL SNACK. Every pig has one. That high-value treat ONLY happens during potty success. Cherry tomatoes, apple chunks - you know what they love.
