Our beautiful strong old Lady Nana is gone.

She came here two and a half years ago after being rescued from a business that direct ships to Quebec slaughter houses.

She was definitely a spent old workhorse, reflecting a history of overwork and lack of care in all of the old injuries she carried with her.

She was slow to warm up to us, but after that first summer bath and glow up, it seemed she then understood this was a different place and there was no more struggle for her.

She had Cushing's, an extremely pronounced swayback (which for workhorses is often a sign that they were started way too young), neuro impairment in her back end, and a bum back leg, as well as severe arthritis. .

Nana, may you be in peace. We envision you now restored to your young glorious self, with no more pain and no more worry.

See you on the other side dear old girl!

Winter is always a very busy time, trying to keep everybody warm and toasty, making sure everyone is drinking enough, and ensuring that all of our elder horses are faring well in the cold.

It's also a time where we are inundated with calls about animals who need our help. This winter has not been any different, unfortunately.

We've taken in quite a few new equines and we will post them here throughout the next month.

In the meantime, here's a really cute picture of our big blind Percheron Gunny, giving our one-eyed senior Raquel some kisses over the fence!

It's that time of year...❄️❄️☃️

We've been busy battening down the hatches, putting up wind breaks, anchoring buildings against the wind, and doing our best to make everything storm proof, so that all of our horsey and pony babes will be cozy through the winter.

We've got all our coats out- freshly clean and mended.

Gunny and Nana who are size 90 and 84 wanted to show off their fresh winter jackets!

Wishing you all a warm and healthy winter!

Lots of new horses coming in. Along with it are the excuses..."She's old,", "He's always been a hard keeper", "She doesn't like our hay anymore"...

Okay- horses go through lots of changes in life-- our care needs to change with them, according to their needs. This goes for any animal. Heck, it goes for all of us.

Three weeks after intake, newbie Penny has gained 30 pounds. She is increasing muscle tone already. She is perky and no longer hangs her head constantly.

What did we do? Fed her, watered her, and wormed her.

Welcome Penny! We love you already!

We've been more quiet than usual, as many of you have probably noticed. The kind of quiet that is a result of more than just being busy- which of course is always the case.

It's time now that we let everyone know that our Big beautiful Max, the oh-so-special gentle giant whom we've enthusiastically shared with you over these many years, has passed on. His departure came in the middle of the night this mid-summer. He had not been sick, which we are grateful for.

Max was the first big, old Belgian who walked through our doors. The day was unforgettable- an emergency intake needing to happen in the middle of a blizzard. When he came in, he was tattered and skinny, smelly and ragged, with very little hope in his eyes. But it didn't take long for him to catch on- we were excited to show him what life would be like now with us, and that meant all good things, everyday!

He repaid all of our efforts with so much trust, openness, gratefulness, and comradery.

To say this horse will be missed is such an understatement.

Thank you to everyone out there (you know who you are) who helped us take primo care of our old dude, even when he wasn't enthusiastically cooperative (if you know, you know!) and for all the acts of love you helped us to bestow upon him. I'm sorry it took so long to announce such an important departure. I've really struggled with this loss and it's my go-to sometimes to just not talk about it until I have to.

Until we see you again buddy, we'll be missing you so very much

Charlie, our funny man, who we found out absolutely loves the water and to take showers on hot days, also has a proclivity for general, daily goofiness!

When they have what they need, their personalities really come out!

This old lady, Raquel, eats like a slob, but with very few teeth left, who can blame her?!

We love all our oldies. And there's no excuse for an old horse to be skinny.
They just need extra care and attention to nutrition!

Our big beauty Maven 😍

She has changed so much since coming to us seven years ago. No longer defensive and distant because she knows this is a different environment.

She isn't afraid anymore.

Bobolinks and Savanna Sparrows abound in our fields in Freedom/Albion!

We're happy to be a part of this conservation project!

Do you know ? Peace Ridge was founded in 2001 in order to address animal cruelty, neglect and exploitation, and to promote vegan ethics in New England. Peace Ridge advocates for all animals – farmed animals, equines, companion animals, and wildlife. So of course they also provide safe nesting habitat for Bobolinks! Thank you for your partnership with Ag Allies and compassion for all animals, Peace Ridge!

Miss Sassafras, aka Sassy, our Morgan girl, looking as pretty as ever. ❤️

She was born on a Morgan farm here in Maine. But she didnt have "the right white markings" to sell to their clientele, so she was left out in a back paddock with the other "rejects" . Her socialization and training were completely neglected.

This is a common occurrence in big money horse breeding. And it's also a sure way to dead end a horse. As a consequence of her complete lack of handling, she was destined for auction- pretty much a sure ticket to the complete unknown. Alot of horses like her end up slaughtered.

She's a high stress horse, but she enjoys a quiet life with us, her friends. ❤️
