Maple season will get moving again this week as the temps will be near 50. A couple new things to look for as you tour our maple shop. The FIRE & ICE logo has been extended to all of our classes of maple syrup. The ice can be a challenge during the season and the roaring wood fire adds a special flavor to our syrup.
We also have a new product for you to try. Ruby's Reg Wing Sauce.
(A suggestion by several of our customers for a BBQ wing sauce.) It will be available for you to try and take home. Our Golden Retriever is featured on this sweet BBQ wing sauce bottle. She will be running around greeting folks too.

Maple and Honey folks: Some pictures as we have been making syrup this year. Our Maple Taste and Tour is less than a month away March 11 and 12th! Hope to see you there.

Wow! I think I have been pretty lazy about Facebook posts! OK I am old! And i spend a lot of my computer time on Forums like the Ford barn talking about our 1932 Ford Dump truck that represents our hobby Maple and Honey business.
So Bees first: We had 4 hives last fall but it looks like maybe only one has made it through our fairly mild Erie area winter. We do have honey on the shelf from last year.
On maple: The pre-season starts with lots of getting ready items, like putting up lines and setting containers. We tapped our 625 taps on Feb 5th and have had sap almost every day. We made most of the sap into Golden Delicate Amber Rich and last night even made some Dark Robust at the end of the evening.
We will be at Asbury Woods March 4 and 5th, with maple information and maple syrup products!
Then our big event, the 20th annual Northwestern PA Maple Taste and Tour will be on March 11 and 12th. The event is open to the public and free! There are 17 + sugarhouses that will be open to talk about our syrup operations!
Regards,
Chris and Cheryl

Maple folks,
We will wrap up the Asbury Woods Maple festival tomorrow April 3rd. Wow we had great fun visiting with guests after they had toured the sugarhouse and other stops. If you have never walked the board walks throught the woods it's great!
Thanks to Cheryl and Martha, for their help! And the staff at Asbury for inviting us to their facility. I had a grand time. Our product selection will be a little thin tomorrow but we will be doing educational talks about making maple syrup and Bee keeping. Also tastes of syrup, sauces, and maple products till we run out!

As we catch our breath after a busy Taste & Tour weekend, our thoughts go out to all the friends and family that visited with us over the last week! The house is empty and quite! The shelves in the maple shop are bare, the sugarhouse has warm jugs of syrup setting on the table that we made yesterday.
How thankful we are for the visitors that braved the blizzard conditions to taste our fresh syrup warm from the evaporator, and sample the maple cotton candy and other confections made with our pure maple syrup!
The sap is flowing good and we just reached 100 gallons of syrup for the season. The run yesterday was very good. The sap from Gary G, and the Ellis famliy and our 625 taps totaled 750 gallons. We boiled from 2:30 to 9:30 making Amber Rich with wonderful flavor.
Our next big maple event will be at Asbury Woods on April 1'st for their Spring Maple Open house.
Our thoughts are with our neighbors, the Sherman family, I will personally miss Dale stopping in to visit and talk about hunting, tractors, kids and making maple syrup.
Regards,
Chris And Cheryl

Maple folks,
The warm weather has moved our syrup into the very sweet and Dark Robust class. We will be canning another 10 gallons of it today. Friends and family visited the sugarhouse last night. We made 10 gallons of syrup, from 360 gallons of clear, cold, 2% sap, which we gathered from 30 small sugarbush systems around the area. Based on the quantity normally produced in a average year, our maple season is near the halfway mark.
Maple cream, and maple candy are also planned to be made today for the Taste and Tour this weekend. Cotton Cabdy and maple peanut butter will be on the shelves too. If we have time some maple coated popcorn may be available. Our famous Maple sugar candy leafs surrounded by milk chocolate are mouth watering!
Weather will be cool to cold. Dress Warm to spend some time in the sugarhouse around the wood fired evaporator. Also plan to spend some time in the warm shop areas, for all kinds of maple snacks and some visiting with friends and neighbors.
Tractors will be on display in and around the shop, and the 32 Ford truck is ready for its first event. You never know it might get out for a ride if the roads are dry!
With 19 sugarhouse on the tour this year there are several stops you can make to learn about making syrup, and about keeping bees also. Hope to see you this weekend.

Maple folks,
Our maple syrup has been coming out a wonderful Amber Rich color and flavor. Today we will can syrup for the Taste and Tour, March 12th and 13th, from 10-4. Maybe make some additional maple candy and possibly maple cream. Cheryl packed some of the maple candy that is chocolate dipped! Our mixed hardwood slabs are working great in the arch to boil the 2% sap into finished pure 100% natural maple syrup!
We gathered 600 gallons of sap yesterday,. Most from our rented roadside sugarbush, and some from our neighbors the Ellis family, and 10 gallons from the Great grandsons, Rhett, Cooper, Jackson and Colton. Weather is rainy today. Might be some more sap waiting for us? Stop in and see us on the tour. Along with several tractors to view we have the new baby, our 32 Ford dump truck!

Well we are in "getting ready mode" for making maple syrup. Its a similar dance each year. Mother Nature tease us with a few bright and sunny days in late January. Sugarmakers get the itch and begin working on equipment and the sugarbush to be prepared for the first run of maple sap. Some sugamakers in the area got their taps in last week and did get a run. We will try to complete the tapping of the 625 taps tomorrow. Weather will warmer a couple days this week. There is a chance that we may be making syrup soon!

About Us

Our family has been making syrup for several generations; we have sugaring pictures displayed from circa 1920.

My father Earl Casbohm converted a small building to a crude sugar house. He set up some cinder blocks for an arch with an old 3 x 5 flat pan. We used slab wood to stoke the fire and the sap was added to the evaporator one bucketful at a time. The smell of the steam was great. That's when I began helping, about 1965. We upgraded to a antique Warren evaporator. This was 3 x 10 and was converted to an oil fired rig. Most of the syrup we made was Medium, Dark or "B" Grade.

After helping make syrup with family and friends for many years, we started to build our own sugar house in 2001. Currently my wife Cheryl, our sons Eric and Adam, daughters Kelly and Stacy, grandsons Nic and Mike, and granddaughters Marly and Addison help during syrup season.
