Meet Bandit and read his story! Late last year Jill decided to foster a shy, scared little terrier from the shelter. Taking him home he was frozen in fear. He soon learned that Jill and her mom weren’t so bad and that he actually kinda liked them. Jill and her mom also decided they liked him and made it official. Bandit was part of the family! Only problem was, Bandit was terrified of everyone else and would bark his head off at anyone coming into the house. Jill’s mom requires in home nurse care so this was not a good situation for Bandit with lots of strangers coming around. So Jill reached out to ABQ Bark University for some help. We took it slow (as you should with behavior training) and worked on building Bandit’s confidence along with pairing new people with only good things. This video is from our last session. Bandit had never been on a walk before because she was scared how he would react plus he never wanted to leave the house. Anytime she walked out the garage, he’d hit the threshold and stop. Here is Bandit enjoying himself and checking out his neighborhood! His walking skills aren’t perfect and honestly I don’t care! Not in this situation. Bandit is learning to be more confident and is able to get out without fear of all things! He still has some things to work on but he’s come so far and I couldn’t be more proud of him and the work, love and patience that Jill has shown him. Keep up the great work!

The 4th of July is fast approaching so the fireworks should be starting soon, if they haven’t already in your neighborhood! Many pets are lost, injured and/or traumatized during this time. Let’s do all we can to keep that from happening. The key ingredient here is being proactive. Work on desensitizing your dog to loud sounds, create a safe environment for them to go, make sure their information is up-to-date and maybe just find a way to celebrate with them that doesn’t involve loud scary noises. Now is the time to get these things in place, don’t wait until it’s too late! 🔥Next up in our Protect Your Pups from the Heat series is about ground temperatures!🔥 Yesterday as I stepped out of my car and on to the pavement the wave of heat that hit me was undeniable. We are hitting triple digit air temperatures meaning the ground is considerably hotter. Protect your dogs paws by walking early in the morning, late at night or DRIVING to a park with grass and plenty of shade to walk around. Socializing your dog to wearing shoes is also a great option! If all else fails, play some enrichment games at home and don’t even risk it! A missed walk is better than a trip to the emergency room.

Communication is key when working with your dog. It’s easy to get frustrated when our dogs don’t do the things we want them to or what we think they should do. They are most likely frustrated too. But that isn’t their fault. They can’t do what we haven’t taught them. And taught them consistently. There are many different tools claiming to teach your dog to walk nicely on a leash. The real answer is there is no simple fix. Getting your dog to walk nicely on a leash is a product of training and practice. Collars, harnesses and leashes are foreign objects to our dogs so why would we expect them to naturally know what to do while on them? Today’s post is a little different. I want to talk not about dogs but the people that love them. This can be anyone from dog guardians to rescue/shelter workers to anyone with a love for dogs. Caring for another being is hard work. Don’t get me wrong, it is rewarding work but it’s still hard. Your love for them can be all consuming and you would do anything for them even at the expense of your own self care. Please remember to take the time to take care of yourself. Take breaks. Reach out to friends. Friends please check on your people. Many are not ok but keep pushing on. Be kind to one another. Remember you are loved and needed.

Meet Isabel! She came to hang out with us today at our Polite Patio Pup class and she is the sweetest girl! This mama dog was found as a stray pregnant with multiple pups. Do you know what your dog’s absolute favorite treats are? What they’ll go crazy for? Every dog is unique and has different likes so knowing what their favorite things are can be a huge advantage when it comes to training. Using high value treats when learning a new skill or in a high distraction area can make a huge difference in keeping your dog interested. High value can be just about anything such as cheese, hot dogs, or peanut butter. I’ve even met a dog that LOVES collard green stalks! Test it out and find what your dog loves! Have you ever gotten frustrated during a training session? Does it seem like your dog isn't listening to you or not understanding you? Working on a new skill and you guys aren't making that magical connection? Just stop! Take a break. No learning will take place when either of you are in that state of mind. Instead, sit with your dog, love on your dog or go get some air. Having a good relationship with your dog is much more important than having a perfect sit. Be patient with yourself and your dog. It's worth it.

Congratulations to the graduates of July’s Basic Manners group class! The participants of this class already had the basics down so we spent our time learning how to do them in public! We also worked on being able to be close to each other and maintain our cool. Today I want everyone to officially meet Bluto! This sweet, hunky bulldog did not have the best start in life. Used mainly for breeding purposes, he never learned how to be around other dogs and never had any choice in what happened to him. He bounced around to a couple houses before he found the person that would forever change his life for the better! For the first time in his life, someone took what he thought and felt into account. He’s had his struggles learning to accept his new furry brother and sister as well as multiple medical issues but his new mom meets him where he’s at and has made huge progress.
