Why does dog training cost so much?!
Because most dog trainers are small business owners, and we pay for all of our own stuff.
Most dedicated dog trainers are constantly continuing our education at workshops, seminars, and on different courses, which adds up but is invested in the dogs we train.
Good dog training takes time, effort, and dedication.

We want dog owners to succeed, and in order to be there for you, we need to take care of ourselves as well.

Investing in your dog actually saves you money in the long run.

So glad to be back!

We use actual client or personal photos on this site because we want to be completely honest from the beginning and we believe real life photos do that best. I always find it interesting that we consider showing a dog an alternate behavior a distraction.
Especially when it comes to things like reactivity.
We use 'distracted' so differently when it comes to people. You have a thing you're supposed to do and you get distracted by something you're not supposed to be doing.
Your dog is supposed to be taking a walk, sniffing, checking in, being mindful of where they're at on the leash, etc.
They get distracted by the other dog or the person.
You are in charge of getting them back on track. Reminding them what the task at hand is. Showing them and rewarding them for doing the right thing.

Dog play has always fascinated me.
Like children they figure out rules and who likes what as far as play goes. Are we wrestling or playing chase?
My 3 do this just about every night. Each one takes a turn as the 'victim' and the other 2 adapting to that dog's preferred method of being said 'victim'.
D likes to be chased. Lilith and Furry enjoy wrestling.
I supervise, as I would children, because things can get out of hand in a second. I practice calling them off and cooling things down so they don't go too far.
They have 'safe spaces' they can go to if they need a break and I enforce those spaces.
If they get overly tired, I make them stop.
Healthy play teaches dogs so much.
The problem is lack of supervision and understanding about what is actually happening.
Too many people think their dogs are playing when they're bullying or being bullied.
Good play is a give and take.

Ruby is scared of mostly everything. So we're doing some day training to get her acclimated to the world. Yes I'm letting her sit on my lap today. When we first started she wouldn't come near me so I'm fine being her safety net right now.

People training your dogs in public: if you see someone else doing training speak up and ask if you can train close to them.
I get it, it's a w space and you can do what you want but honestly for me, if you say something I'm more willing to cooperate and help you. We can discuss boundaries, methods, and how to help each other.
If you just slowly get closer I might just leave or do something your dog isn't prepared for but mine is.
Case and point I was with Mesquite this morning and there was a woman with a dog who was very obviously trying to train near us. No big deal. But Mesquite's reward is play, which caused her dog to completely disengage from her. The dog wasn't ready for it and if she'd talked to me we could've discussed it.
Despite my -not friendly- shirt I'd rather you say something. I won't bite.

Did you know dogs can become addicted to things like fence fighting, barking, and reactive behaviors?
Much like human adrenaline junkies, dogs can get hooked on the feeling these behaviors provide.
Especially if they don't have a different outlet that satisfies their needs.
I've said it before, Lucifer loves conflict. So when he realized that barking back at the neighbor dog scratches that itch, he quickly decided it was awesome.
He's met the neighbor dog, they're fine without the fence but teaching him that there is a better way to get that fix was a journey.
Corrections didn't work. He would stop and then go immediately back to it. Reward outweighed risk.
So we switched. Rather than keep doing something that didn't work long term we switched to play.
It scratched the same itch and he learned it was actually more satisfying because he got to be more involved.
Now, he doesn't need play every time the neighbor dog barks at him. We still do it sometimes and more often than not we do it outside him being barked at.
TLDR engage your dog in the things they need and they'll make better choices.
Lucifer covered in his own drool 😂

Have you ever heard the word "aversive" in dog training?
Most of the time it's equated with prong collars and e-collars.
We like to assume what our dogs find aversive.
So... You'd think aggravating a wasps nest would be averse to anyone, right?
Wrong. This is Lucifer, my German Shepherd who finds bothering wasps amusing.
We don't get to choose what's aversive.
