Yesterday I had the opportunity to attend the pet Basic Life Support class put on by the Animal Emergency Medical Training veterinary team, and obtain my Recover BLS certification!

AEMT is the gold standard for where to turn for up-to-date, veterinary-grade animal emergency response training. AEMT provides training for different contexts in which an animal may experience a cardiac and respiratory emergency (including the pet-owner/pet-professional class I attended earlier this year). And while the Basic Life Support course is more relevant to the veterinary hospital setting (two-person rescuer situations), the information and hands-on training remain highly applicable to emergencies that occur outside of the hospital. This is mostly due to the fact that the most important part of CPR is the ability to administer high-quality chest compressions. So being able to continue practicing that essential aspect of the training in a hands-on setting is so valuable. Plus, with the future expansion of our pet care services, the ability to incorporate manual breathing support with a breathing mask and an Ambu bag can further aid us in our attempts at successful resuscitation (excluding intubation in single-rescuer settings, as seen in the photo).

I'm so grateful to AEMT in bringing their Recover BLS certification course to Albuquerque this year! See you next time.

Accidents can happen. Since the legalization of recreational ma*****na, cases of THC toxicity in pets have become more common. If you suspect your pet has ingested a THC containing product, please seek immediate veterinary care.

We are here to help!

Recently I had the opportunity to go to the IAABC Animal Behavior Conference in Colorado. I’ve always had a general interest in this area of the pet industry, but mostly I knew there would be so many applicable principles to take away and apply to my business and our services.

A good understanding of animal psychology and behavior is such an important aspect of being able to provide high-quality, professional pet care services to our community. Even just within our pet sitting services, sure we might be primarily providing basic care and companionship, but we are also ensuring the mental and emotional wellness of your pets while you are gone and monitoring for any signs of stress or behavioral abnormalities. Especially because many abnormal behaviors (that the average person likely wouldn’t recognize without training and experience) can actually be signs of underlying medical issues that may require urgent veterinary care.

On top of all of that, there’s so much to learn about the human-animal bond, understanding canine and feline body language, knowing how to interact (and more importantly, how not to) with both friendly dogs and nervous dogs. These are such important skills that every professional pet sitter should have.

I have no intention of providing actual behavior and training services (leaving that to the professionals!), however we are now offering services directly related to the support of canine and feline psychological health and wellness with our new “Exercise and Enrichment” services. A big take away from the conference was just how much enrichment plays a role in the prevention of behavioral problems later in life and overall wellbeing. It was fascinating learning about the neuroscience behind it, what true “enrichment” actually looks like, and the numerous ways we can provide it to our pets.

You can check out our new Exercise and Enrichment services here! https://edenpetcare.com/pet-concierge-services/

Looking to learning even more next year!
