“Bloat” (aka GDV) is one of the most life-threatening emergencies that can happen at any time. Hire a pet sitter that knows what signs to watch for!

These are the sort of symptoms that would have me loading your dog up into my car immediately. It’s definitely not a time to wait until I can get ahold of you if you’re traveling.

Risk of bloat is the reason I don’t allow for high activity and play for your large-breed dogs within an hour or two after eating while they’re in my care. It’s also one of the reasons I recommend twice daily feedings (not once) and avoiding elevated feeding bowls for these guys, at least while they’re with me.

What a week! From a small pet sitters conference in Phoenix straight to a massive veterinary conference in Vegas. Lots of learning and lots of steps! These veterinary conferences offer sooo many lectures on a variety of pet health topics, and I didn’t even get to attend all of the ones that apply to the services I offer (thankfully I can access all lecture summaries though!). Plus, attending these annual conferences is one of sereral ways I work to keep myself up to date in the world of veterinary medicine and pet health care. 🐾😅📝

Woohoo! Officially a certified pet rescuer through the Recover Initiative!

I recently had the opportunity to head up to Colorado for a pet first-aid and CPR workshop that was put on by the American College of Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care and led by an actual emergency veterinarian.

As a professional pet sitter, we do have a handful of options to pursue training and certification as a pet rescuer/first responder. However, the Recover Initiative is the only one developed by veterinary leaders in animal emergency and critical care response and is considered to be the equivalent of the AHA version for human CPR. The information is up-to-date, evidence-based, and consensus based.

Coming from working in veterinary medicine myself, much of it was a refresher, but the ability to provide life-saving care to a pet (especially when the pressure of a real-life situation comes into play) should always be “refreshed” on a regular basis, both in knowledge and hands-on training. And I certainly learned a few new things!
