More pets are lost on July 4th than any other day of the year. What a great opportunity to teach our kids how to responsibly care for their beloved pets during a time when the sky is exploding!

Have your kids help set up a “safe space” for your pet to remain inside your home. This could be a comfy covered crate with their favorite chew toy and a noise machine, or your bedroom with the curtains closed and the TV on loud. (Even the garage is better than forcing a pet to stay outside during such a time.) Teach your kids the habit of being attentive when opening doors and fences during your indoor/outdoor parties. Walk your kids through checking for secured fencing and gates (a terrified dog can often escape a yard that normally confines them). Ask your kiddos to check that your pets have their collars on with up-to-date ID tags. Lastly, check that your pet’s microchip number is actually registered to you! And has your correct contact information with the microchip company.

The shelters are already full, let’s not burden them further by making them provide space for more lost pets.

Forest fires break my heart for their impact on human lives, pet’s lives and wildlife, as well as the impact on the already-burdened animal shelters.

If you’ve ever gone through a meet and greet with me, you’ve probably noticed that I’m not quick to be affectionate toward your dogs or even physically interact with them until they have made it clear that they want that kind of attention. I continue with this process when I start pet sitting for your pups, as I start out each visit by letting them come to me when they’re ready and dictate how interactive they want me to be. Even when your dogs indicate that they trust me early on (as they usually do!), I always remain aware of their body language to determine if they are clearly asking for affection or are *happily* accepting of it when offered (not forced). Even the friendliest of dogs are not typically thrilled about having cuddles or hugs forced upon them (in fact many dogs don’t like it at all but are just too polite to say so).

So for all pets in my care (because this definitely applies to cats too!), I will always take the time to build a relationship with them based on acceptance, trust and respect. And when they’re ready for some cuddles, so am I 😊 🐶 🐱

With summer festivities kicking off, we want to remind you about the symptoms of heatstroke and prevention tips:

-Never leave your pet unattended in a car
-When hot/humid, keep your pet’s time outdoors limited ​
-Keep your pet hydrated​
-Ensure your pet has ventilation and a cool environment​
-Dogs with short noses are at higher risk due to their condensed facial anatomy and restricted ability to cool themselves​
-If any signs of heat stroke appear, contact our team immediately. ​

This handsome boy is Weebles. He has cerebellar hypoplasia, a neurological disorder that affects his ability to stay balanced, walk straight, and control his movements. So he just loves to sit on my lap or my shoulder in which I can keep him securely in place, where he shows me how much of an affectionate cuddler he can be. I genuinely could sit in that position with him for hours, knowing how happy he is to be there. Making a cat like this have to get up is just the worst 😆
