People often complain about cost of puppy price, so I would like to share my experiences with raising healthy happy puppies. First you have to consider the cost of getting the right parents, testing, food/water bowls, indoor and outdoor accommodations for the parents, they are kept separate until mating which I am present for every breeding to ensure both are safe (sometimes the female may pull so I ensure I'm present so both are unharmed) I don't allow free breeding meaning I don't just throw them together. I also have to provide supplements for them during this time (9 weeks) plus increasing food intake. Two weeks before they are due to have their puppies they are brought in the house to acclimate to their birthing area which also includes taking them out several times daily/nightly and temperature checks twice daily. I take time off work to deliver the puppies (sometimes I have to inconvenience my mom because I cannot get off work) to ensure the momma is safe and doesn't have problems with delivery. Sometimes it's very stressful for me and momma if you have to help pull a puppy
because I don't want them hurt. Then comes taking care of momma and babies, cleaning papers 3-5 times a day, handling daily, making sure to deworm them on schedule, then when they are 4 weeks start weening from momma which means getting up earlier to make puppy mush and also in the evenings cleaning up after those meals. Next is when they are weaned making sure they have fresh water and food keeping track of worming, need vet check and shots. I also then move them to my living room to get used to sounds of TV, people moving around, cats or dogs-helps moving into new environment so they are not stressed when going into new home. Let's get into the real joy of raising these adorable fur babies...the p**p!!! It is a constant p**p factory going on...seriously I try so hard to watch and clean especially after they eat and I'm like where is this coming from??? I cleaned 8 piles consistently and have 5 puppies?? Also don't forget the sleep deprivation from them wanting to play at all hours of the night especially around 2-3 am, you dont sleep much!! You have to address tipped ears by taping and providing cottage cheese and separating for a week. They need to be microchipped so that is an experience I am grateful nobody else has to witness, my poor babies! I get all their shot records in order and all information for each puppy plus food. In the last year 2023 to raise two litters of puppies it cost almost $10,000.00 for housing, food, shots, wormer, treats, city licenses, vet bills, and others fees associated. THIS DOES NOT REFLECT THE TIME, EFFORT OR TAXES FOR THE FEES I HAVE PAID. IT ALSO DOESN'T REFLECT THE CONSTANT CARE OF MY ADULTS IN BETWEEN LITTERS . CLEANING KENNELS, SCRUBBING WATER BUCKETS, MAKING SURE THEY HAVE ADEQUATE SHELTER IN ACLIMATE WEATHER-I BRING THEM IN THE HOUSE WHEN IT'S TOO HOT/COLD.
Raising healthy happy puppies is a lot of effort, time and work which I take pride in. Seeing the happy puppies in their new home and how loved they are is why I do this. I really don't make a profit raising corgis, but I do get such a great feeling seeing all the wonderful homes these babies go into and are loved. Thank you for reading this long post if you did, I just want to share that a lot of time, love, and some frustration goes into raising puppies that people don't realize.
