Hi, I'm Yogi! I'm a happy, energetic German shepherd mix, just 3 years young. Some of my shepherd relatives are a lot bigger than me -- I'm an easy 45 pounds and walk pretty well on a leash. My volunteer and I are also working on "sit" and "stay," and as you can see from my picture I also love to chase balls. I'm an active fellow but an affectionate one too. Let me put my paws in your lap and give you a kiss on your chin! My dream is to belong to a fun, active, loving family. If you already have a dog, I'd love to meet them! I really want a playmate. Please come meet me in the Q Bldg. (farthest from the parking lot) today.

ALUBUERQUE – Dedicated people with big hearts make up the superhero volunteer team at the City of Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department’s (AWD). They are caring and devoted individuals who give their time to make a positive impact on shelter pets. Are you interested in helping these Albuquerque pets in need? Have at least 6 hours a month to help pets in need? If so, then join our everyday superhero team, the League of Volunteers.

“I was drawn to the shelter because of my passion for dogs and wanted to help my community,” said Stacey George, AWD (Superhero) Volunteer. “I support the shelter in many ways by walking dogs, fostering, transporting, fundraising and bake sales. Knowing that I'm making a difference in the lives of these animals by helping them find loving homes, makes all the effort worthwhile."

With so many pets in need, it takes a superhero team to get the job done. You don’t need to be faster than a speeding bullet or swing from webs. Your biggest superpowers are your time and talents. AWD can work around your schedule and will provide training. AWD’s volunteers do important tasks that can include socializing and walking dogs, playing with and cuddling cats, fostering, acting as ambassadors at offsite adoption events, supporting our clinic, taking photos, and much more. We're open 7 days/week for volunteer support, and yours would be appreciated any day you're available.

“Volunteering is a vital part of community building in Albuquerque,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “It brings committed people together to make our community a better place for all, including these shelter pets.”

“This is the time to answer the call,” said Carolyn Ortega, Director of Animal Welfare Department. “Your talents can enhance our shelter pets’ quality of life. Please be part of our League of Volunteers today.”

Must be 18 years of age to volunteer. Must be able to volunteer a minimum of 6 hours per month. To apply: visit www.cabq.gov/pets or email [email protected].

Meet Prince! Prince is a handsome 6-year-old Pitbull mix who’s ready to charm his way into your heart! This affectionate boy lives for attention and will happily soak up all the pets and belly rubs you’re willing to give. He’s not really into toys, but when it comes to treats, he’s all ears — they’re definitely the way to his heart! Prince gets very excited to see other dogs when they walk by, so we recommend a meet-and-greet if you have a pup at home to ensure it’s a good fit.

He’s easy to leash up and take out of his kennel, but he’ll need some work on leash manners as he can pull when he’s excited. With some patience and training (plus a few tasty treats!), Prince is sure to make an amazing companion. He’s full of love and just waiting for the right person to make him part of their family! Are you ready to be Prince’s favorite person?

Prince has been selected as office dog this week. You can meet him sitting up in our front lobby at Eastside shelter with adoption Counselor Diana. He’s a very good and happy boy as he’s spending time outside of his kennel.

Prince goes home neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, with a free personalized pet name tag and coupons for a free dog training class and free initial vet visit. All adoption fees are waived!

There is a superstition in veterinary medicine that “things come in threes” … That seems to be the case with these three dogs, all happening to need amputations in the past month! Three dogs, all now three-legged. It’s a good thing that dogs do absolutely great on three legs!!

Libby is still available at the east side shelter!
Hooray, both Angel Bear and Throttle have been adopted.

First there’s Libby A1911610, a beautiful 4-year-old Belgian Malinois mix with striking blue eyes. She was extremely shy at first, but Julie (clinic staff) and volunteer Arline worked with her daily to get her to open up and feel safe. She finally realized that the shelter was a good place for her and that we were taking care of her. Once her leg was amputated (due to an ugly fracture at the ankle), she really opened up and wanted so much to come out of her kennel! She was waiting at the kennel door to go out instead of hanging back. Libby still isn’t a fan of doors, nor does she like all the barking, but she is very smart and will likely take well to training, like most others of her breed.

Then there was Angel Bear—a petite 8-month-old cattle dog mix who came in with an old gunshot wound to a hind leg. The wounds were healed, but the old fracture not straight and it was causing her discomfort in the surrounding joints—so amputation was necessary. She was also a bit on the shy side especially with men, but she too started opening up with everyone. In fact, Angel Bear and Libby became fast friends, going on walks together, playing together, and just hanging out together. So cute! By being together they both improved and started coming out of their shells. It was awesome to see them encouraging each other! (UPDATE: Angel Bear has been adopted!)

And finally, Throttle A1912981, a young Australian Shepherd mix, came to us with old, poorly healed fractures of the femur and hip. Amputation was decided to prevent a lifetime of pain for this sweet boy. He was not shy like the two gals; in fact, he was all into playing right away! He wanted to play so much with the other dogs but had to wait until he was healed from the surgery. As of today, he is well-healed and is free to be the youngster he is! He likes his walks and walking side by side with other dogs. (UPDATE: Throttle has also been adopted!)

All three of these tripods are very good on leash, know sit and are friendly with other dogs. These dogs have wonderful demeanors, and all would make awesome family pets! As always, shy dogs take a little more time to acclimate but given that time they blossom.

Thanks to our volunteer, Stephanie, for making these Doggy Dating profiles!
Moo is such a great and beautiful guy, it is the mystery of the season as to why on earth he is still in the shelter.
Moo A1877555 is waiting to meet you at our Eastside shelter. All adoption fees are waived.

Do you remember that in almost every dog post we mention that all adoptions come with a free dog training class?
We want all of our adoptions to “stick”.
We want you to be successful with your newly-adopted dog.
We want your new dog to be happy, healthy, well-adjusted, safe, and well-behaved.
So if it’s Saturday, we’ve got Heart Dog Behavior and Training classes going on in our clinic lobby. These are some dogs (and owners) who took us up on our offer for the free dog training class. Curry and Freya are learning good manners, learning how to be happy and stay safe, and they’re getting lots of treats too!

What fun we had when Girl Scout Troop 218 came to our Eastside shelter to volunteer their time this morning. The girls made toys for the cats, treat pouches for the dogs, and “adopt me” posters for some of the dog’s kennels (see our stories for the adorable adopt me posters). They also filled kongs and empty toilet paper rolls with dog food, pumpkin, and peanut butter so the dogs can enjoy a treat while they’re waiting in the kennels to be adopted.

When it came time to clean up, these girls jumped into gear and made sure all was tidy and even swept the floors. They were also very respectful to all our cats and dogs during the shelter tour.

Thank you Girl Scout Troop 218! We’d love to have you back again someday!

A big yummy thank you to Krispy Kreme Donuts who gave a free dozen to EVERY person who adopted a pet this past weekend during our Bark in the Meow Year Adoption Event!
Twix, the cutie pictured on the right, is one of 84 pets who went to their new homes during the adoption event. And all of those adopters scored a new pet AND a dozen glazed donuts. It was a win win for everyone involved!

These strays came into our shelter on 1/15/25. Please share to help reunite them with their families.
