We have been busy filling sedatives this week for firework anxieties. We will be closed next Thursday and Friday in celebration of the July 4th Holiday. We close Wednesday at 1 PM, so please let us know as early as possible if your pet needs sedatives to get through the week!

UPDATE FOUND! Bruce was found and taken to the shelter, where his parents picked him up yesterday! Thank you to all who shared in his search!

One of our patients, Bruce, escaped out of a window in the area of Candelaria and Eubank. Bruce is microchipped and is used to being an indoor only kitty. If found, you can contact his people here:

Here is our 4th of July PSA. We are going to be closed on July 3rd and 4th and reopening on July 5th.

If your pet is showing any anxiety with the firework noises, please let us know before this Friday, June 30th so that we can be sure to have medications ready to pick up before the weekend!

If you are having a party, be sure that your pets are secured so they cannot escape and make sure your yard is secure. Check your microchip information and be sure it is updated as this is the biggest time of the year for lost pets due to anxieties from firework noises.

If your pet is scared, try to keep them in an interior room with soothing music (dogs apparently like Reggae music and YouTube has a 10 hour playlist here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NT--yDVhR8c )!

We have a few schedule changes this week that we want to alert everyone about.

Tomorrow, Wednesday April 19, we will be closing at 11 AM instead of 1 PM so that our entire staff can complete our mandatory OSHA certification.

We are also moving our regular staff meeting from the last Friday of the month to this Friday, April 21, so we will be closing at 3 PM instead of 5 PM and will have normal hours on Friday, April 28.

Here are our updated Holiday hours for Christmas and New Years. Please let us know as early as possible if you need any medication or food refills prior to closing for a few days to allow our staff to enjoy some time at home with their families!

Microfilaria

Does the thought of worms wriggling around in your blood vessels creep you out? Us too! Today, we started treatment for adult heartworms in Angie, the German Shepherd we posted about last month. Ironically, we diagnosed our second heartworm positive dog of the year today as well. Part of our test is to look at a blood sample to check for microfilaria, the infective larval stage of heartworms. These are the microscopic worms that are in the peripheral blood vessels, that mosquitos pick up during a meal, and then pass on to other dogs after maturing more in the mosquito. This was in the blood of our patient today, along with many more. Our mild winter and the wet conditions have made a great habitat for heartworm disease to spread. Historically, we have a pretty low rate of infection, but as more people opt out of preventative, there are more dogs susceptible to getting the disease. It takes 6 months for these microfilaria to become mature heartworms that reproduce and worsen the disease process. If you don't want these little creeps hanging out in your dog's bloodstream, call and make an appointment today for a heartworm test and preventative!
