June's Senior Cat Rescue

June's Senior Cat Rescue When my mother, June, passed away she had a senior cat named "Ninety Nine." That's when June's Senior Cat Rescue was born.
(15)

We are a 501c3 organization dedicated to rescuing senior cats from high kill shelters, promoting the adoption of older cats, and educating people about the benefits of adopting older pets. No one in our family wanted her, so I decided to drive to California to get Ninety Nine. On the long drive home, I decided that I had to do something to help the senior cats who are left homeless when their owner passes away or becomes too ill to care for them. Thanks, mom for inspiring me to help the seniors!

If you get our email newsletter, you’ve already met My Boy. This poor kitty has really been through the wringer. His owner passed away, and he had nowhere to go. He made the long journey from California to JSCR, and we are really glad he did. He was a very sick kitty who needed the specialized care we provide.

My Boy had horrible stomatitis that made it almost impossible for him to eat. He had a dental and lost 15 teeth. While recovering from his dental, we discovered he also had kidney stones, which are incredibly painful and dangerous as they can cause urinary blockages.

Stones can cause cats to urinate inappropriately, in My Boy’s case, he kept peeing in his bed. Thankfully, his foster mom knew that needed to be seen by a vet!

My Boy was given pain meds, steroids, and a plan to help with his stones. Today he’s a totally different cat. He’s exploring more, eating well, and he looks and feels better.

My Boy’s care has cost well over $1,700. We could really use your help to replenish our medical fund. Our medical fund is vital to ensuring we can give the seniors at JSCR the care they need and deserve. We can’t do this without you!

Let’s talk litter...we know no one likes about 💩 or 💦, but it’s important for your kitty’s quality of life.

One common reason we see senior cats surrendered is litter box issues. People think this isn't fixable or that it’s just bad behavior, but often, it has nothing to do with bad behavior and it is fixable! Here are some reasons your senior cat might not be using the litter box appropriately:

1. Arthritis – as they age, it can be harder to get in/out of the litter box or to turn around inside the box, so trying boxes with lower sides or different sizes might make it less painful/easier for your kitty to use the box.
2. Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) – seniors can get urinary tract infections that require antibiotics. Urinating outside the box or in inappropriate places might indicate your kitty is sick and needs to see a vet.
3. Stress – changes in their environment can cause cats stress which can lead to litter issues. Consider any recent changes in your life and see if you can adjust to lower your cat’s stress. Moving the box to a new location, pheromone plug-ins, adding extra litter boxes, and/or more frequent litter cleaning might just solve the problem.
4. Different Litter – as cats age, their feet can become more sensitive, so changing the type of litter you use might make them more comfortable when using the box. Also, as they age, clumping litter might start to cake to their feet. This requires your help to clean off and might mean a non-clumping litter is needed.
5. Our final handy tip is puppy pads! These are great for around the litter box if your kitty occasionally “overshoots” the box. These can also be used for accidents that happen in a specific area of your house where you can’t have a box.

Please share and let’s bust the myth that bathroom accidents make you a bad kitty!!

Did you know cats need dental care too? Yep, it’s true.

Like people, cats can get dental disease. Tartar buildup can lead to tooth decay and tooth loss. Bacteria growth can lead to gum disease, which can cause gums to recede and lead to loose teeth and infections. All of this can be extremely painful for your kitty!

We know you don’t want your kitty to be in pain, so we wanted to give you some signs to watch for that could indicate your kitty is experiencing oral pain. If you see any of these symptoms in your kitty, you should schedule an appointment with your vet:

1. Pawing at their mouth
2. Decreased appetite or weight loss
3. Dropping food, only chewing on one side, or only eating certain foods (like wet food)
4. Vomiting after eating
5. Swollen, red, or bleeding gums
6. Drooling
7. Bad breath
8. Teeth grinding/squeaking while chewing
9. Decreased grooming
10. Nasal discharge or frequent sneezing
11. Changes in behavior/hiding

We also recommend having your vet check your kitty’s teeth at their annual exam. This is a great way to catch dental issues early, before they become a painful problem. Please share to help get the word out, cats need dental care too 🦷🪥❤

Last week our Executive Director, Janet Philippsen, and Board Member, Vickie Harvey, attended the NM Humane Conference. This was an amazing opportunity for our team to network within the animal sheltering/rescue community, and to learn about what's new in animal welfare. We believe knowledge is power and are always looking to learn new things to better the lives of the seniors in our care and expand our impact. We are grateful to have learned quite a bit at this conference and feel inspired to do even more to help senior kitties in need!

Happy Caturday!!!

This lovely lady is Tortilla and she is at the Torrance County Animal Services, in McIntosh, NM. She came in as a stray in mid-July and had a chip, however, the contact info was not updated. The shelter believes she is 8 years old or older.

We have a soft spot for Torties, so we hate to see her hanging out in the shelter. Would someone please go and adopt her??

The Torrance County Animal Services is open Tuesday - Friday from 9 am - 5 pm and Saturdays from 8 am - 4 pm.
Address: 751 Salt Mission Trail McIntosh, NM 87032.
Phone: 505-384-5117 (main)

It is with heavy hearts we share the passing of our little Princess Autumn 🍂

Autumn has only been a part of the June’s family for a short time, but she made a huge impact. At 19-years-old, her spirit was bright, but her tiny body couldn’t keep up. Her teeth were causing significant pain, and today we found out she was diabetic and anemic. With the support and guidance of our vet, we chose to release Autumn from her pain.

She left this world in the arms of her foster mom after drinking one last blended tuna snack. The last words she heard were, “I love you”.

Autumn’s spirit, like so many others, will live on in the work we do. For whatever time they have, they will know comfort, and they will leave this world knowing how deeply they are loved. This is who we are. ❤️

We wanted to introduce you to a senior you haven't met yet, our adorably chubby diva 👑 Delilah.

Delilah joined us under very sad circumstances. Her dear owner, a fellow rescuer, sadly passed away, leaving Delilah in need of a new home. We’re so grateful to provide her with a safe and loving environment where she can thrive.

Right now, Delilah is enjoying the comforts of a foster home where she reigns as the only kitty—because that’s how she likes it! She’s settling in and loving all the attention. And we are loving those whiskers. Meoowww 😻😽

Thank you to our incredible foster family for giving Delilah the peace and comfort she deserves. Stay tuned for more updates on her royal highness! 👑💋💅🎀
