Julius, aka Mookie, says goodnight 😴
When my mother, June, passed away she had a senior cat named "Ninety Nine." That's when June's Senior Cat Rescue was born.
(15)
We are a 501c3 organization dedicated to rescuing senior cats from high kill shelters, promoting the adoption of older cats, and educating people about the benefits of adopting older pets. No one in our family wanted her, so I decided to drive to California to get Ninety Nine. On the long drive home, I decided that I had to do something to help the senior cats who are left homeless when their owner passes away or becomes too ill to care for them. Thanks, mom for inspiring me to help the seniors!

Want something to make your weekend a little sweeter? We have just the thing!
It’s $5 Friday! All donations for $5 Friday will help support My Boy and his medical needs 🩵
If you get our email newsletter, you’ve already met My Boy. This poor kitty has really been through the wringer. His owner passed away, and he had nowhere to go. He made the long journey from California to JSCR, and we are really glad he did. He was a very sick kitty who needed the specialized care we provide.
My Boy had horrible stomatitis that made it almost impossible for him to eat. He had a dental and lost 15 teeth. While recovering from his dental, we discovered he also had kidney stones, which are incredibly painful and dangerous as they can cause urinary blockages.
Stones can cause cats to urinate inappropriately, in My Boy’s case, he kept peeing in his bed. Thankfully, his foster mom knew that needed to be seen by a vet!
My Boy was given pain meds, steroids, and a plan to help with his stones. Today he’s a totally different cat. He’s exploring more, eating well, and he looks and feels better.
My Boy’s care has cost well over $1,700. We could really use your help to replenish our medical fund. Our medical fund is vital to ensuring we can give the seniors at JSCR the care they need and deserve. We can’t do this without you!

Let’s talk litter...we know no one likes about 💩 or 💦, but it’s important for your kitty’s quality of life.
One common reason we see senior cats surrendered is litter box issues. People think this isn't fixable or that it’s just bad behavior, but often, it has nothing to do with bad behavior and it is fixable! Here are some reasons your senior cat might not be using the litter box appropriately:
1. Arthritis – as they age, it can be harder to get in/out of the litter box or to turn around inside the box, so trying boxes with lower sides or different sizes might make it less painful/easier for your kitty to use the box.
2. Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) – seniors can get urinary tract infections that require antibiotics. Urinating outside the box or in inappropriate places might indicate your kitty is sick and needs to see a vet.
3. Stress – changes in their environment can cause cats stress which can lead to litter issues. Consider any recent changes in your life and see if you can adjust to lower your cat’s stress. Moving the box to a new location, pheromone plug-ins, adding extra litter boxes, and/or more frequent litter cleaning might just solve the problem.
4. Different Litter – as cats age, their feet can become more sensitive, so changing the type of litter you use might make them more comfortable when using the box. Also, as they age, clumping litter might start to cake to their feet. This requires your help to clean off and might mean a non-clumping litter is needed.
5. Our final handy tip is puppy pads! These are great for around the litter box if your kitty occasionally “overshoots” the box. These can also be used for accidents that happen in a specific area of your house where you can’t have a box.
Please share and let’s bust the myth that bathroom accidents make you a bad kitty!!
Did you know cats need dental care too? Yep, it’s true.
Like people, cats can get dental disease. Tartar buildup can lead to tooth decay and tooth loss. Bacteria growth can lead to gum disease, which can cause gums to recede and lead to loose teeth and infections. All of this can be extremely painful for your kitty!
We know you don’t want your kitty to be in pain, so we wanted to give you some signs to watch for that could indicate your kitty is experiencing oral pain. If you see any of these symptoms in your kitty, you should schedule an appointment with your vet:
1. Pawing at their mouth
2. Decreased appetite or weight loss
3. Dropping food, only chewing on one side, or only eating certain foods (like wet food)
4. Vomiting after eating
5. Swollen, red, or bleeding gums
6. Drooling
7. Bad breath
8. Teeth grinding/squeaking while chewing
9. Decreased grooming
10. Nasal discharge or frequent sneezing
11. Changes in behavior/hiding
We also recommend having your vet check your kitty’s teeth at their annual exam. This is a great way to catch dental issues early, before they become a painful problem. Please share to help get the word out, cats need dental care too 🦷🪥❤
Last week our Executive Director, Janet Philippsen, and Board Member, Vickie Harvey, attended the NM Humane Conference. This was an amazing opportunity for our team to network within the animal sheltering/rescue community, and to learn about what's new in animal welfare. We believe knowledge is power and are always looking to learn new things to better the lives of the seniors in our care and expand our impact. We are grateful to have learned quite a bit at this conference and feel inspired to do even more to help senior kitties in need!
Need something to get you through your Monday? Rust Is Gold Coffee has just the thing! Coconut Cream Cold Brew that benefits JSCR’s kitties. 🥥☕️🥤💖

Happy Caturday!!!
This lovely lady is Tortilla and she is at the Torrance County Animal Services, in McIntosh, NM. She came in as a stray in mid-July and had a chip, however, the contact info was not updated. The shelter believes she is 8 years old or older.
We have a soft spot for Torties, so we hate to see her hanging out in the shelter. Would someone please go and adopt her??
The Torrance County Animal Services is open Tuesday - Friday from 9 am - 5 pm and Saturdays from 8 am - 4 pm.
Address: 751 Salt Mission Trail McIntosh, NM 87032.

It is with heavy hearts we share the passing of our little Princess Autumn 🍂
Autumn has only been a part of the June’s family for a short time, but she made a huge impact. At 19-years-old, her spirit was bright, but her tiny body couldn’t keep up. Her teeth were causing significant pain, and today we found out she was diabetic and anemic. With the support and guidance of our vet, we chose to release Autumn from her pain.
She left this world in the arms of her foster mom after drinking one last blended tuna snack. The last words she heard were, “I love you”.
Autumn’s spirit, like so many others, will live on in the work we do. For whatever time they have, they will know comfort, and they will leave this world knowing how deeply they are loved. This is who we are. ❤️
Buttercup would like to remind you that next Saturday (August 10th) 4:00-8:00 pm only the Chipotle at 3600 Coors Blvd NW in Albuquerque will be hosting a fundraiser for JSCR!
That means you get to eat delicious food and help senior cats at the same time! It's a win-win 🌯 🌮 🐈🐈⬛!
All you have to do is provide code 6KPG8KD at checkout (in store or online) and June’s will receive a portion of the proceeds. We will be there (3600 Coors Blvd NW, Albuquerque, NM 87120) and can't wait to see you!
We hope you’re enjoying the Olympics.
If you have a cat, you might recognize some of these feline Olympic events!

We wanted to introduce you to a senior you haven't met yet, our adorably chubby diva 👑 Delilah.
Delilah joined us under very sad circumstances. Her dear owner, a fellow rescuer, sadly passed away, leaving Delilah in need of a new home. We’re so grateful to provide her with a safe and loving environment where she can thrive.
Right now, Delilah is enjoying the comforts of a foster home where she reigns as the only kitty—because that’s how she likes it! She’s settling in and loving all the attention. And we are loving those whiskers. Meoowww 😻😽
Thank you to our incredible foster family for giving Delilah the peace and comfort she deserves. Stay tuned for more updates on her royal highness! 👑💋💅🎀
It’s hot out there, so Molokai thought he’d demonstrate how he deals with this heat. He hopes it helps you stay cool!

🚨🚨BREAKING NEWS🚨🚨 We are so excited to share some great news with you! After 38 days of hiding, yes 38 days, Bootsie has finally decided her foster mom isn’t so scary after all!! 💗💗💗 Bootsie (13 years old) was surrendered to the shelter with Autumn and Betsy (both 19yo) when one of their owners passed and the other couldn’t take care of them due to caring for their terminally ill son. Autumn and Betsy adjusted quickly to their new home, but Bootsie struggled. Since her arrival in June, she has been in hiding. With the exception of occasional appearances at the food bowl, her fosters wouldn’t see her for days at a time. And touching her was absolutely out of the question. Until last night, when she finally took a leap of faith and let her foster mom touch her. Like people, some cats take longer to adjust to new environments. So when adopting or fostering, remember to have patience. Going to a new home is overwhelming, but we can help them by not having expectations and giving them time. We are so proud of Bootie! Please join us in celebrating Bootsie and her bravery! #ittakestime #patience #adoptdontshop #brave
Could these girls get any cuter? Betsy (in the box) and Autumn (in the bed) are doing wonderfully. These 19-year -old ladies are unbelievably resilient. We are so thankful we get to be a part of their story. It’s a special feeling to watch them thrive! 🥹💗 #thrive #happycats
Betsy and Autumn are catching up on their water cooler gossip. What gossip would your cat share at the cooler? #gossip #watercooler #catlife
We want get serious with you for a second. This is very important, so read closely… You…make…a...difference! Your support for JSCR changes lives, LITERALLY. Autumn found herself at the shelter at 19 years old. She was sick and in poor condition. She really had no hope. She would have wasted away slowly waiting for someone to help her. But because of YOU and your belief in what we do, Autumn will live the rest of her days comfortable and loved. She will get absolutely everything and anything she needs. These pictures say it all…from a shelter cage with only a thin blanket over newspaper, to a fluffy, comfy bed where she can lounge like the princess she is. YOU did this! YOU gave her a second chance and a happily ever after!! From the bottom of our hearts, and the hearts of every senior who comes through our doors, THANK YOU!!! #thankyou #makeadifference #savecats
We are excited to share that Bootsie took a huge step yesterday! Bootsie is 13 years old and painfully shy. She was surrendered to the shelter with Autumn and Betsy, the 19 year old cats. Bootsie has stayed in hiding since going to her foster home. In fact, she’s been affectionately called the blur by her foster parents because they only see her running for cover when she sees them. Well that changed yesterday, Bootsie came out and ate when her foster mom was in the room!! Hurray!! Being surrendered is a very stressful experience for cats, especially if they are shy like Bootsie. When coming to June’s, we always give them time to decompress and settle into their new environments at their own pace. There’s no hurry and no expectations. This helps them feel safe and learn to trust their new human families. We are so proud of Bootsie for taking this leap of faith, and we look forward to her continued progress! Thank you all for giving Bootsie this second chance at forever!! #yay #goodjob #shycatsneedlovetoo P.S. the hay in the background is from her rabbit roommate. 🐰
It is with the heaviest of hearts we share Mathias has crossed the rainbow bridge. Mathias had every reason not to trust people. He was found living outside, underweight, and covered in mats and fleas. He was FeLV & FIV positive and had inflammatory bowel disease. When he was first seen by the vet, we were told he might not live for more than a few weeks, but instead he gave us 6 months. Mathias had an eternally joyful and loving heart. From the moment we met him, he only wanted to give love. He would trill (aka prrttt) and meow repeatedly whenever someone walked into his room. He would use his paws to grab your hands and pull them to his face so he could rub on them. He loved his mouse toys and cardboard scratchers, but most of all he loved being with people. Because of your support, Mathias was able to thrive. He spent the last 6 months being doted on by his foster parents, and he felt the love and adoration of the June’s Army. We truly believe this is why he lived as long as he did. Mathias will be missed deeply by his foster parents and everyone at JSCR. This special boy will live on in our hearts and memories, and he will inspire the rescue of other seniors. Thank you all for giving him the best! More pictures and videos in comments.
We want to share some happy news to brighten your Monday afternoon. Gretchen, the 19yo senior, who lost her owner and sat in the shelter for months waiting for a family member to come get her, had been ADOPTED!!!! Thank you to Jen and Mark for opening their hearts and home to sweet Gretchen. We are so happy she has her own family again!! #adoptacatmonth #adoptasenior #yay #happyeverafter
Mathias wanted to thank everyone who sent him hugs for National Hug Your Cat Day. He felt so loved! 💗💗💗Today he got some fresh catnip. He didn’t know what to do with himself 😸 #catnip #hugs #catlover
Yesterday was hard. We were contacted by a young woman who lives in an area with few animal welfare resources. She found a 5-6 week old kitten who couldn’t use its back legs. Knowing this kitten needed immediate help, one of our dedicated team members made the drive to get her. The kitten, now named Angel, was rushed to the vet, where evaluation revealed she had no feeling in her back legs or tail. She had a puncture wound, was in a lot of pain, and was starting to go into shock. The vet suspected this sweet baby had been picked up and shaken by a larger animal. To know the extent of the damage, and possibility of treatment, an x-ray was done. It sadly revealed Angel’s spine was broken. She would never be able to control her bowels or bladder, and would not be able to regain use of her legs. We had to make the heart-wrenching decision to give Angel her wings, setting her free from her pain. This precious little soul didn’t have long in this world, but in her last few hours, she knew love, kindness, warmth, and affection. She left this world hearing how special she was and how much she mattered. This is why our work is so important, and why your donations are so vital. Because of your support we had the ability to get Angel the help she needed without hesitation or delay. We wish Angel’s story could have ended differently, but we are grateful we were able to love her and ease her suffering. She deserved that and so much more. Please share Angel’s story and donate if you can, even small amounts make a huge difference. Donations support our medical fund which enables us to respond quickly when situations like Angel’s arise.
