Say hello to "Pauline!" "Pauline" is a beautiful African Lungfish at the NM Museum of Natural History and Science. Her caretakers were concerned about her enlarged and cloudy eyes, so what better place to bring "Pauline"?
"Pauline" saw one of our specialists, Nancy McLean, DVM, DACVO, board-certified ophthalmologist at VCA Animal Hospital & Referral Center. She examined "Pauline" and diagnosed her left eye with chronic glaucoma. Here are pictures of the visit.
To reduce any stress on "Pauline," she was placed in a simple recirculating system that maintains anesthesia. Dr. McLean examined her eyes with a slit lamp biomicroscope to visualize the structure of the eyes. Next, Dr. McLean checked the intraocular pressures to detect or treat ocular diseases in both eyes. Then, Dr. McLean examined both Pauline's eyes with ultrasound to identify abnormalities. The last image is of her right eye via ultrasound.
Dr. McLean provided recommendations to Pauline's caretakers to manage her glaucoma and to help her live a happy and comfortable life. ๐
