Lucky Paws: a storefront operation in a shelter business. In 2006, Albuquerque’s HEART Ordinance made it illegal for pet stores to sell dogs and cats that were not sheltered or rescued animals within city limits. This forward-thinking effort put a serious dent in the puppy and kitten mill businesses in the area, and left a void in commercial venues where people could view animals available as pets

. To fill this newly found void, the City’s Animal Welfare Department opened Lucky Paws, a retail store in Coronado Mall where only Animal Welfare shelter animals can be displayed for adoption. Lucky Paws has been an incredibly successful venture and has contributed to an increase in the public’s opinion of what a shelter pet looks like. Since Lucky Paws opened 10 years ago, 22,000 have found homes through the adoption center. Lucky Paws is supported by a 501c3 registered charity, Friends of Lucky Paws, that assists with funding services and purchasing items needed to operate the store. Help Us Spread the Word!
• Encourage potential pet adopters to go to Lucky Paws.
• Do not patronize backyard breeders or puppy mills. Adopt or buy pets from reputable breeders with valid permits.
• Spay or neuter your animals. All Lucky Paws pets are spayed or neutered, immunized, microchipped, licensed, and ready to go to their new, loving, forever homes. All new pet parents must meet the City of Albuquerque qualified adopter requirements. Who is a qualified adopter?
• Must be at least 18 years old
• Has never been convicted of any form of animal cruelty under any law
• Has never been convicted two or more times for any violation of the HEART Ordinance or any preceding animal ordinance
• Has never had any animal related permit revoked or suspended
• Has never failed to reclaim an animal from Animal Welfare
• Has not surrendered an animal within one year at the time of adoption
• Has never been convicted of child or domestic abuse. Parking
We suggest parking on the southwest side of Boot Barn at Coronado Mall. New pet adopters are not allowed to show off their new friends by walking through the mall. Leaving the mall with your pet is only allowed through the foyer at the south end of the Boot Barn entrance.

We love to see the shy dogs blossom especially when they get adopted. When Hachimura came to Lucky Paws he would not go outside or walk on his own. He was either carried or riding in a cart and then would walk back in. We all spent time with him and slowly he began to change into a charming pup! Then his people came to adopt him.

Hachimura now known as Jesse St James was adopted from Lucky Paws about 2 weeks ago and this is what his family shared:

Jesse St James is doing great!! We understood that the first few days would be transitional for him and for us (along with our current dog Krysten Jane), and yes he was very shy, he was wanting to be in essence alone and laying down. But these past few days, he has been up, he actually started jogging down the hallway, tail wagging, getting along with Krysten Jane, giving us kisses and wanting belly rubs. We have continued to give him his meds two times a day for breakfast/dinner as instructed and also been giving him carrots, non fat yogurt, strawberries, and green beans which he eats like theres no tomorrow. He now knows how to do the doggie door and we have left him and KJ alone free while we are at work, and when we come home there are no messes in the house. Hes doing great!! We took him to his new vet for a new patient, and she said hes doing great, needs to put on about 5lbs.

For Senior Sunday, we saved a special pup to introduce to you. Her name is Punkin and she is 14 years old. Punkin is young at heart with so much love to give. She is all about the treats and walks well on a leash too. What Punkin wants is nothing more than to retire in a home where she is treasured and cared for. Meet Zeenah, your future walking companion! ❤️🐾

Zeenah is a sweet, friendly girl who’s been with AWD since December and is a staff favorite at Lucky Paws. She loves giving and receiving love and has the cutest puppy eyes! Zeenah gets so excited when you put a harness on her and is amazing on walks, although she can be pretty determined when she sees a stick she wants to play with from far away. A training class or two would benefit Zeenah and she’s very treat motivated so she’d be an excellent student! Zeenah loves playing with other dogs but isn’t a great match with some dogs so if you have some of your own, please bring them with you for a meet and greet!

UPDATE: CINNAMON HAS BEEN ADOPTED!!
Hello Lucky Paws friends! We need you to help us out with a great big shout out far and wide (share, share, share). Our boy Cinnamon has been in the shelter since August 13, 2023 (he is the longest term dog in the AWD shelter). Although he is doing great and we all love him we really don’t want to see him spend another day here! Cinnamon is the goodest boy, he’s sweet, loves his walks, enjoys the company of humans and dogs (not sure about cats), and does great in his suite! Look who’s visiting Lucky Paws? It’s Reni a 1 yr old pitbull terrier mix. Reni is hoping he will find his forever home while visiting. This young pup is eager to learn and please, he knows sit and paw and would love to learn so much more! If you are interested in this boy he is located at our Eastside shelter at 8920 Lomas Blvd NE. An update from a Lucky Paws puppy adoption!

We adopted River - formerly United K - earlier this month from Lucky Paws. We stopped in on a whim and met her, her sister, and two brothers. We immediately found River to be our perfect match. We brought our kids back to meet her and decided she was the one for us.

Her personality blossomed the moment we brought her home. She's playful, clumsy, smart, and so very sweet. She's content to follow us around the house and watch us equally as much as she enjoys running and playing with us.

She charmed the vet yesterday with her mellow nature and has already learned how to sit! We really brought home the best puppy!

The two longest term dogs in our shelter were adopted this week! Both Khali and Larry have spent about 10 months waiting to be adopted! Well, not anymore! Happy tails beautiful babies!! Have a wonderful life!!

Meet Larry! This young boy is spunky and full of life! Larry has a “the glass is half full” personality and doesn’t let the fact that he has lived more than half his life in the shelter get to him. Pear has applied for the position as office assistant now that Whisper has been adopted! She still has many questions and has a hard time staying focused but for only 5 months old she checks in regularly, plays well, maintains a good work ethic, and is a team player!
