Like it or not, it's fireworks season!
While the scary fireworks of the 4th of July are too big of an issue for us to really get too in-depth here, we’d like to offer just a bit of quick advice for now.
For the adult dog who is maybe already afraid of fireworks/noises:
1. Provide as much exercise as is safely possible during all of the fireworks days. Add REALLY yummy chews, busy-work (check out our new “soothing saucer” puzzle toy that has a yummy liquid for them to work to get at), and use games throughout the day/night such as scavenger hunts of putting treats all over the house and yard for the dog to find.
2. Ask your vet for medication for your dog, before the 4th, if you feel your dog may need it. We also have a great list of natural calming tools that you may pick up at Dogland.
3. If you can’t go out of town and avoid the noise and chaos for your dog, find a safe spot in your house that the dog can be with you, ideally that is as quiet as possible. Use lots of noise from TVs or radios to help drown out some of the noise, then just be present with your dog and do your best to help them get through this scary time.
For the puppy, who this will be the first fireworks season for:
1. Do/use all of the points above mentioned for the adult dog.
2. Add: Fireworks-noise prep. Using an app such as Pupstanding, or fireworks sounds on youtube (such as: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0E4haJHYUJw), work on making REALLY fun things happen whenever the fireworks sounds are on. Games, meals, bones/chewies, puzzle toys, training, etc. and ensure that your puppy is having a fun time. Start low, then increase the volume, and practice daily.
If your dog or puppy needs further help, reach out to us for a private session asap. Good luck!
