Day 1 complete. I got to meet a podcast host that I've been listening to since she began her podcast, which was pretty neat. And we checked out a clinic taught by a trainer that I met and rode with years ago when I brought Lazz down here to Equine Affair. He was the one who made me rethink my training techniques and really got me into communicating and developing a partnership with my horse instead of just telling them what to do. It's been a pretty fun day!

No stirrup November is no problem for some! She regularly drops her irons on her own for parts of the lesson. Today we even trotted without stirrups.

It's No-Stirrup November! Do you/your barn participate? What are your favorite things to practice without stirrups? I'll admit, I generally hop on ba****ck rather than deal with crossing stirrups. Here in Vermont, it's a great time for ba****ck wanders through fields and woods! Yes,it's an old picture. No snow here yet. 🥶

Facebook often asks if people want to support a charity for their birthday. I was looking into this so I could support something related to Helene relief efforts and read that fb pays the donations at the beginning of the month, making any donations not accessible until the beginning of November! That's too long, so I donated directly to Moore Equine Feed & Pet Supply . I found them through 4Hooves Large Animal Services, a page I've been following for years. I've spoken with them directly before when Lazz was down in a tight space and they were able to give me ideas and ways to help him up. Moore's is one of the places they support donating too, along with a few others. For my birthday this year, considering donating to any Hurricane Relief programs. Every little bit helps!

Ollie was allowed to go on small walks and graze just before my wedding. I didn't want to risk an injury to him or I just prior to the wedding , so we just started on his outings. Last night was the first night (third outing) that he actually grazed. He's been so good living in an oversized stall all by himself. Some days I think I'm lucky that he's so good being alone, then I realize that it's a lot of work and time that I've put into Ollie that makes him comfortable being alone. This situation isn't ideal, and once he can have limited turnout, I'll bring him a friend, but for now I'll reap the benefits of encouraging confidence and curiosity.

We arrived at the show and unloaded, and got some lunging in just before a huge storm. After it cleared out, I was able to get a ride in, a bath, and now he's napping before I braid.

I've dealt with plenty of abcesses, but when Lazz is suddenly on 3 legs at grain time, when he was fine 20 min earlier, I assume the worst. After a vet call and lots of paring away, it's looking like a deep abscess. Of course it's on his good hind leg, his right hind. His left hind has been weaker and most of the reason why he had a hard time rising from his left side last summer. Today was the second soak, he's not a perfect patient, but it looks like he was able to lay down and rise on his own, so no need for checks ever 2 hours tonight!

ISO a horse for a client. The horse will live outside 24/7 with free access to a shelter and stalls available if needed. This horse should be around 15hands, 8-18ish years old, beginner friendly, sound without shoes and able to trail ride solo. The horse can be a mare or gelding, but must not be "marish" and needs to be able to live with a mare. Rider is an adult who began riding a couple years ago and is looking for a sane, quiet, gentle horse to enjoy easy walk/trot trail rides. Hoping to stay within a 2-3 hour drive of Northwest Vermont and under 5K. Please PM me with any leads or potential mounts. Thank you!

Last week I spent some time helping retrain Tiger to load. The last couple loads have been difficult, and haven't really been places to school. I can't load 2 videos, but he initially walked up to the ramp, paused, and quickly reversed. She gave him space and allowed him to back up to where he felt safe. After a few minutes of asking and rewarding every try, he walked right on! It's not about upping the pressure when they "aren't listening" or making the wrong thing hard and the right thing easy. It's about listening to them and asking politely. When the communication is respectful and goes both ways, good things happen. He went from no way to on and hanging out in about 10 minutes. I'll also note that I generally don't use rope halters. I keep one in my trailer, and we grabbed that. Trailer loading wasn't on the agenda & we didn't have another halter handy. My morning commute

I tried to do a live Instagram video on my way to a lesson this morning, but it failed. It ended up being a reel. 🤷🏻‍♀️ But, here's the video of my morning commute today and the really sketchy bridge.

Took a lesson out to the beach today. Lazz was a bit of a challenge. Didn't want to lead down to the beach, and when we headed home, he would not walk. Nerissa did very well with him, and didn't let him intimadate her. Whenever I think Lazz is getting older and needs to retire, I'll take him for a hack and see what he really does. 😂 Today it was his version of passage and collected canter. Never running off, but very high energy. 🐎 Meanwhile, Wyatt walked calmly beside/behind the fire breathing dragon the whole way home. 🦄 Did I mention this was my 5th ride on Wyatt and he's never been ridden to the beach? We had some issues with his balancing me thru the deep snow, but he tried really hard and stopped if he were confused. He really is a unicorn 🦄🦄🦄 By the way, how do people record and take pictures in the sunshine? Tell me your secret!
