More freezing temps and a chance of wintery weather are headed our way! ❄ Please keep in mind these animal winter safety tips to keep both our pets and wild neighbors safe.

All animals react differently to the cold, even if they’re considered “cold-weather” animals. Age, health, regular exposure to the cold and more can affect how an animal may experience health consequences in freezing temps.

▪️ At 32 degrees or less, ideally no dog or cat should be left outdoors.
▪️ If animals have to be outside, they should have access to a well-insulated structure with a wind block and heated water bowl to ensure access to fresh unfrozen water.
▪️ Use lots of straw to insulate the structure. Do not use blankets or any material bedding, as they soak up moisture from the air and the animal’s feet, which will make the animal colder.
▪️ If you’re concerned about an outdoor cat, consider making a weather-safe container from a cheap Styrofoam cooler, adding straw bedding and a hole for entry.
▪️ Shorten your dog's walk if the temps are freezing. Check out our boredom-busting enrichment videos for cheap ways to keep pets entertained indoors.
▪️ After walks, clean paw pads to prevent any chemical or melting agents from injuring your dog’s paws or being ingested.
▪️ Consider additional clothing – beyond the fur coat – for your animal. However, it should properly fit the pet, and pets should never be left unattended in clothing.
▪️ Watch for warning signs that an animal may be getting too cold, including shaking, sleepiness, slowed breathing, mobility, issues, dry skin, numbness or illness. Seek veterinary care ASAP if you see signs of numbness or illness.
▪️ Don’t forget about our wild animal neighbors. They may use parked vehicles for wind blocks. Make plenty of noise and give them time to make an exit before driving away.

Adoptable Mayo hopes you and your furry friends stay safe and warm!
