For those of you who choose to use dry foods, beware of expiration dates. Dry food is not immortal!

For those who’ve worked with me or have heard any of my lectures or webinars, you are aware of my concerns with using dry food exclusively. But a recent feline case reminded me that if you choose to use kibble, please know it does have an expiration date. Plus, without a few basic food safety

Having just returned from the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Assn annual conference full of healthful and healing ideas, it felt fitting to post this article I wrote a few years ago, but recently updated.

How often do you speak of the joy your companion animal has given you? Or boast of their commitment to you during tough times? In Traditional Chinese Medicine, joy is the emotion of the heart. For those of us with pets we understand that connection. We understand that once these companions enter our...

Did you know cats have underwritten rules of personal space and territories? Check out how an afternoon of fishing led to a blog post on feline codes of ethics on spatial resources within their living space.
https://terrigrow.com/what-do-cats-and-fishing-have-in-common/

What do cats and fishing have in common? Personal space and territories are just as important to dedicated anglers as they are to our cats. Yesterday, I played hooky to spend an afternoon with my husband kayak fishing in one of our neighborhood lakes. This lake draws anglers of all ages and skill le...

National Hairball Awareness Day! In honor, enjoy this podcast with Tazz Latifi, as we discuss how critical diet can be for hairball prevention and what therapies we’ve found beneficial (and one I’m reprimanded for) in managing hairballs. Just know while there is a lot of laughter and banter in this episode, trichobezars are no laughing matter.

https://terrigrow.com/do-lions-tigers-get-hairballs-podcast/

Do Lions & Tigers Get Hairballs? In the years I’ve worked with cats, I’ve curiously had limited cases and personal experiences with hairballs or formally trichobezars. So, when I agreed to talk about hairballs on a recent Petropolist podcast, I found I had more questions than answers. What are h...

There truly is a social media holiday for just about everything, and your pets will appreciate this one - ! 🦴

When selecting a treat for your companion look for quality ingredients just as you would for their diet, especially organic and/or humanely-raised meats. While your dog can enjoy vegetarian or meat-based treats, remember both have calories and should be limited to 10% of your dog’s daily food intake. Or if you’re in the mood to cook up a homemade treat, I’ve got recipes on my blog. Check out this one for lamb veggie dog biscuits with a little something special for cats, too!

Did you know the type of dish can influence your cat’s eating behaviors? Deep bowls block their peripheral vision. A small bowl may trigger whisker fatigue or prevent easy access to the food. My recommendations are bowls that are approximately 6” wide with a low edge in glass, ceramic, bamboo, or stainless steel. Some cats prefer even larger platter styles. Some find reflective dish surfaces or the noise from tags/collars threatening. The same goes for water bowls.

Here’s an eco-friendly option your cat may appreciate:

National Cat Health Month | Activities, both mental and physical, are critical for your cat’s health and well-being.

Use playtime to mimic hunting behaviors and to encourage mental stimulation. Chasing after treats, walking on a leash, or maneuvering through a homemade obstacle course will get your cat moving and protect lean muscle mass. Need ideas to improve your cat’s activity level?

Here are two blog posts from my friend and feline behavior consultant, Jennifer Van de Kieft, to get you started:

| Webinar January 19, 2022
Pet obesity is considered an epidemic disease with serious health threats affecting nearly 60% of cats and decreasing their quality of life and lifespan. Are you, like the majority of pet owners, overwhelmed with pet food choices and conflicting dietary/nutritional recommendations? Did you know many foods and feeding protocols set your cat up for weight gain, and that the gain of 1 lb is huge in a cat’s life? Make weight management part of your pet’s health and wellness plan and save the date to attend my webinar presented by CIVT on January 19, 2022.

International Day of Veterinary Medicine —
Many of us are closer to our veterinarians than our own primary care doctors, and today is the day we honor them and their care of our furry companions. If you haven’t already included your veterinarian’s office on your holiday card or gift list, I encourage you to remember them this year.

And I want to give a special shout-out to my friends at Veterinary Holistic Center in Northern Virginia – doing awesome work in comprehensive, integrative therapies.

It’s National Cat Lovers’ Month and time to celebrate you and your purr-fect companion. ❤ 🐈‍⬛

Here are 3 ideas for some bonding time…
1) Pamper your pet – do a little extra brushing and snuggling on these chilly winter nights.

2) Make a meal – cook a special treat for your furry feline. If this is new to you, I’ve got recipes on the blog.

3) Commemorate your connection – your camera-shy kitty may not tolerate a professional photo session, but at least take some selfies. We’d love to see them too, so be sure to post below!

Sure, I'm excited about turkey and dressing tomorrow, but my favorite part of is the dogs!

It's the big show. The Kennel Club of Philadelphia's National Dog Show was held this weekend in Oaks, Pennsylvania, and will be broadcast on NBC Thursday, November 25 from Noon till 2:00 PM in all time zones.

If you think your own beautiful boy or girl belongs on the runway in one of the seven judged groups (Toy Group, Terrier Group, Working Group, Sporting Group, Hound Group, Non-Sporting Group, and Herding Group), we'd love to see your favorite photos.

** Edited - oops!
Thanks to the friend that told me I have it backward. We gain an hour this time. 👏 Still hard on the kitties, but I'll take it! **

Don't forget to reset the clock on your coffee maker - you'll need it an hour earlier tomorrow! Yep, it's that time of year when we lose an hour of sleep and spend the next month explaining to our cats why their meals aren't on their schedule.

(Tell me again why we still do this?)

November is . Clinical signs of diabetes in cats can be, among others: excessive thirst and/or urination, weight loss, increased hunger, weakness, lethargy and poor skin condition. Just like with their humans, the sooner it is diagnosed, the sooner it can be treated. A cat with diabetes actually was one of the reasons that forged my path in founding PetSage. I have since consulted and blogged extensively on proper pet diet to enhance wellness and avoid illnesses (diabetes among them) which are linked to diet induced inflammation. Want to learn more? Save the Date on Jan. 19 for my webinar. Learn what is a healthy weight and how additional weight affects your cat’s quality of life and longevity.
