When selecting a treat for your companion look for quality ingredients just as you would for their diet, especially organic and/or humanely-raised meats. While your dog can enjoy vegetarian or meat-based treats, remember both have calories and should be limited to 10% of your dog’s daily food intake. With Valentine’s Day and Love Your Pet Day this week, it’s a great occasion to get a special treat for your furry friend. ❤

Did you know the type of dish can influence your cat’s eating behaviors? Deep bowls block their peripheral vision. A small bowl may trigger whisker fatigue or prevent easy access to the food. My recommendations are bowls that are approximately 6” wide with a low edge in glass, ceramic, bamboo, or stainless steel. Some cats prefer even larger platter styles. Some find reflective dish surfaces or the noise from tags/collars threatening. The same goes for water bowls.

National Cat Health Month | Activities, both mental and physical, are critical for your cat’s health and well-being.

Use playtime to mimic hunting behaviors and to encourage mental stimulation. Chasing after treats, walking on a leash, or maneuvering through a homemade obstacle course will get your cat moving and protect lean muscle mass. Need ideas to improve your cat’s activity level?

International Day of Veterinary Medicine —
Many of us are closer to our veterinarians than our own primary care doctors, and today is the day we honor them and their care of our furry companions. If you haven’t already included your veterinarian’s office on your holiday card or gift list, I encourage you to remember them this year.

And I want to give a special shout-out to my friends at Veterinary Holistic Center in Northern Virginia – doing awesome work in comprehensive, integrative therapies.

Sure, I'm excited about turkey and dressing tomorrow, but my favorite part of is the dogs!

It's the big show. The Kennel Club of Philadelphia's National Dog Show was held this weekend in Oaks, Pennsylvania, and will be broadcast on NBC Thursday, November 25 from Noon till 2:00 PM in all time zones.

If you think your own beautiful boy or girl belongs on the runway in one of the seven judged groups (Toy Group, Terrier Group, Working Group, Sporting Group, Hound Group, Non-Sporting Group, and Herding Group), we'd love to see your favorite photos.

Thanks to the friend that told me I have it backward. We gain an hour this time. 👏 Still hard on the kitties, but I'll take it! **

Don't forget to reset the clock on your coffee maker - you'll need it an hour earlier tomorrow! Yep, it's that time of year when we lose an hour of sleep and spend the next month explaining to our cats why their meals aren't on their schedule.

November is . Clinical signs of diabetes in cats can be, among others: excessive thirst and/or urination, weight loss, increased hunger, weakness, lethargy and poor skin condition. Just like with their humans, the sooner it is diagnosed, the sooner it can be treated. A cat with diabetes actually was one of the reasons that forged my path in founding PetSage. I have since consulted and blogged extensively on proper pet diet to enhance wellness and avoid illnesses (diabetes among them) which are linked to diet induced inflammation. Want to learn more?
