VET TECH WEEK 🌟 let’s never forget the hard work of our unlicensed nurses! Some have gone to the extra schooling or are in the process of it now, some are kind of new are have exceeded expectations for on-the-job training, and some have years of clinical experience. Many have had experience in multiple positions within the clinic (like worked at the front desk, or had roles at other jobs). These nurses deserve a special shout-out!! They made the world go ‘round! im so sorry if I’ve missed anyone!! You are all soooo important to me!!!! XOXO

VET TECH WEEK lets us remember that our nurses are often the first and last person to handle your pet. They’re their fiercest advocates, your communicator, and the metronome of the clinic. If you have time, make sure to thank your veterinary nurses! They go through a lot to get where they are: client-facing, pet-cuddling, and the medically-sound advisors they are.

VET TECH WEEK is only a week, but from the depths of my heart I hope these nurses know what they mean to me and the others they help. What a wonderful world we live in where people will dedicate their entire careers, days, nights, and off-the-clock emotional and brain space to these pets.

VET TECH WEEK continues! Did you know that not only are vet techs licensed nurses who have completed rigorous classes and exams, but some have specialty certifications? Licensed vet techs (LVTs) can work even more, publish research, pass more tests, and become a Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) in a number of areas. This is a higher level of recognition for advanced knowledge and skills in a specific discipline per the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA). You may find some of our specialty nurses offering services of physical rehabilitation, like Ashleigh here.

VET TECH WEEK Would you rather be itty bitty teenie we**ie and be uplifted by the squeals of your admirers, or be the biggest one in the history of the world and need four nurses on their strongest day to pick up your body?!

VET TECH WEEK is a time to highlight the simple, enduring love our nurses have for their patients. Whether it’s taking X-rays, drawing blood, placing IVs, administering meds via every route imaginable [YUP!!], these nurses do it with compassion and care oozing from their eyeballs. Can you imagine having your hand held and being comforted by the same nurse expertly making sure your booboos will heal?! They’re amazing!! It’s like every single patient who comes through our door is gifted with a team of whose “only” job is to literally do all the things.

VET TECH WEEK continues with a brief discussion on 💞Sometimes the task is “just a nail trim” 💅🏽… but we all know how that goes 😆. Our nurses love all the patients, in all shapes and sizes, with the variety of needs (ranging from “nail trim with song” to full sedation!!), and the goal is always the same: comfort and care. If your pet needs sedation for nails, please know that so do most of ours 😂!! [LOOKING AT YOU, WAYNE!!!]

VET TECH WEEK is upon us! We love celebrating our nurses to not only attempt to make them feel as appreciated as they deserve to, but also to showcase what a licensed veterinary nurse is! We have a unique opportunity at EMMAvet to help both Primary Care patients as well as Urgent Care cases. You may not realize, but those worlds are vastly different. There aren’t many “double pet appointments” on urgent care! (There are times: someone ate all the chocolate but who?! This pet is here for moral support! And sometimes sibling rivalry.) What I love most about this photo is neither pupper seems to know who is getting blood drawn! Eight legs on a table seems like the right amount of legs.

WORLD RABIES DAY is today, September 28th. There are different sources of infection, but dogs and bats remain the biggest sources of infection for humans.

Rabies is a vaccine-preventable, zoonotic, viral disease affecting the central nervous system. In up to 99% of the human rabies cases, dogs are responsible for virus transmission. Children between the age of 5 and 14 years are frequent victims.

Rabies infects mammals, including dogs, cats, livestock and wildlife.

Rabies spreads to people and animals via saliva, usually through bites, scratches, or direct contact with mucosa (e.g. eyes, mouth, or open wounds). Once clinical symptoms appear, rabies is virtually 100% fatal.

The global cost of rabies is estimated to be around US$ 8.6 billion per year including lost lives and livelihoods, medical care and associated costs, as well as uncalculated psychological trauma.

Rabies is present on all continents except Antarctica. Globally there are an estimated 59 000 deaths from rabies annually; however, due to underreporting, documented case numbers often differ from the estimate.

Rabies, a neglected tropical diseases (NTD), predominantly affecting marginalized populations. Although effective human vaccines and immunoglobulins exist for rabies, these are often inaccessible or unaffordable to those in need.

As of 2018, the average estimated cost of rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) was US$ 108 (along with travel costs and loss of income), which can be a financial burden on those earning US$ 1–2 per person, daily.

Over 29 million people worldwide receive human rabies vaccine annually. https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/rabies

EMMAvet’s Story

EMMAvet’s team members have backgrounds in Emergency and Specialty Medicine, where they treated dogs and cats in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Dr. Jarvinen realized that many of the patients she saw in the Emergency Room did not necessarily need an ICU. The owners and pets were spending a long time waiting to see a doctor for presenting complaints like a suspected urinary tract infection, squinting eye, diarrhea, vomiting, skin lesions, ear infections, and others. In human medicine, a model already existed for people to see a doctor either outside of normal physician office hours, or when their physicians were unable to get them in right away: urgent care. Following this model, with on-site diagnostics (laboratory, x-ray, ECG, ultrasound), Dr. Jarvinen created EMMAvet – veterinary urgent care. With a team of specialty-trained veterinarians, technicians, and client service representatives, EMMAvet is able to offer gold-standard care that dogs and cats would get in the ER, but with a shorter wait time and less expense. No appointments – walk-ins only.

EMMAvet’s team is passionate about patient care. They took medicine to the next level by making everything digital and paperless. Cash-free. The doctors and technicians work with the best tools available. This means that when the doctors are looking at cytology (cells on a slide under a microscope), they can actually take a picture of it and show you exactly what they are looking at. Ultrasound can be performed in the exam room with you. Through windows behind the front desk, you can watch the technicians run blood work and urine tests. You will be a part of the process, and the EMMAvet team will make your dog or cat their priority.

If your dog or cat happens to need additional treatment, EMMAvet’s team will stabilize for transfer to a 24-hr facility.
