Cooperative care encourages animals to be an active, willing participant in husbandry and handling experiences. Giving our animals some control can make necessary veterinary exams or procedures, grooming, or handling much less stressful and reduces the need for the animal to be physically or chemically restrained to provide them health care. For example, to get the otters comfortable with a future injection, the keepers practice a duration target behavior while touching him with a syringe.
While close contact between zoo keepers and animals is very limited and strictly managed, keepers do share space with the emus. Keepers work to create bonds with Burt & Ellie to help facilitate cooperative care by desensitizing them to touch.
Zookeepers work with Bebu the jaguar and other animals on a series of behaviors that will encourage their participation in necessary exams or procedures without requiring physical or chemical restraint. This helps reduce stress on the animals as they become willing participants in their own health care.
