Steve and I have been talking about retirement for several years just like everyone else our age. We bought a place on Lake Limestone three years ago. The more time we spend there, the more we realize that we want to live there full-time. Over the years, several people have expressed an interest in buying the bees and equipment, but did not want to move here. We have always said that we want someone to live here and continue to do what we do. We want someone to continue to provide local honey for the community. That’s very important to us! Someone to love this small patch of land (we’ve called home for 35 years) like we do!

We’ve never really tried very hard to find that perfect buyer. A few things had to be in place first. I wasn’t yet at retirement age and there was always the question of what would happen to Steve’s mother? We couldn’t leave until she was settled in a safe place. A chance meeting with a young man started talk of retirement again. Over the past year, Steve has been mentoring this young man. We threw everything at him that we could think of, but he kept coming back! If the drought and heat didn’t deter him, then maybe he is cut out for this work after-all. You never know, he could have got one bee sting, high tailed it and never looked back! But he didn’t.

So it is official now! We are retiring at the end of the year! Moving to Lake Limestone and taking Steve’s mom, Margie with us. Courtney and Sean Schimelpfening will be the new owners of Coplin Bee Farm! It is time to let a new generation take over. We are anxious to see the great things they will do with the place! I hope you all will support them the way you have supported us! They plan to carry on just as we did. WILD HONEY will still be available at the same stores. If you get your honey here at the farm, you will still be able to do that.

It’s a BIG change for us! And even BIGGER changes for Sean and Courtney. They got married, bought a honey farm and will have their first child all within a year! WOW!

Steve will still travel back and forth for a while to work with Sean. My family and friends are here so I can’t stay away long!

Thank you for everything,

Steve and Joan

Examining Einstein's Warning

Albert Einstein, one of the greatest scientific minds in history, once allegedly warned that if bees were to disappear from the Earth, humanity would follow suit within four years. This quote has stirred concern and debate over the years, highlighting the crucial role that bees play in pollinating plants and ensuring our food supply. In this article, we will explore the logic behind Einstein's warning, whether it is true, and the importance of protecting bees.

That sums it up!

Illustration by 🐝🐝🐝 / Honey is bees food, and that’s why I’m very cautious how much I take from them, if any. So, I only dare to have very small batches of that delicious liquid… and I cherish that a lot. Love this illustration, made by for some time ago.

We are thankful for all of you who have supported us for so many years! ❤️ 🐝Steve and Joan

Honey bees naturally make their honeycomb cells in a hexagon shape. The reason they do this is because they need to efficiently use the space in the hive and hexagons fit together perfectly when side by side. In addition, these hexagon cells hold the maximum amount of honey while also using as little wax as possible compared to other shapes. The honeycomb cells are also slanted so that the nectar and honey stored in them does not run out and make a mess in the hive. It is truly amazing how intelligent these insects are!
