Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Update
Poultry Outside
Since highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was first detected in Michigan in February 2022, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) has been working diligently with local, state, and federal partners to respond, investigate, and protect domestic animals from this virus.

HPAI has been found in the state’s wildlife, domestic poultry, and dairy cattle. In addition, both feral and domestic cats have tested positive for the disease. However, most cats diagnosed with HPAI are owned by individuals who work on affected premises or farms.

🚨 MDARD Confirms First Case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) for 2024 in Michigan 🚨

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) has reported the first case of EEE in a domestic animal for 2024. An unvaccinated Standardbred filly in Van Buren County has tested positive. This serves as a critical reminder for all Michiganders to take steps to protect themselves and their animals from mosquito bites.

🦟 Protect your animals and yourself:

Vaccinate horses against EEE, West Nile Virus (WNV), and other mosquito-borne diseases.
Eliminate standing water where mosquitoes can breed.
Use insect repellent on animals approved for their species.
Avoid peak mosquito activity from dusk to dawn by keeping livestock in barns and pets inside.
Remember, it only takes one bite from an infected mosquito to cause serious illness. Stay safe and take preventive measures!

For more information on how to protect yourself and your animals, visit www.michigan.gov/EEE.

🛟 According to the most recent U.S. Coast Guard statistics, 75% of boating deaths are due to drowning, and 87% of those victims were not wearing a life jacket.

This summer, we have partnered with McDonald’s of Michigan to encourage young boaters to wear their life jacket. Kids spotted by conservation officers appropriately wearing their life jacket while boating, have the chance to receive a coupon valid for a free McDonald’s ice cream or apple slice pack (valid at participating McDonald’s locations).

Please encourage your friends and family to wear life jackets when out on the water so everyone can have fun, but most importantly, return to shore safely.
