Ten years ago today, we opened our metaphorical doors and started to serve patients in the Allegan County area. When I first started the practice out of my house I had no idea how it would develop. Today, I am joined on the road by the talented Drs. Roxanne and Maggie and helping us are four awesome assistants/receptionists Rylee, Bri, Holly and Olivia. We recently formed a partnership with Monterey Veterinary Center and we are excited to see how that develops over time.

I am grateful for my family, staff and our clients for all of your support over these past years. We have grown a lot together caring for our important patients and can't wait to see where the next ten years takes us. With sincere appreciation, THANK YOU!

We were recently notified that there was a bat that tested positive for rabies in Allegan County last week. Also, in the past few months there were two cats that tested positive to rabies on the east side of the state. This is a good reminder to have all of your pets (including cats and horses) vaccinated for rabies to make sure that if they are exposed they do not get sick.

If you think that you have been bitten, scratched or exposed by a bat please contact the Allegan County Health Department.

Happy Halloween from Pickle Street Veterinary Services!
We know that many of our clients take their dogs along for trick or treating. Just as we check our candy for our kids, we also need to ensure that our pets do not help themselves to it. The most important thing to watch for aside from chocolate is Xylitol.

Xylitol is a sugar substitute commonly used in many foods and candy. It is important to always read the ingredients list to ensure that Xylitol is not in the product.

Xylitol is dangerous because in pets, especially dogs, they can get very low blood sugar within 30 minutes of ingestion. This can be deadly if not treated immediately. 1 stick of sugarless gum can cause poisoning in small dogs. Dogs who ingest a large amount are at a high risk of liver failure and death.
Signs to look for include:
• Vomiting
• Weakness
• Lethargy
• Depression
• Difficulty Standing
• Incoordination
• Tremors
• Yellowing of the skin or mucous membrane/Jaundice
• Collapse
• Seizures
• Coma

It is critical to get emergency veterinary care if you suspect ingestion of Xylitol.

Please help us welcome Dr Maggie Pratt!!

Monterey Veterinary Center and Picklestreet Veterinary Services are thrilled to welcome our new Associate Veterinarian Dr. Maggie Pratt! Maggie grew up in Houston, Texas where she was heavily involved in her FFA chapter. She raised and showed Red Brangus and American Aberdeen cattle, as well as Boer goats. With her parents, Maggie started and managed their family cattle herd, focusing on genetics and meat quality. She received her undergraduate degree in Animal and Dairy Science’s at Mississippi State University (Hail State!) and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at St. George’s University. She enjoys all things cattle, surgery, and has a special interest in perusing advanced reproduction methods such as embryo transfer and IVF. In her free time Maggie likes to read, watch Mississippi State baseball, and try new restaurants. She is moving to Michigan with her husband, Shawn, and her dog, Lu Ann.

Maggie will be joining our team the week of July 5th. With Maggie's help we will be able to increase our surgical schedule, see more appointments, and once again be available for urgent care. We can't wait for everyone to meet her!
