LEASH WALKING 101. If you want your dog to stop pulling you on walks, try this walking drill instead of your normal walking route!
Play tip incoming! 👇🏼
If your dog won’t bring the ball back when you throw it, try this next time you go out to play:
1. Have their leash on (a 15-20’ leash is nice for this)
2. Grab the end of the leash, start with shorter tosses, and as soon as they grab the ball, start backpedaling while reeling them in with the leash
3. Don’t always grab the toy from them right away… sometimes as they come back to you, just hang out and give them some love while they keep the ball!
4. Repeat and slowly increase distance and work towards letting the leash drag until you don’t need it anymore.

Most people have accidentally taught their dog that if they just pull harder on the leash, they’ll get what they want. If this is happening day in and day out on every walk you take, your dog is just getting constant reinforcement of that behavior and is likely to continue doing it, which can lead to worse behaviors as well.
Try changing the direction you’re going and become more unpredictable and engaging to your dog.
Backpedaling is one of many options!
