It’s the end of our mini staycation! It’s been so nice to just hang out with the pups. This afternoon they got destruction boxes with toys and treats! The boys loved it but opening the closed box proved a little too hard for Lili!
Bella plays with puzzles
Bella is a former puppy mill dog. She is in a loving home now but needs help building confidence. We are using puzzles to help her acclimate to sudden environmental change via the noise and movement of these puzzles. What a brave girl!!
Rally Advanced
Today was the last day of our Rally league. Besides adding his own flare here and there, and one ring escape, Digby did great! We also received 2 first and 1 second placement overall!
We put out our water fountain, yay! BUT Miss Lil seems to be going through a secondary fear period right now. Things that didn’t bother her, make her very startled right now. Novel objects, loud noises or fast movements all get a jump scare out of this girl.
Fear periods are totally normal. Puppies go through them many times throughout their puppyhood, with the last one happening in late adolescence, around 18 months. Fear periods are an evolutionary response that keep puppies cautious to their surroundings so they can stay safe.
If you noticed your puppy suddenly being afraid, it’s ok. Support them through it with love, cuddles, and treats for being brave! These periods usually let only a couple of weeks.
One word of caution. If your dog is going through a fear period, it is best to avoid potentially triggering situations during that time. If something really scary happens during this sensitive period, it could have a lasting effect through adulthood. So cut back on socializing for those couple of weeks and return when your dog’s behavior goes back to “normal.”
