I'm looking for a dog who needs a home that would enjoy being a service dog!

I've been to several rescues on multiple visits and it is not an easy task finding the right dog.

As a starting point I do not accept dogs with extreme behavior issues such as uncontrolled barking at dogs or people, or uncontrolled destructive separation anxiety.

My job is to find the dogs that will ENJOY service work because dogs who enjoy it are dogs who are good at it.

Some of the criteria that my client is looking for:

A dog between the ages of 1 and 3

Short coat breed

Around 30-40lbs.

Must not make high-pitched sounds regularly.

Dog must show strong empathy and comfort behaviors when seeing a person in distress.

Dog must not be a barker. Dog needs good elbows and hips for mobility work.

Dog has strong physical persistence. Must be content to sit with a person for long periods of time.

If you are looking for your dog to live under the care of a professional, positive reinforcement dog trainer, you can reply here, send me a message, or an email at [email protected]

Best,

Caitlin

Athena is looking for a home!

8 month old
Catahoula and Boxer mix

I evaluated her for potential service dog work today and she would not enjoy being a service dog.

Some things I noted during her assessment:

- She has a good nose but isn't very persistent with scent. Gets easily distracted.

- Low handler focus but does show promise to respond to some human emotions while in a home environment. Beyond that is unlikely.

- Is more likely to mildly pull back in unfamiliar situations.

- Quick recovery time from mildly stressful situations. Doesn't stay fixated for long.

- Relatively easy to redirect. Though difficult to maintain attention.

- She loves squeaky toys. I did not test her toy drive during the assessment. Her focus may improve around toys.

She's been bounced around the last couple of days after escaping her owner's backyard and the owner not wanting her back. Here is what her current gaurdian has to say about her.

"She was locked outside and kept on a small padio most of the day/night. I would hear her whine and bark. While she was with me for the day I put her in a crate. She was scared to go in it but when she was she whined for maybe a minute it two then laid down and took a nap.

She was then rehomed to a friend, but now their landlord changed their mind about having a dog.

She's great with other dogs, she doesn't mind cats, she loves kids. However she's not fully potty trained and needs shots.

Her energy is level is moderate to low. She plays then naps and repeat. She was never given a toy she has no clue what a ball is. She sleeps all night."

I will not be responding to requests to see the dog.

Welcome to your first day of Day Training Nash!

As you can see, Nash has already mastered the art of the head tilt.

Nash is here during the day and back at home the rest of the night.

If a board and train isn't right for you, perhaps our day training is the right fit?

Adding a new furry family member into your home is an exciting time.

But if you're a busy family it can also be quite overwhelming!

I recently visited a home that actually had a very calm life but the puppy was showing extreme biting behaviors and couldn't sleep or settle. The vet had also mentioned about keeping an eye on the puppy's knees as they grew up.

This was a huge red flag to me. Sometimes training is not the option and we need to address underlying pain first.

Puppies can be born broken. This is why it is so important to ask for elbows, hips and other health paperwork before bringing our animals home.

Let's support the breeders who do a good job of bringing healthy and pain free puppies into the world.

What are/was your biggest puppy struggle?

WHY I DO WHAT I DO

Too many dog trainers cause more harm than good. No training regulation, lack of education requirements, and “knowing enough” to make them dangerous.

This is a problem because I see client after client coming to me with an obedient dog that knows sit, stay, come, and heel, but now “suddenly” has behavior problems. Things such as submissive peeing, aggression, fear, and excessive lethargy. It’s like the dog’s soul has been removed.
