Featured Breed | The Khao Manee

This month we're talking about cats that are new to CFA and still in the process of advancing to Championship status. The Khao Manee, known as the "White Gem", is one of the ancient breeds originating from Thailand!

The Khao Manee is a pure, glistening white cat with a luminous, vibrant eye color. The jewel-like eyes can be any shade of blue, green, gold, or odd. They are devoted to their owners and are curious, intelligent cats with an enduring sense of naughtiness.

What happens after a litter of kittens is born?

Well, other than all the hard work that went into the process before (and after, because raising kittens is a lot of work!), there's a step shortly after they're born where the breeder will register the litter.

Registering the litter is how the kittens get into the system so that when they're placed, they can do so with all their appropriate paperwork.

Did you know that for litters registered within 4 months of the birth date, the early bird litter registration fee will apply; after 4 months, the regular fee will apply. So register your litter sooner rather than later!

Can a breed be fast-tracked?

This question has come up a lot this month, especially when discussing breeds that are already well-established in other registering bodies, and it's a double-edged sword. Of course, breeders want to advance as quickly as possible and fans of the breed want to see them compete, but the process of advancing through Miscellaneous and Provisional, prior to competing in Championship, does a lot to set the breed up for success within CFA.

The Miscellaneous category is the best opportunity to discuss the breed with judges and hear their input directly (about how the cats meet the standard). This is when they have the opportunity to work on the standard as well as utilize their cats to help illustrate those standards to the judges. Exhibitors don't get that kind of opportunity at other levels of competition, so this is really the only time that they can work with the judging program to make sure what they've outlined is exactly the ideal cat they want to produce as a breed and that the judges understand that vision as well.

The Provisional category is ideal for exhibitors who want to see how examples of their breed compare to others of the same breed and get feedback via hanging ribbons. This is when they get to see that finalized standard that they worked on in the Miscellaneous category actually in action!

Remember that the best way for a breed to advance is for breeders and exhibitors to demonstrate that readiness through their participation in the process. That means having a standard in place that doesn't constantly change, making an effort to get cats to shows (and not just the same cat to multiple shows, judges need to see multiple examples of the breed), as well as joining the breed committee and eventually the breed council.

My Cat Monday |

Meet Morgoth of Krynn, the Destroyer!

"She is the sweetest and bravest cat in the multiverse. She is always next to you to be the project manager of whatever you are doing. Once she gives her stamp of approval, she will block your project to demand the loves and attentions she deserves. If you want her to stay out of it, don’t give her access to it because she will be in the middle of it. Always. She is so quirky and loveable. Her sisters are her constant entertainment but she wants to be the main show. And she is."

CFA Sanctioned Breeds | The Pathway to Recognition: Provisional Class

When a new breed wants to be recognized in CFA, they have to go through a process to do so.

Entering the Provisional class requires there to be 25 active breeders who are working with the breed and sign an application indicating such. They must meet all the requirements for the Miscellaneous class, as well as, have at least one CFA breed club, a cutoff date for breeds allowed in the background ancestry, and sufficient facts/data to demonstrate the potential value to the fancy of the proposed breed (and differences from existing recognized breeds)!

It's also important to have at least 100 cats of the breed registered and it's important for the definitive standard to be presented along with a list of acceptable colors for Provisional show status.

Once they've got all their paperwork in order, it can be submitted to the Executive Board for approval! If approved they can then start showing in the Provisional Class, where judges will start ranking them in breed against other examples of the breed - though they are still not eligible for finals in this class.
