April is heartworm awareness month! 🦟
What you see is a video of microfilaria (baby heartworms) swimming through a blood sample under the microscope.
Unfortunately, we have had quite a few patients come up positive recently.
Heartworm disease is a nasty PREVENTABLE disease that can affect many mammals including dogs, cats, ferrets, coyotes, sea lions, and many more. 🐺
Because there are animals in the wild that can harbor heartworms, it is incredibly important to keep your pet on year round prevention. All it takes is one bite to transmit this deadly disease. Even indoor pets and pets that live in areas that cool down are at risk and need protection year round.
Heartworm disease can lead to heart and lung damage and, left untreated, even death.
Thankfully for dogs there is a treatment option, although very expensive and takes almost a year to complete with activity restrictions the entire time.
Unfortunately for our feline friends, there is currently no treatment option for cats. If they get heartworm disease they will have them until they die off which takes years.
Make sure your pet is up to date on their heartworm test and ensure you have prevention to keep them safe! Call the clinic today! 📞🐾

Can anyone guess what these little guys are!?
It is with a heavy heart that we make this announcement. 💔
We currently have several patients undergoing treatment for heartworm disease.
Just this last week, we have diagnosed two more patients with this potentially fatal and completely preventable disease. While there is a treatment, it is never guaranteed a patient can withstand the rigorous treatment, and the damage caused to the heart and lungs by the parasitic infection leaves a lasting impact.
Dogs travel from all over and while our climate here is different, there are growing concerns in the southern parts of the US that some new strains are becoming resistant. When animals travel, so do some of these diseases and parasites.
Heartworm is spread by mosquitos, and while they typically aren’t out in the winter months, heartworm prevention can only kill certain stages of the disease so stopping prevention in the winter can put your pet in danger. We are working to keep bringing awareness to our clients and community, but we need help! Please share and spread the word. The more we work together, the more pets we can protect. ❤️

Merry Christmas from our team to you and your fur babies at home! We hope that whatever you may celebrate this season, that it is filled with family and great memories. ❤️
We are off today and enjoying time with our families, but are grateful for those at our emergency clinics for hanging in there today for all your pet emergencies. Remember, carrots and green beans are an okay yummy treat, but keep the goodies away from your pups and avoid a pancreatitis hospital visit! 🐾 We cannot wait to see you all again on Monday!
It's Labor Day! Just a reminder, our office will be closed today, and will resume normal hours tomorrow! For any pet related emergencies, please refer to The Greater Lansing Veterinary Center, MSU, or Great Lakes Pet Emergency. We hope you all enjoy your Monday!
Let's talk about those pesky mosquitos! Did you know that our Doctors as well as the American Heartworm Association recommend year round heartworm prevention?
You may not be able to see this ravenous parasite, but it can wreak havoc on your furry loved ones, and cause irreparable and sometimes untreatable damage.
