Our team had a fun outing yesterday, building signs and charcuterie boards and bonding over our art skills. So fun to get away from the clinic for some fun and laughs and walking away with some tangible memories. Thanks AR Workshop for hosting us!

Salmon/trout from Northern California to British Columbia can carry a fatal infection for dogs. Read more about salmon poisoning here:

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has reported that several dogs were sickened by salmon poisoning in the Newport area. Salmon poisoning disease (fish disease) is a potentially fatal condition seen in dogs who have ingested certain types of raw fish found in the Pacific Northwest from San Francisco to the coast of Alaska. It is most prevalent from northern California to the Puget Sound. It is also seen inland along the rivers of fish migration.

Salmon, trout, and other fish such as the lamprey, sculpin, redside shiner, shad, sturgeon, candlefish and the large-scale sucker who spend their lives in coastal streams and rivers in the Pacific Northwest can be infected with the organism Neorickettsia helmonthoeca.

Symptoms To Watch For
If not treated, salmon poisoning disease is usually fatal within 2 weeks after exposure. The symptoms of salmon poisoning disease are similar to other gastrointestinal diseases such as canine parvovirus. If infected, your dog would likely show some or all of the following symptoms about 6 to 10 days after ingesting fish which were carrying the bacteria. Symptoms may be of variable severity but generally consist of:
* Fever, often greater than 104 F
* Depression
* Anorexia
* Vomiting
* Diarrhea
* Nasal or eye discharge
* Weight loss

If you know your dog has ingested raw fish and it exhibits any of the symptoms listed above, notify your veterinarian immediately. If identified in time, salmon poisoning disease is treatable. A helpful part of the diagnosis is telling your veterinarian that your dog ate raw fish, even if you only suspect that may be the case.

Prevention
* Control what your dog eats while on fishing trips.
* Leash your dog at the beach or river so that you can monitor its activities.
* Wrap garbage, especially fish entrails, and dispose in well-secured cans.
* Don't feed raw fish to your dog. Cook fish thoroughly or deep-freeze it for a minimum of 2 weeks to destroy the parasite before feeding it to your dog.

We are excited to welcome Dr. Ishan Korgaonkar to our team! Dr. Korgaonkar graduated from Bombay Veterinary College, India in 2013 and finished his master's degree in Veterinary Pharmacology in 2015. He has over a decade of experience in small animal medicine and surgery in India, Mauritius, and Malawi. He is passionate about small animal surgery and shelter medicine. He excels in wound reconstructions and soft tissue surgery. Being well travelled and having veterinary experience in many walks of life, he hopes to expand his skills here at ADCH. In his free time, he loves trekking, swimming, photography, and just being outside. Dr Korgaonkar and his wife (who is also a vet!) have a crazy, nervous, sweet brindle rescue dog named Leiah and a happy and hyper rescue dog back in India named Cleo who will hopefully join them soon. Please help us welcome him at Aloha Dog and Cat!

Holiday season is fun but can be stressful to the less social pets in the household. Setting up a safe space for them can help any time of year, but especially during this busy time of year.

We know holidays can be both a ton of fun and maybe a smidge stressful for us humans. Many pets struggle with the rowdiness that can come with visiting and hosting too.

Zen Dens are separate spaces (behind closed doors or gates) we can create for our pets when they need some time to themselves to settle and relax, so everyone can enjoy themselves!

Both cats and dogs can benefit from having their own Zen Den, and it doesn't have to only be used during the holidays.

To create the Zen Den of your pet's dreams, here's some things to include:
⭐️Enrichment toys (snuffle mats, puzzle toys, lick mats, stuffed frozen toys, etc)
⭐️Your pet's favorite bed or resting area setup
⭐️Noise-buffering music, soothing music
⭐️Rules for guests- the Zen Den is for your pet only unless you as the owner pop in to check on them
⭐️Any other items your pet enjoys or finds comforting

Infectious Canine Respiratory Virus
We've been getting several calls in regard to the infectious respiratory virus that has been in the news this week.

The OVMA has a really good summary of the latest information and what to watch for. Please see the link below.

We have seen some cases here at Aloha Dog and Cat.
The cases we’ve seen have had an increased risk of pneumonia or prolonged (6-8 weeks) lingering cough, but thankfully no fatalities.

We have a new tool for chronic arthritis pain management in dogs called Librela. It is a once monthly injection that works by blocking one of the main pain signals to the brain. We’ve had it in the clinic for 1 week and are already seeing some amazing improvement. Please contact us for an exam and consultation if you think this could be part of the pain management plan for your dog (the cat version, Solensia, has been out for a year and has been life changing for many of our older cat patients).

Librela offers long-lasting pain relief with a once-monthly injection administered by your vet.

🎆 Get ready to play our favorite 4th of July game with your pet — it's called BOOM=Cookie! 💥 = 🍪 And it's as straightforward as it sounds.
Before fireworks begin in your area, put on your treat pouch (or make sure there are plenty of treat stations stocked around your home to grab from). Make sure you have lots of your pet's favorite high-value treats.
Whenever there is a boom or any sound that your dog notices, praise and immediately toss your dog (or cat!) a few treats. Boom = cookies!
Play this game all evening and into the night. The goal is to create an association that any loud noises – while startling or potentially scary – predict treats falling from the sky. This helps your pet cope with what can otherwise be very stressful.
If your dog or cat is not interested in the treats when they otherwise would be, that just means they are stressed and going into fight or flight mode. Comfort them as needed and help them settle into their safe place with the tv or radio on to help mask the fireworks sounds.
For more 4th of July tips, check out certified behavior expert Cathy Madson's article https://www.preventivevet.com/dogs/get-your-dog-ready-for-4th-of-july for more last-minute tips on getting out pets ready for the fireworks.

The Fourth of July is 1 month away. Now is the time to set up your pet’s environment and work on desensitization, before fireworks start going off. And if your pet needs anxiety medications to help get through the holidays, please call early, so that you can figure out a dose that works for them or if we need to try something new.

Reading Time: 4 minutes Share onDo you jump at unexpected loud noises? It’s adaptive for humans and other animals to startle at sudden loud sounds. We might run the other way or hide if we didn’t understand what a certain sound was. The same thing happens with many of our pets when they hear fir...

As Oregon expires its mask mandate, we are going mask optional but appreciated. If you have any illness or cough we still ask that you inform us and either reschedule or have a curbside appointment. Our staff is also mask optional but happy to wear a mask if requested in the exam room. After three years of restrictions we are happy to return to a new normal, while minimizing risk and exposure moving forward and showing respect and kindness for everyone’s choices.

** 12:55pm update—the highway has reopened**

Heads up if you’re coming to the clinic or just need to travel on TV Hwy—there was an accident and TV Hwy is closed between 170th and 185th. They are anticipating it to stay closed for at least 2-3 more hours (around lunchtime). The side street near Chevron is open so you can cut through there and get to the clinic. We will post again when the highway opens.
