Travelling with your dog this summer out of the country?

There is a new law starting August 1st, 2024 for ANY dog entering or returning to the US. This includes US dogs that leave for vacation and come back. Your dog can leave the US, but would NOT be allowed back in without proper documents. This includes a weekend trip to Canada and Mexico.

· You need a microchip with 15 digits.

· This microchip needs to be placed prior to or the same day as the most recent rabies vaccination. Rabies given before the microchip do not count.

· No puppies under 6 months allowed to travel or return to the US.

· Keep your rabies vaccine up to date! Even a day late means we need to wait 28 days.

· We are ONLY allowed to sign the form if the most recent rabies was given at our clinic. Note: we can booster rabies early if needed.

· This form is only for dogs coming into or returning to the US. Other countries have different requirements for dogs going elsewhere.

· You do not need a new exam prior to travel for Canada or Mexico, just a current rabies and have been seen within the past 12 months at our clinic. However, there will be a fee for the time to fill out this certificate.

· We are able to complete this form electronically and email it to you, but you must have a physical copy to cross the border.

· We have a more detailed handout if interested, just email us back and let us know.

· This is new to us as well and we are figuring it out together!

We can't speak bark or meow, but we can look out for signs that our pets may be trying to tell us they're experiencing dental pain. Here are signs to look out for:
1. Bad breath
2. Red or bleeding gums
3. Loose teeth
4. Excessive drooling
5. Decreased appetite

When was the last time you looked at your pet's teeth? Just like us humans, 2/3 of your pet's teeth are below the surface which can give us a false indication that their teeth are healthy when really something is brewing below the surface. This is why annual dental cleanings are so important for your pet's health. Give us a call to schedule your pet's dental appointment today!
