Emily is your first contact when calling TBVUC. Emily is local to Alpena for most of her life. Her family moved up from Detroit in the late 1980s and bought a fixer-upper hobby farm in Lachine. Emily soon found a passion for horses. It wasn't long before she and her family started breeding and showing Appaloosa horses all over the state of Michigan on a regional basis. She even dipped her toes into showing at the national level with her horse, at the time, Stat Carrie. Emily can be found manning the front desk and pitching in when needed in back during the weekends. Emily has hung up her reins, now has a family of her own (husband John, three boys Layne, Liam, and Jaxton) along with a little menagerie of pets. She absolutely loves her post at reception and truly wants the best for you and your pet.

This is a Pyometra that was removed from a middle-aged cat during our Urgent Care hours.
Pyometra is a serious life-threatening infection that causes the uterus to fill with bacteria and pus.
This happens in unaltered female dogs and cats.
If a Pyometra were to burst, the puss and bacteria would seep into the pets' abdomen and bloodstream. This would cause the animal to become septic and would ultimately pass away.
This is another reason to have your pet spayed.

A few weeks ago, The Foley Family with their new puppy, Flynn, were visiting friends Up North. They soon found themselves in a life or death emergency when Flynn suddenly became extremely ill. They called numerous Veterinary Clinics while on the road, but with it being the weekend, many clinics were closed, or only open for established clients. They finally came across Thunder Bay Veterinary Urgent Care. Our staff was able to get little Flynn quickly assessed, some fluids, stable and referred to a 24 hour facility a little closer to home.
Flynn's mom, Debra, who works in human medicine, shared with her boss the story of little Flynn's scary moment. She told him that if it wasn't for our quick assessments, teamwork, exceptional care, and kindness Flynn would not be here today. Flynn and his family were so thankful that they drove up to Alpena to personally donate an Ultrasound machine to our urgent care.

☀️ As temperatures rise, it's crucial to remember the dangers of leaving pets in parked vehicles. Even a few minutes can have devastating consequences. Here's why:

Cars heat up rapidly, even with the windows cracked open. On a warm day, the temperature inside a car can reach lethal levels within minutes, even if it doesn't feel scorching outside.

Leaving your pet unattended in a hot car is a grave risk. Signs of heat distress in animals include excessive panting, drooling, weakness, seizures, and ultimately, unconsciousness.

🐾🚫🍫 Let's talk about the dangers of chocolate for our furry friends. 🍫🚫🐾

Did you know that chocolate can be toxic to our beloved pets? While it may be a delicious treat for us, it can pose serious health risks to our four-legged companions. Here's why:

The culprit behind chocolate's danger is a substance called theobromine. Dogs and cats process theobromine much slower than humans, making them more susceptible to its toxic effects.

🐶🐱 Even small amounts of chocolate can cause a range of issues for our pets, including vomiting, diarrhea, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, muscle tremors, and even seizures. In severe cases, it can be life-threatening.

If you suspect that your pet has ingested chocolate, don't hesitate to contact us immediately.

Do you have a senior pet?

Here are a few common health issues that can arise and how to help prevent them and keep your furry friend around for years to come.

Aging can really creep up on pet owners, especially because the process can be incredibly subtle, unpredictable, and inconsistent. Some animals age quite well, or at least successfully hide symptoms, and their owners don’t fully realize that their best friend is slowing down.  Around age 7, senio...
