Norman has a few super powers...
๐ฃ built in megaphone
โ๏ธ he can use his Paws to open baby gates (who needs thumbs anyway!)
๐ฝ his nose can not only track wounded deer, critters and his sisters treats, but it also opens crates!
๐ bionic hearing that activates the built in megaphone
๐ค my personal favorite, he is an expert snuggler!
WHAT'S YOUR DOGS SUPER POWERS?
When you set out to build a dogs confidence and you create a "monster"...
My cheeks hurt from smiling.
My biggest mistake today.... not bringing the long line!
Who had more fun? Janice or Tucker??
HBDT will never charge extra to entertain and tire out hooman kids along with their canine companions ๐๐ฅฐ๐คฉ
This is Bowie! Clarey's brother!
Bowie has some pretty big feelings about grooming in general. He often gets rolled by his much more athletic sister. His bum needs to be wiped often.
This is just one week into our day training month together. I was over the moon that Bowie participated with Mom, and even once with me!!
Bravo Bowie and the whole family!!!!
Clarey the English Shepherd thinks that working on her recall is super fun. AND IT SHOULD BE!!!! Recall your dog, reinforce HEAVILY, then send them back out! Recall should not always equal fun is over!!

Using play, and putting rules around our games to help reinforce important skills!
Honor Bright Dog Training with Janice K Applegate
Steamy Saturday morning, but 6 teams got together to practice some skills. Being around people and other dogs can be a challenge for most of my clients. Over excitement, fear, frustration, whatever it may be. In a safe environment, creating stations, keeping everyone under threshold. Creating the opportunity to practice. Here they are putting the work in!
Every single one of them were super stars!!!
Someone remind me to pull out the fans next time!
23 seconds of nothing but a horse standing quietly on a trailer.
I just spent a week with Pat Miller, Anna, Stephanie and Cathy (sorry, wouldn't let me tag y'all!)
Why would working with 2 goats, 2 horses and a chicken have anything to do with continuing education?? We weren't training DOGS!
Learning and working with another animal using positive reinforcement has opened my eyes so much... I learned so much about myself, Body language, and positive reinforcement as a whole.
I am excited and recharged after a week (+) with my brilliant colleagues. Each of which I learned something new from, and of course mentor Pat Miller.
Peaceable Paws LLC will always be a home away from home.
(But super glad to be home with my dogs and horses!)
Hi friends! I apologize for being absent on the page! I promise... good stuff to come! Everyone needs a social media break to regroup at times!
I haven't seen Leila in quite a while. Truth is, "my" dogs love seeing me. We took some time to make sure Leila was focused on her Mom, and could greet me without loosing her concentration.
I then brought Ditto out (who was super excited to see Leila, Eileen and Joe!).
Seeing this team come along from reactive to appropriate is what fuels this buisness. Success. Step by step.
Leila has come a long way. So has her mom. Together they have been building THIS relationship.
I couldn't be more proud!!!.
** SIDE NOTE**! There is some pretty cool body language in this video! Who wants to pick things apart? What do you see? From Leila? From Ditto? When? Let's hear it!
(Where could I have been wrong! ๐)
Loose leash walking with Belle...
Most of my clients are not interested in a competition "heal". To be honest, neither am I!
I am a firm believer that walks are for the dogs, to sniff and explore and do DOG THINGS. There is a time and a place for everything. Including sniffing and staying close to the handler.
Belle and I are using a 15 foot long line for walks. Sure, handling a long line takes some getting used to, but doesn't everything??
We stopped to collect some garbage along our walk, so I had my hands full!!
Belle did an awesome job of walking, and returning to my side when I asked her to "stay with me".
Our end goal? To be able to walk through Frenchtown, politely! This is just our third hour of day training together, and it's already starting to click!
Watch out Frenchtown! You'll be seeing Belle and I soon enough!
Sharing with permission of guardian!
๐คฌ Nessa has been labeled a bad dog by her neighbors.
๐ฅฐ she is a good girl and quite loved by her humans.
๐จ here's the thing. Her guardians are so concerned about her reactivity that she doesn't get much exercise. Because walks are impossible and SUPER stressful when your dog is reactive to literally EVERYTHING.
๐ค how can a dog guardian see their dogs lameness when they are hyper focused on getting from point A to point B? They aren't often watching their dog from behind...
๐ค if something changes little by little, we aren't as likely to notice.
๐ฅฐ So if your dog has challenges... be sure to speak to a trainer who will look at their BIG picture. Just imagine how YOU feel when your back is out, or when you have the flu.... or you have a migraine...
๐ถ while we ABSOLUTELY need to work on some of Nessa's behavior challenges, FIRST we need to make sure she FEELS good to do so. By feeling good, we can help her drop that "covid 20". By feeling good, we can help her change those associations more quickly.
๐คจ I honestly don't want to think about what would have happened to Nessa if her guardians had gone with a "balanced" or compulsion based trainer.
๐ค what do you see here that Nessa might not be able to tell us?
We hear you Nessa... loud and clear, and we got you. Honor Bright.
HONOR BRIGHT DOG TRAINING TAKES OVER HONOR BRIGHT FARM!!
Perhaps the most boring 53 seconds you could watch.
๐ถ 6 teams of dogs and their humans. Just hanging out.
๐คฏ 5 of the 6 dogs are reactive. The 6th has trouble focusing.
๐ฅณ all 6 dogs and humans were absolutely phenomenal.
๐ด I am sure that the pups are just as exhausted as I am....
Shoot me a message and join the team!!!
I want to share a video.
Malli strugles with reactivity? Over excitement? Whatever you want to label it we will work through it.
There are videos circulating of working around a dogs hesitation with other dogs. The dog gets a "correction" when it looks at the other dog.
I will not argue about methods, or what other people use to "control" their dogs.
HOWEVER
When there is an emotion involved, especially fear, the use of aversives have no place.
Punishment only shuts a fearful dog down further. Think about it. If you are afraid of a spider, snake, heights... whatever... if someone corrected you via electric shock, would that make you feel better about your fear, or worse??
There is no place for punishment in behavior modification, especially when it involves an emotional response.
Yes, this poodle is reactive to other dogs and cars.
Yes. This is our third session.
Yes! I want my dogs to have loose and happy body language AT ALL TIMES.
Let's help reactive and fearful dogs change that emotional response from an angry fearful one, to a happy or no big deal one.
Using a punishment here just does not make sense. Not for humans. Not for dogs.
Look at my little buddy GOOOOO!!!!!!!!
A little patience, help and encouragement. He most definitely exceeded my expectations.
So..... baby steps to help build confidence!!
๐ถ we started at the bottom step!! We got super good at just one step before I even suggested 2.
๐ we celebrated every time (my neighbors think I'm nuts)
๐ค when we started on 2 steps I had to help him. I'd support him and get him started. We stuck with just 2 steps for a few days.
๐ถ yesterday he mastered 3 steps no problem!
๐ฅณ this morning he did 4 steps!!!!
I can imagine what this little guy feels like staring down my deck steps. There's 15 steps!!!! We will see if he tackles them before he gets adopted ๐ฅฐ๐ฅฐ
** Excuse my puppy voice.
Yes, we are crazy. I have 3 pups and their mom as well as the normal "crew".
๐จโ๐ฉโ๐ฆโ๐ฆ this little guy's sister and brother mastered the deck steps in a few days.
๐ถ this adorable little brown pup would like to remind everyone that it's ok to be who you are.
๐ค we all learn differently
๐ฅฐ we all learn at our own pace
๐ฅณ it's okay, and EASIER when you break things down into smaller steps.
WHO WANTS TO SEE WHERE WE ARE IN THE PROCESS?? Let me know!
I AM SO PROUD!!!
Leila's mom is visually impaired. She rescued Leila off of a Facebook post while in Virginia with hopes of being able to train Leila to be her service dog.
One REALLY BIG problem. Leila is EXTREMELY excitable around dogs.
They have put an awful lot of work in.... and Leila while not there yet, is doing SOOOOO much better!
Have I, as their coach helped? Sure. I helped formulate plans, gave them ideas. We meet so I can work with Leila on things that are more difficult for her mom. But Eileen and her family are the ones to celebrate.
I am so impressed with the dedication of this team.
