Cole Fyr Farms

Cole Fyr Farms ADGA registered Purebred and American Nubian goats One day we may venture into cheese production as well.
(6)

We are a fledgling dairy goat farm with a herd of friendly, CAE/CL/Johnes/Brucellosis and G6S tested Nubian goats. In addition to our American herd, we have two Purebred Nubian bucks and in 2014 welcomed a Purebred Lynnhaven doeling to the herd as well! The plan: to offer goat milk soaps, as well as other quality goat milk products, as time (ie.: our day jobs) will allow.

Cornell virology experts are sequencing the bird flu virus that struck cows in the Texas panhandle last week, after work at Cornell and two other veterinary diagnostic laboratories found the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus in cattle samples, a first for this species.

Madigan Squeeze Technique

Full disclosure, I hadn’t heard of this technique until fellow breeder, Julie Matthys, made a comment about it a year or two ago in a group I admin. I actually had a tab opened in my phone since she mentioned it… yes from way back then! Little did I know, this would be a true lifesaver.

This kid was born big, full term, nose and toes normal delivery but was off. I couldn’t get him to drink and he had zero suck reflex even with extra doses of vitamin E. We resorted to tubing him colostrum but he was weak and couldn’t stand. I then remembered a bit about the Madigan Squeeze, found some links, YouTube videos, and TikToks. At this point we had nothing to lose and decided to try it. I won’t say we are experts or that we even did it perfectly (maybe use thicker rope??) but the result is a kid who started to get a suck reflex almost right away, to drinking well from a bottle, is now on the lambar, and stands and walks around. 🤯

Moral of the story: Always, always be open to learning new things and listen to trusted breeders. Big thanks to Julie for sharing her wisdom and knowledge… this has been fascinating to learn and we’re grateful for a positive outcome.

Sometimes a change of scenery is in order. We never thought he would leave here, but Thunder (Cole Fyr LME Dark Knight) was getting a bit stir-crazy not having does to breed, so today he headed east. Thanks to Sprout Creek Farm for giving our boy a great new place to work! I'll miss my buddy, but I'm excited for him ❤

I know it's been pretty quiet on here, but we've been focusing on taking care of our human residents. In that vein, we've taken a year off from breeding. Kidding is such a stressful time & we're practicing some self-care.
Our kids are definitely an important part of self-care, though, so I spent some time hanging out in the pasture with the girls yesterday. I just sit amongst them & they wander over individually, or in small family groups, to get some snuggles from mom, then continue on with their grazing. ❤

10 years ago, these lovely ladies started the addiction. 8 years ago we had a very traumatic first kidding season where we almost lost Miss Jazz (on the left), did lose Miss Mule's doeling and had to tube feed Mule's extremely weak buckling for a week. Jazz earned permanent retirement when she decided to live after a week of intense, round-the-clock care, and a few years later both of these ladies moved to 'retirement village' at my Mom's to be doted on and spoiled. Today we laid Miss Jazz to rest at the tender age of 15. Sweet, gentle and unbelievably loving, she was also ever in charge. Her's is a presence that will definitely be missed.

It has finally begun! We have updated the website with our current list of available goats (more to be added as I get it sorted out). We're hoping the bucklings find working homes rather soon, but we would love for all of them to find great new places to work in the near future! www.colefyrfarms.com/sale

Yearling buck, Dexter, demonstrating why welded wire is wasted time & money for containing goats. We are transitioning acres worth of welded wire to this sheep & goat woven wire fencing, because a goat's favorite activity is rubbing against EVERYTHING, and they make short work of chintzy welds. Even using a fence stretcher, this fence shows bends, but doesn't break down.
