VELCRO DOGS
Dogs that follow us everywhere and always want to be with us.

When I say, "I'M JUST GOING TO THE BATHROOM." My dogs hear: “FAMILY MEETING, ASSEMBLE NOW!" – I’m not sure where this saying originates from, but it’s so true.

Should we be concerned because by allowing dogs to do this, we might be encouraging separation distress (signs of stress and / or panic either when a dog thinks we are about to leave or what they do after we leave?
Are we encouraging neediness, clinginess, or demanding behavior, or is this behavior a normal, natural need of a social being that is actually a compliment as to the way our dogs feel about us?

It can be a fine line, and it’s always a good idea to encourage some independence and alone time to build self-confidence and resilience, especially in puppies, younger dogs, or rescues.

It’s also a subject that, like so many others, depends on the individual dog, history, and circumstances.

This post is about recognising and accepting that the need to be with us and follow us around is a very normal and natural behavior.

It’s a compliment that says “I feel safe with you, you are so important to me, I feel connected to you, I trust you, have a bond with you, being with you makes me happy!”

That’s not to say that dogs that don’t follow us around don’t feel that way about us!

Each dog is an individual with different social preferences.

Some dogs are loners, more independent, and enjoy spending time alone.

Older dogs and seniors who are secure and confident in their environment may just not feel the need to be with us all the time.

If you have a Velcro dog that isn’t stressed or panicked when you leave home, accept the compliment. You’ve clearly earned it!

Here’s a glimpse of what you need to know:

Plastic🥣: Chemicals in plastic absorb through the skin and inhibit the synthesis of melanin, which can cause Plastic Dish Nasal Dermatitis that leaves your pet’s nose & lips, pink and irritated

Ceramic:🫖 Hartpury scientists found the most harmful bacterial species (salmonella, E.coli, and MRSA) were most frequently found in ceramic bowls because of people continuing to use them after fine cracks in the glaze become visible.

Stainless steel🥄: cheaper quality bowls have been involved in recalls due to heavy metal contamination. Be sure to buy high-quality bowls (18/8 or 304 steel) from a trusted source.

Glass🥛: Durable, kitchen-friendly glass bowls made from 100% borosilicate glass (Pyrex) make great food and water bowls on the floor.

🧼No matter which type of bowl you use, the best thing you can do to protect you and your dog’s health is to wash your bowl after every meal with hot water and soap. In addition, at least once a week, run your bowls through the hot cycle in your dishwasher. You can also coat the bowl with hydrogen peroxide, wait five minutes, then wipe with a damp clean rag.

💙🐾 We want to take a moment to apologize to our wonderful customers for not having our full menu the past few weeks. Our sweet Ranger has been very sick, which has meant lots of vet visits and even a recent trip to the University of Illinois in Champaign. We have another follow-up scheduled in October as we continue to focus on his care.

Thank you all so much for your patience, kindness, and support during this time — it truly means the world to us. 💕

We will be at the Effingham Farmers Market this Saturday, September 20th, but please note that we will once again have a limited menu available.

From our family (and Ranger 🐶) to yours, thank you for understanding and for being part of our Barkery family. 💜

Did you know that the tiny vertical groove between a dog’s nose and upper lip actually has a purpose? It’s called the vegetal groove (or philtrum), and it’s not there by accident!

Each time a dog licks its lips, a bit of saliva collects in that groove. Through a process called capillarization, the moisture travels up to the nose — helping keep it damp.

And why does that matter? Because a moist nose is much better at capturing and holding scents from the air. 🌬️✨ That’s part of what makes a dog’s sense of smell so incredibly powerful!

Nature’s design is always so clever, isn’t it? 🐕💛

Could This Berry Be the Key to Your Pet’s Stronger Health? 🫐💪

Elderberries can do wonders for your pet’s health 🙌, but only when prepared the right way. Unlike most berries that are safe to consume raw, elderberries must be properly processed into supplement form before your pet can safely enjoy their benefits. ✅

There are many elderberry-centric supplements available for pets, but be sure to choose trusted brands and consult an integrative veterinarian before giving them to your pet. 🐱🐶

WHAT YOU USE TO CLEAN🧽 YOUR HOME ENDS UP INSIDE YOUR PET.🐶🐱

A groundbreaking study found that dogs and cats were contaminated with 48 out of 70 tested industrial chemicals — and 43 of those were at higher levels than in humans. We're talking chemicals from cleaning products, air fresheners, flame retardants, lawn treatments, and more—many linked to cancer, hormone disruption, and DNA damage.

🐾 Our pets can’t escape the air they breathe or the floors they walk on. But we can reduce what they're exposed to.

💡 Here’s what you can do:
✅ Switch to non-toxic cleaners (see recipe below!)
✅ Avoid synthetic air fresheners & products that list "fragrance" on the label
✅ Look for pet products free from fire retardants & stain-proofing chemicals
✅ Clean with your pet in mind—because they’re breathing it all in

✨ Try our pet-safe, DIY cleaner:
3 drops castile soap
1 cup filtered water
½ cup rubbing alcohol (70%)
(Optional: 2–3 drops lemon or bergamot essential oil)

Mix in a glass spray bottle and clean on with peace of mind.

DON’T TOUCH MY STUFF!
Resource guarding – also called possessive aggression

We all guard our resources. It’s a natural reaction to a threat of something we value being taken away.

It’s essential for survival, and dogs or other animals would not survive in the wild if they didn’t guard their resources.

We also don’t get to decide what’s valuable and what’s not – different things have different values to different dogs and at different times.

Food is usually the most common, but toys, furniture, different items, places, or even a certain person are all things that may be seen as a valuable resource.

A dog turning their head away, freezing, a hard stare, whale eye, moving away, growling, or snapping may quickly escalate into a serious bite in an attempt to protect that valuable possession.

Punishing or forcing a dog to give something up is probably one of the worst things to do.

Resource guarding is rooted in the emotion of fear – the fear of that resource being taken away.

Punishment and force further increase that fear, which only increases and reinforces the need to protect that resource.

When a dog is guarding food or an object, we can change the negative emotion of that fear into a positive one by swopping or trading something that has a similar or higher value than what the dog has.

This is one of the most effective ways to address resource guarding of objects as it works at the root cause of the behavior by changing the emotional response.

A dog resource guarding a person is more complicated to address. A full history of the individual dog, family dynamics, attachment styles, situation, and environment all have to be assessed before planning and working on a solution.

Resource guarding can usually be prevented, managed and addressed and by starting early, understanding why dogs feel the need to resort to this behavior and doing what we can to prevent it from happening in the first place.

Want to supercharge your dog’s bowl?🥕🐾

Root vegetables aren’t just great for humans, they’re packed with powerful benefits for your pup’s long-term health, immunity, and gut.

✨ Here’s why root veggies matter: Feeding your pet root vegetables is a great way to give them the beneficial microbes they need for a healthy gut. Since soil and gut microbiomes are nearly identical, microbes on these veggies help restore gut diversity, often lost due to poor diet, medications, and pollution. Even after washing, these microbes remain, supporting a rich, balanced microbiome for your pet.

🌱 Organic root veggies carry living microbes from healthy soil (even after washing), which can help rebuild your pet’s gut ecosystem and support digestion, immunity, and overall wellness.

🧄 Turnips: Contain sulforaphane, a natural compound that activates genes to reduce inflammation, detox the body, and may help slow cancer and heart disease.

🥕 Parsnips: Rich in prebiotic fiber, vitamin C, and polyacetylenes - plant compounds with anticancer properties.

🌻 Jerusalem Artichokes (aka Sunchokes: One of the top foods to support your dog’s gut microbiome, loaded with prebiotics and soil-based microbes. Microbiome expert Tim Spector even calls them his #1 pick for canine gut health.

🥕 Carrots: These colorful roots help reduce oxidative stress caused by acrolein (a pollutant from car exhaust and smoke). They're also high in phenolic compounds with liver-supportive, antimicrobial effects.

🍠 Sweet Potatoes: Packed with beta-carotene, prebiotic fiber, and anthocyanins. These antioxidants help support aging immune systems, fight inflammation, and may protect against cancer and cognitive decline.
