GIFT OF THE GROWL

Not all growling is a sign that a dog’s unhappy. Some growls may be part of a particular play style, seeking attention, frustration, excitement, or other reasons. They may all sound a little different and may be unique to that particular dog.

This post is not about different types of growls but about reactive, aggressive, or early warning growls.

When a dog growls, especially when it’s directed at us, our natural human response is to feel offended and maybe even angry.

Surely dogs need to learn not to growl, growling is bad, it’s not acceptable, it’s a problem that needs to be stopped or punished so a dog learns that it’s wrong, disrespectful and unacceptable, right?

This couldn’t be further from the truth! A dog that growls has just provided us with very valuable information.

In their way, they have just told us how they feel about a situation without escalating to a bite.

Dogs use growling in an attempt to avoid having to resort to biting, not to initiate it. They could just as easily not have even bothered to growl and gone straight to a bite.

A dog that growls is trying to communicate how they feel. Ignoring or punishment only suppresses this communication. Punishment increases fear, anxiety, and stress.

A dog that bites without the warning of a growl is a far more serious problem than a dog that growls but doesn’t bite.

Look for any other early warning signals that may precede a growl. Learn to recognise body language and specific situations that trigger it.

Be grateful for the gift of a growl – this is a non-violent early warning signal that we need to acknowledge, understand, and respect.

It's a gift of clear communication that allows us to intervene, advocate, and prevent escalation to a bite.

Bloat is a sudden condition in dogs where the stomach expands due to trapped gas, air and fluid. If you don’t catch it early, bloat can progress to a life-threatening disorder called gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV).

In GDV, the bloated stomach twists around itself, cutting off blood supply to the stomach and spleen and potentially causing significant damage to other internal organs. This is a life-threatening emergency, and without treatment, it can lead to death within hours. 🚨

GDV is often seen in older dogs, large and giant breeds, and deep-chested dogs and may have a genetic component. However, bloat can affect any dog. 💔

Why Socializing Matters for Shelter Dogs 🐶🐶

Many shelters keep dogs alone to prevent disease and avoid fights, but since dogs are social animals, this isolation can hurt their well-being and make them harder to adopt. 👎 This new research brings hope for homeless pets and shelter staff facing limited space and long adoption wait times. ❤️

🚨The Risks of Chemical Flea and Tick Products🚨

Year-round chemical flea and tick preventives are often recommended, even when your pet isn’t infested. 👎 But these treatments carry serious risks you should be aware of. Spot-on applications can cause skin irritation, paralysis, seizures, and even death. ⚠️ Some products containing fipronil, a common ingredient, have even been linked to cancer.

Starting a natural parasite prevention strategy early in the season is the best way to minimize chemical use and protect your pet’s health. 🛡️🐕🐈

FACING THE FEAR
There is a common disbelief that comforting a dog that is feeling scared, anxious, or stressed will only reinforce, encourage the feeling, and make it worse.

This belief is incorrect. Fear is an emotional response and one that a dog does not choose or decide to feel.

An emotion is an involuntary, uncontrolled response that can not be reinforced.

Punishing fear-based behavior is even worse than not providing comfort as it creates even more negative associations with whatever the “scary thing" is.

Behavior and emotions are intrinsically linked in important ways, but they are still not the same thing and require different approaches when they become a problem.

Imagine an intruder broke into your home, tied you up, and took off with your belongings. After being freed and getting help, a friend arrives to see how you are.

Your friend tells you that she can see that you’re really anxious and scared but she’s just going to completely ignore you, is not going to attempt to comfort you, sit with you or support you because by doing so she will make you even more afraid and upset. Does that reaction make any sense?

Why should it be any different for dogs that also experience a range of emotions? Why then is it still believed that we should ignore our dogs?

Probably because there is confusion and misunderstanding about the difference between an emotional response - which is an involuntary response and a learned response - which has varying degrees of conscious control.

If we acknowledge that providing comfort and support to a dog that is experiencing these emotions will not reinforce them, do we know if providing comfort will reduce these emotions?

Research on this subject shows evidence that providing comfort and support in stressful situations decreases a dog’s heart rate and salivary cortisol levels, reduces stress responses, and increases calm behavior.

Ignoring a dog’s emotions because of misinformed advice in the belief that this will change the behavior is more damaging than helpful.

We need to accept and acknowledge that our dogs are having an emotional response and not a behavioral problem.

We need to show compassion and understanding, be a secure base, a safe haven, and provide the appropriate comfort when our dogs need it.

Pumpkin seeds are the superstars of natural deworming, & make it so you'll never have to use a toxic med again.

I use Gerbs, raw, unsalted, in the shell, pumpkin seeds: https://amzn.to/3ICdu0t

Coffee bean grinder: https://amzn.to/49QlAPd
This grinder is inexpensive & mine has held up without a single issue for years!

Pumpkin seeds contain an amino acid called cucurbitacin, which has natural deworming properties for dogs. When dogs ingest pumpkin seeds, cucurbitacin paralyzes & eliminates certain types of intestinal parasites, such as tapeworms & roundworms, helping to expel them from the dog's digestive tract.

Overall the research suggests that pumpkin seeds can be used to kill the following parasites as well:
Ascaridia galli {roundworms found in poultry}
Ascaris suum {roundworms found in pigs}
Fasciola gigantica {flatworm, specifically liver flukes}
Hymenolepsis nana {dwarf tapeworm}
Schistosoma mansoni {flatworms, specifically a blood fluke}
Taenia {tapeworms}
Trychostrongylus {hairworms & threadworms}

There’s more to pumpkin seeds than just being a dewormer. They also have lots of other beneficial properties beyond deworming, so they are a good addition to your dog's diet.

Pumpkin seeds can help your dog to:
Reduce inflammation
Lower risk of developing cancer
Prevent arthritis
Reduce oxidative damage

-----

How To Feed
When feeding, use the raw seeds, not salted or cooked. Make sure you are grinding/feeding the whole pumpkin seed. If you can, choose organic.

-----

Side note on the shells & why we feed them:
Pumpkin seed shells, also known as hulls or husks, contain several nutrients. Some of the nutrients found in pumpkin seed shells include:

Fiber: Pumpkin seed shells are rich in dietary fiber, which is beneficial for digestive health & helps to regulate bowel movements.

Protein: Pumpkin seed shells contain some protein, although the amount may be lower compared to the seeds themselves. Protein is essential for muscle repair & growth.

Minerals: Pumpkin seed shells contain minerals such as magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, & zinc, & you already learned how important these are in our dogs diet.

Antioxidants: Like pumpkin seeds, the shells also contain antioxidants such as carotenoids & vitamin E, which help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.

-----

Pumpkin seeds are mostly fat, so it’s important to store them away from heat. You can put them in your pantry if it’s cool. Otherwise, store them in your fridge.

As a general guideline, you can start by adding about 1 teaspoon of ground pumpkin seeds per 10 pounds of body weight to your dog's food.

For example:
- For a small dog weighing around 10 pounds, start with about 1/2 teaspoon of ground pumpkin seeds, work up to 1 tsp.
- For a medium-sized dog weighing around 30 pounds, start with about 1 & 1/2 teaspoons & work up to 3 (=1 tablespoon) of ground pumpkin seeds.
- For a large dog weighing 60+ pounds, start with about 3 teaspoons & work up to 6 (2 tablespoons) of ground pumpkin seeds.

I suggest splitting the amounts over the 2 meals you feed a day.

-----

Important to note 📣
I promise you I don't recommend a certain type without reason. You need raw, unsalted, pumpkin seeds WITH THE SHELL. Pumpkin seeds without the shell are pepetias & they do NOT work for deworming.

Pumpkin seeds, including the shell, contain a compound called cucurbitacin, which is what is needed for its deworming properties to work in dogs. It's the fiber of the shell that helps to naturally expel parasites from the digestive tract.

Does cleaning your floor make your air dirty? A recent study says yes.😱

Mopping your floor with industrial-grade limonene-containing cleaners🪣 (keep reading for our pet-safe DIY cleaner recipe) for just a few minutes can create as much air pollution as traffic 🚙 on a busy city street, according to researchers. The aerosols generated by mopping with commercial-grade lemon🍋- or pine🌲-scented chemicals can be inhaled deep into the lungs 🫁 (by both humans and animals), causing irritation and leading to health issues 😷 like allergies, and more.

So can you have a clean floor AND clean air? Also, yes! 🥳 Researchers found that the use of an air purifier during mopping can significantly reduce the concentration 📉 of harmful aerosols.

🧽 You can also try a pet-safe floor cleaner:
1 gallon water
2 cups white vinegar
1-2 cups rubbing alcohol
1 tsp natural dish soap
Optional: 5-10 drops of bergamot, lemon, or other pet safe essential oil

🪣 Combine in a bucket to mop. Can be added to a spray bottle for spot cleaning. There is no need to rinse.

🐾 Understanding Vitamin D for Your Dog's Health 🐶

Though vitamin D deficiency is uncommon in dogs, maintaining sufficient levels is crucial for their overall well-being. Research indicates that inadequate vitamin D levels can contribute to various health issues in dogs, including autoimmune disorders, heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and an increased risk of certain c*ncers like lymphoma, carcinoma, hemangiosarcoma, splenic tumors, and mast cell tumors.

To ensure your beloveds receive enough vitamin D, consider incorporating whole food sources into their diet. Foods rich in vitamin D include wild oysters, fatty fish such as wild salmon, sardines, and mackerel, shiitake mushrooms exposed to UV light, and small amounts in pastured eggs and liver.
