Introducing the Mountain litter

I decided to stray away from the Disney theme this litter. They’re here and they’re wonderful.

A HUGE thank you to Laura for letting me use Ollie as a stud. He’s a very versatile and eager boy. I am honored to have used such a lovely boy.

There is room on our waitlist. If you have interest please fill out a questionnaire at eandcaussies.com/questionnaire.

Only going to take a few more for the contact list for Stella and Ollie. She’s due for her heat any time now and we’re hoping for a beautiful litter using Ollie (owned and loved by Laura Whittemore). He’s a gorgeous and versatile boy.

I am holding back from this litter, and I will not make my decision until they’re 7-8 weeks old so if you want on the wait list, you will have to be patient. The wait list has started. Dep osits will not be collected until the litter is on the ground.

We will not have another litter til 2025 and likely not for at least a year after that as well. All colors expected. Ollie does have one copy of MDR1. Otherwise both parents are full panel clear with OFAs completed.

If you’re interested, go to eandcaussies.com/questionnaire and fill out the form.

‼️

Let's talk about this photo. It's cute, except it's not. I see a dog who cannot get up without telling the child to get off. How do you think a dog is going to do that?

The 7 Golden Toddler Dog Rules:
#1: If a dog walks away from you, you DO NOT FOLLOW.
#2: Always leave room for the dog to walk away from you.
---that right there is 90+% of dog bites eliminated---
#3: We do not climb on the dog.
#4: We do not grab or pull on the dog.
#5: We do not hit or throw anything at the dog.
#6: We do not touch the dog's food.
#7: We do not go into the dog's kennel.

I promise these are not overly difficult concepts for littles, nor will they rob a kid of their bond with the family dog. It will deepen that bond, while keeping everyone safe.

"Oh, it looks like Moose is walking away from you. She is saying she wants a break. Let's play with this instead!"

"It's Moose's dinner time! Let's give her space to enjoy her yummies."

"That is Moose's room(kennel) and only she is allowed to go in there."

"If Moose wanted a break, could she walk away from you right now? No she really couldn't. Let's move away from the play house. You can keep playing but now she can leave when she wants a break."

In conclusion, ***parent your child or your dog will do it for you, and you will not like how they do it.***

I highly recommend NOT feeding dogs a grain-free diet unless specifically necessary and told so by a veterinarian. Very few dogs *need* a grain free diet and these diets can cause more harm than good.

Cascade went back to the person I bought her from tonight…
I’m angry. I’m disappointed. And I’m sad.

I was not going to give her back, I was going to keep her and fight for her. I spoke with my mentor, who said if it were here she’d give her back and wash her hands of the entire situation and people from which she came. I also spoke to a police officer who said if I called the police, they’d likely tell me the same thing my mentor did.

I requested that they keep me up to date on her health. Whether they do or not, is a different story and will say a lot about their character. Shes on track to good health and I hope they keep her going that way.

I hate that this is the turn out of this situation. And because I’m angry I’m going to end this post.

I purchased a dog to add to my program a few weeks back. I was told that she had resorbed a litter and that she was kind of thin after that and blowing coat. It was “thought” that the stud could have been the problem. Also told that she does a leg shake thing when standing. Her mentor recommended seeing a chiropractor.
About a week prior to pick up, I was informed that she may have allergies, as she’s itchy. They switched her food and they think the hay in the yard could be contributing.
The night before pick up I was informed of a hot spot, and ear infection.
At pick up I was told she actually had two hot spots that they missed the second one, and that she’s a bit dramatic for her ear meds.

Upon arriving at the hotel I was spending the night in, the dog was chewing a third spot on her leg, found to have scabs covering a lot of her body. She was itchy everywhere, she full body twitched every few seconds continuously when laying down (not sleeping). When I put ear rinse in her ears she not only screamed, but she cowered, shook, foamed at the mouth, dug in her ears, and ran from me. That isn’t drama. That is pain. Her ears were extremely waxy, swollen, and raw.

I requested half of my money back and to keep and spay the dog to get her healthy. I was denied. So before I even made it back home I stopped at an urgent care vet for 9.5 hours and $630. Her bloodwork was thankfully mostly normal. She has bacteria and yeast in her ears to which they put slow releasing BNT in her ears as I could not put drops in her ears daily. She was also diagnosed with a full body yeast infection, told to keep on the meds from the sellers vet, and also to be given weekly antifungal baths.
They said the twitching was from pain and likely the itchiness as well. They prescribed gabapentin.

This dog was handed over to me knowing I was adding her to a breeding program. She has been thin and lacking coat for at least 2 months.
I have contacted a previous owner and the breeder of the dog who both said she never had allergies, never had coat issues, and was not a picky eater.

The seller told me she’d come pick her up and refund my money. But I cannot in good conscience let this dog go back and continue to suffer. I have denied her request to take the dog back. I am going to contact a lawyer.

I’m out time, money, and a dog that should have been an asset to my program because the whole truth wasn’t told to me. I’m angry with the state this dog came to me in. I’ve had her for a week. She has a ways to go, but she is getting where she needs to be. I feel foolish for trusting this person, but at least the dog will get healthy. I know I will do right by the dog.

I have videos and pictures of this poor dog, and the way she looks/feels. Some are quite graphic. This should NEVER have been an issue. A simple “she’s not healthy, and shouldn’t be bred” is all that should have been said to me and I’d have thanked them and wished them well.

I’m heartbroken for this dog.

Prospective puppy buyers are always told to choose a “good” or “reputable” breeder. But what does this really mean? Today’s is breaking down what it means to be a “good” breeder and why it can be so hard to tell the difference between someone you can trust and someone whose priorities are off.

Things to keep in mind when evaluating a breeding program:

-Titles don’t tell the whole story! Just because a dog has earned a championship doesn’t automatically mean their temperament is stable.

-Look for a breeder who will be honest with you about their dogs’ good traits AND bad.

-Health testing, beyond an Embark test, is a must.

Your breeder should be a source of support and help as you navigate the process of raising your puppy, so it’s important to go with a breeder you can trust!

As the weather warms up you might be tempted to shave or clip down your Australian Shepherd to keep them cool.

STEP AWAY FROM THE CLIPPERS!

Science has proven that double coated (guard or top coat and undercoat which is fluffy and soft) breeds should not be clipped down but should instead be kept throughly brushed to remove the dead undercoat. The undercoat is vital in keeping your Australian Shepherd warm in the winter AND cool in the summer. If you shave them, they’re unable to regulate their heat naturally which makes them more susceptible to heat stroke and sunburn to the skin.

Instead, grab a regular metal comb and “line comb” the dog to remove dead undercoat. Go slowly.. line by line down to the skin. This will help your dog keep itself cooler and reduce shedding in your home!

Please “like” and “follow” us for more tips!

MANAGING MULTIPLES
Having multiple dogs is challenging and time consuming.

This picture is of my 4 Schnauzers sleeping contentedly and peacefully together, albeit having their separate beds and space.

Pictures can be deceiving though, and this is certainly not always how it is.

Dogs don’t get to choose their housemates. We expect them to just get along with any other dog we choose to add to our home and are frustrated and stressed when this sometimes isn’t the case.

Just like people sharing a home, dogs certainly don’t always get along – at some time, there will be conflict and sometimes this can become a serious problem.

Different personalities, different needs, energy levels, ages, conflicts over resources, spaces, people, entrances, exits, health issues etc. are just some of the things that can lead to issues.

The importance of learning, recognizing and taking note of body language is so important, especially when caring for multiple dogs.

When we ignore the “whispers” of body language or simply don’t understand or notice, the whispers may soon become shouts or screams and we have missed an opportunity to manage and diffuse a situation.

Over time, sometimes just seeing the other dog becomes the trigger where initially it was only the specific circumstance or situation.

Prevention is always better than trying to “fix” a problem.

Being proactive instead of reactive is so important in managing multiple dogs.

We do not remove front dew claws. Our dogs use them.❤️

Big thank you to Good Breeder Center for this educational article. We have been leaving our dogs with all their digits for years now, and feel they are much healthier and happier.

“Although dewclaws do not touch the ground when dogs are standing, when dogs are running or jumping, the dewclaws stabilize the wrist joint and can provide traction. Some dogs even use their dewclaws for playing, gripping, and climbing. Read more about dewclaws here: https://www.gooddog.com/health-hub/all-about-dewclaws
