It’s time to get open mares under lights

It may seem like there are a lot of days between now and the beginning of breeding season, BUT we are just FIVE weeks from the beginning of foaling season AND we are under 80 days until the breeding sheds open. Please check out this infographic Gabi Sutton Vermeulen made during a past equine reproduction lab on lighting. Mares often don't cycle until April or May naturally. So if you have open mares that you plan to breed early, you will need 60-90 days of artificially lighting BEFORE breeding. Its TIME to get started!! Whether you bring your mare in a stall with lights on a timer or invest in a light mask, you will be more successful this breeding season if you start planning now!!

“I love the Iowa people. There's a lot of entrepreneurs there, like the Albaugh family who everyone knows in racing. People don't realize, but Iowa per capita is one of the richest states in the nation. But they're just friendly, Midwest people, and that's what I am. I mean, I get on an elevator, I speak to everyone. At the racetrack, I'll talk to housekeeping, the people picking up trash. I'm no better than anyone else. I'm just one of them. And they're easy to love because they're just the same way.”

The previous time that he had neared rock bottom, it turned out that Allen Poindexter still had a ways to fall. Fell pretty hard, all the same: kept drinking all the way down from Missouri, in fact he bought a bottle of Dom Perignon after reaching Florida and drank it on a park bench outside

With a heavy heart, I share the news that longtime Board Member Ed Holland has passed away. Ed and his wife Gloria have bred and/or raced Iowa breds for the past 32 years. He has been a director on the ITBOA board since 1998, retiring last December. He has also served on the Iowa HBPA board. Ed loved mornings on the backside and his time watching the races. His last horse, Luckyhotstuff won 2 races this summer at Prairie Meadows. Ed will be deeply missed by so many. I will pass on Funeral Arrangements when they are finalized.
